For all those who are confused about the fact that MJ songs are still being released despite his death in 2009. These were recorded years ago, if not decades. But they’re just being released due to the fact that he didn’t want to include them in an album he was working on, or because he simply didn’t like them.. This one was recorded in 1981 by the way .. Hope this helped..

This song was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away the other day, and was a hit song during the YMO era. Eric Clapton later put it on his own album and it became a big hit. This is a remix version recorded on the album released after Michael Jackson passed away. In memory of Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ryuichi Sakamoto. I have the YMO vers on my PC. and 3 other vers. - only saw 🧤 MJs 🧤 2 mos ago, actually. My new ringtone (for CoVid) is actually Greg's version, MJ's KB player, with MJ adding words into the orig YMO version, it has heavy bass and a lot of Vocoder. I decided this song is the most appropriate for the current state of the world. At 1st, was gonna use, "Don't Stand so Close to Me."

This is a very little known but interesting story. Originally, “Behind The Mask” was done in 1978 by Ryuichi Sakamoto as an instrumental. It was featured on a Seiko watch commercial. It was recorded by Sakamoto’s band as a whole, the Yellow Magic Orchestra and was first released on the album, “Solid State Survivor”. In 1980, it was released as a single by the YMO. Sometime after the Yellow Magic Orchestra released“Behind The Mask”, the song was recorded by Michael Jackson’s vocals along with the lyrics written by him. This all happened after Quincy hit him up thinking that they could improve the song. Unfortunately, Michael was unable to put the song on Thriller due to legal battles with the Yellow Magic Orchestra. On the contrary, Greg Phillinganes (Michael’s Keyboardist) managed to successfully buy the rights for “Behind The Mask” and released it as his own single in 1984. It did alright as a song and it was the first version to reach the public that had Michael’s lyrics in it. Later in 1986, Phillinganes thought it’d be great if Eric Clapton could have a try at doing the song as well. As a result, Eric Clapton recorded, “Behind The Mask” with Phillinganes doing the backing vocals keyboards and Clapton released his version, “Behind The Mask” first featuring on his, “August” album in 1986 and later releasing it as a single in 1987. Michael’s version had mostly been in the shadows until a year after his death in 2009. It was remixed by John McClain and featured on Michael’s posthumous album, “Michael” . It also was released as a single a few months after. The tapes were restored by Michael’s estate after being untouched for nearly 40 years. Michael’s version remixed by McClain received positive critical reception in the end.

Thanks for sharing that. I just found out that Michael Jackson also recorded this song. I only knew of Eric Clapton’s version. August is one of my favorite Clapton solo albums. In my opinion, Michael’s version can’t complete with Eric’s. Thanks for that bit of trivia. Im into stuff like that.😊

Yes. Great summary of the story behind this cut which is an absolute banger. Would have fit in on THRILLER, even conceptually. Very propulsive, with enigmatic lyrics that invite personal interpretation. Really love this cut.

First I only knew Eric Clapton's version (and god damn i fell in love so hard, this man is so incredible), but then i heard the other 2 or 3 versions and was very confused who wrote the lyrics bc i found out that the Yellow Magic Orchestra version was an instrumental😂 but does that mean that phillinganes stole Michael's lyrics and kept the rights??
