so then am I taking it too literally and is he talking about a real incident? Isn't that what you are supposed to do if people are talking about a real incident? Take them literally? And no he wasn't, he was speaking generally and making claims about what supposedly common. He is taking an obvious dig. "One thing about America is that I found in America they don't care what you do outside of America, it doesn't matter. You could be the biggest Hollywood guy in Bollywood. You come to America they stop you at the border and ask you if you're Muslim." Then the co-host jumps in and makes a comment about how even if someone is British, Americans supposedly want to know "why do you talk funny." This while he over uses the word "like" and "bro'".

@looes74 looes74 I don't think he ever lived in Hong Kong. He was born in Malaysia (Johor Bahru - just across Singapore), and grew up in the US and then lived and study in Singapore for 10 years. Subsequently, he went to Melbourne for university education and settled there. You may have picked up some of his Cantonese accents.

I think it's because they changed the format of the videos or the way they do them now. Before they changed how they did things it used to be a review of the place or type of cuisine and the guests featured would usually either be a person that grew up eating that cuisine or is familiar with the specific restaurant. Now it's just a interview of the guest and the food barely gets talked about.
@wind7519

As Eddie Huang, a prominent Asian voice in the food scene, once said something about how food is a gateway to understanding and empathizing with other people and cultures. I feel that's what the Fung Bros. do. It has never been just about the delicious food that has been shown. There's always something bigger and deeper they show and talk about. Glad at least you respect that.
@IanCookUS

Windelesk yeah I mean as a white person from the midwest US, TV shows that explore cuisine around the word, a la Anthony Bourdain (RIP), had a huge influence in my desire/acceptance/understanding/interest of many cultures. I think Fung Bros do something similar here.

What? Well, they are bright and charming young men, interesting conversation to be sure, but they made a point of sitting in the best Dim Sum place around! If they wanted to just sit in a studio they could have. THEY brought it up! I LOVE that kind of food, and don't have very good access to it, to the point where I make one or two of those things we saw myself, out of desperation. So, I can easily see why people might have liked a few more remarks about the dishes, especially things that were outstanding.

Reddit gets frustrating. It's an echochamber for negativeness and cynicism most of the time. Everything sucks, nothing and no one is good enough, anything new or not already popular is shit or try-hard. These vids are great- definitely a comedians getting coffee feel. Great balance of great food and great conversation. Also, YES to everything Ronnie was saying. The "bubbles," the food, the villainizing of oppositional stances. YES. Keep spreading these things-I'm glad to be seeing more and more of this concept being spread around.

Great episode. 👏 The format of interviewing a celeb whilst eating good food really works. Definitely more common with professional Foodie channels now. Ronny Chieng is a go getter. Not afraid to push outside the box as an Asian. I'm in Australia and watched International Student in Australia, and it's pretty amusing. Pretty simple humour, and I'm sure that international students in foreign countries will definitely be able to relate. 💖

Ronny Chieng is the most underrated comic ever. He's really cute, smart, and articulate. He even talks about all the bubbles, like the SJW bubble, PC bubble, and Bernie Bro bubble! He's so spot on about the pretentions and hypocrisy of everything. He's way more eloquent and thoughtful than the Fung Bros, or pretty much anyone else. I get him more than practically any other celebrity. He'll never be very popular, though - people don't like his very Asian look, multi-layered accent, etc. He says better Mandarin than most ABCs - and he speaks Cantonese, too. Love how the old Asian guy in the racist clip takes a puff out of his cigarette. Andrew: "Oh, Asians DO have thoughts." Nope, no matter what we say, we have no clout. Just dismissed and disregarded by all other races. This video confirms that David is the smarter and nicer of the two, though he's no Ronny. Andrew's dumber, more of a party boy.
@fobuloustv
@fobuloustv 6 жыл бұрын
It sucks how the real Asians always seem to be underrated whereas those who don’t know the real Asian culture enough are more outspoken about the culture. I totally get Ronny’s point on Asians vs Asian Americans, the two are very very different. The reason why I enjoy this episode and Jimmy’s appearance is because they’re the real deal, the real Asians who can speak the language, truly know about both worlds and are super positive about it.

Btw, I don't think racism is more rampant in U.S. its just about overt racism and covert racism, Australia and NZ do not have a long history of battling against racism. Therefore, a lot of things that are deemed to be racist in U.S are considered to be okay in Australia (At least somewhat acceptable). However, its not to say that one form of racism is better than the other, its just that if people are being racist in U.S, they are doing it intentionally because the topic has been brought up a lot. While, the racists in Australia are not as well informed about such topics.
