"Don't be too far ahead of your time." And the good doctor is hard at work turning our understanding of life and intelligence on their ears. I'd love to see what he'd get up to if being too far ahead wasn't a concern.

And cross-disciplinary too, combining biology & neuroscience research with cybernetic theory.... _wa-a-ay_ ahead of his time! And this guy has been doing this kinda stuff for awhile... why the heck hasn't he won a Nobel Prize yet?!

Excellent interview Vance. So much there to reflect on, to marvel at, to digest. Thank you for inviting Dr. Levin. What an exciting scientist.

I think he will be back on in February- anything I should be sure to ask him?

If it isn’t too late, I wonder what Levin thinks of consciousness. Is it emergent from processes in the brain? If so, how so? Thank you.

@@VanceCrowePodcast Other Question please: Is it right to see the DNA as the thing that determines the initial conditions of the system (the living creature) and perhaps the thing that causes transient modifications upon receiving certain stimuli or being in a certain state. Other than that the system evolves depending on the interactions (communication and more) among its constituents (cells) and interaction between the constituents and environment.

Ultimately I don't go all the way with Dr. Levin but the majority of his message seems so important for the dark triad of modern science, cognitive science-evolutionary biology-artificial intelligence. The neural-centric perspective needs to be transcended.

Most informative and challenging, touching a diversity of fundamental concepts of cognition. Thank you very much to you both.

Seems that it would be worth a look by Levin at inter-octopus communication---"talk"--as it seems to be generated via the integrated circuitry of its tissue and displayed in a more universally-distributed way that almost any other living entity. They offer a glimpse at full-body, universally-distributed thinking/talking. I wonder if Levin has studied these creatures to any extent.

What was the cut approx 27:16? Was the example too boring or too risqué?

What is a soul, and is there anything immortal in a human?

I think a soul is only something one can believe in.

@@VanceCrowePodcast The ancient philosophers' writings and eye witness near death experiences by many would tend to refute it is only belief. If its only a belief and not real, then Michael Levin should not use terms like "spiritual", and why would Levine or anyone bother with anything at all, much less pursuing or studying the electrical characteristics of human cells? No my friend, there is a part of us all that is eternal.

@@VanceCrowePodcast I think Professor Michael Levin's research lends credence to the idea that we're individuated consciousnesses that have manifested in the physical world. It might not prove it as such, but it definitely makes it seem more than just an ad hoc matter of faith in my opinion.

Levin maljudges human potential as pets for god. Pythagorean theorem wasn't invented or discovered but bestowed upon us by god like throwing his goddog a bone.
