Michelin-Starred Jean-Georges' Hot Dog vs. A NYC Street Cart

Michelin-Starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten offers a $6 hot dog out of a cart outside The Mark Hotel in New York City. CNBC producer Chris DiLella compared this hot dog with one from a NYC street vendor. Which one wins the taste test?
French-American chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten is one of the world's most famous culinary artists and restaurateurs.
But in addition to his empire of high-end eateries around the globe - including his namesake Jean-Georges in New York, which has a coveted two-Michelin-star rating - Vongerichten has a hot dog cart on Manhattan's Upper East Side that sells $6 franks.
I spoke with Vongerichten at his street cart, while reporting on The Mark Hotel's $75,000 per night penthouse suite - the most expensive in America. Vongerichten runs The Mark Restaurant there, and his hot dog cart is parked right outside.
You're probably thinking: Why would a world-famous chef have a hot dog cart? Hot dogs are Vongerichten's favorite NYC street food, so he and the hotel's owner came up with the idea.
"New York hot dogs are great," Vongerichten tells me. "But ours are better."

I'm a life long NYer. You haven't been able to get a dog off a cart in Manhattan for 2 bucks since the late 90's. But native NYers don't eat dirty water dogs anyway. Carts are for tourist and emergencies.

I’ve lived in NYC my whole life and never spent more than $2 on a hotdog, $3 if I got a soda. The thought of a “gourmet” hotdog is so foreign I almost feel injured

I lived here my whole life as well, never paid more than 2 dollars for a dirty water dog, they're cheap, quick, and classic, I love em... but also love serious, better quality... "gourmet dogs". Some of the crazy hot dog restaurants I've been to, or some that I've made myself with crazy toppings just takes the "hot dog" to another level than a classic NY dog..

The problem is he says the reason why it's better is that "it's made by a chef with a 2 star michelin resturant for just $2 more." I was expected him to actually comment on taste not go by prestige, if that was his attitude why even try both in the first place, why even make this video? Unless this is just an ad for this chef's hot dog stand?

I don't understand how it was pretentious. There was no caviar. There was no gold sheets. There was no foie gras. It only had sauerkraut, kimchi, yuzu pickles, an Organic frank, Ketchup, Mustard, and Sriracha mayo. For 6 dollars that is not bad. These ingredients are obviously made I'm house and are as fresh it can be. It's not that hard to make people. It's just pickling some stuff and mixing some stuff. If you call that pretentious, I wonder what real pretentious food is. lmao
@aquiariots72
@aquiariots72 5 жыл бұрын
It was an organic Michelin Star chicken hot dog. That, in itself, is pretentious. You could stop right there. But add, Sriracha Mayo, kimchi, yuzu pickles and you still don't think this is pretentious ?? This is hot dog a pretentious New Yorker orders but doesn't eat. Brings it home and shows it to friends so they can see how cool a hot dog he can order.
