I was disappointed that they chose the name witches to label them instead of something unique like Jedi or Sith. It seemed lazy and lost some of the other worldly mystique.

Actually, they first showed up in a legends novel that takes place a little bit after RotJ, Han wins Dathomir in a game of Sabacc, kidnaps Leia because he thinks she's going to marry another guy. There's two groups living on the planet, the mountain witches, like the ones in Morgan Elsbeth's episode of Tales of the Empire, and the other group, which Nightsisters are more closely based off. Many would be saddened to learn that in legends they rode rancors, unlike their canon counterparts. Star Wars Legends, while crazy at times, is better than anything Disney has put out, unless it was made by those already closely affiliated with the franchise, like Filoni and Zhan.
