Criss-crossing Michigan are hundreds of miles of old railroad beds no longer in operation. Over the years, many of these have been turned into Rails to Trails systems -- multi-use pathways for walking, running, cycling, rollerblading, skiing, and sometimes snowmobiling. The White Pine Trail State Park is a linear state park stretching 93 miles from Comstock Park to Cadillac. It meanders through a mix of forests, farmlands, and wetlands and a fun trail to follow.

You've done a really nice job of introducing the WPT. I usually make an annual trip from home in Cadillac to Comstock Park on my bicycle as well as making almost daily rides on the northern half of the trail. It's a tremendous resource. Hopefully the section between Big Rapids and Sand Lake will be paved in the near future. Thanks for your video! Bob

Somehow we missed this comment, or it did the magical KZfaq disappearing and reappearing act. We're glad you liked the video, Mike. Thanks for watching and commenting!

When I was a kid we would go to the fishery in Paris! Spent a lot of big in Big Rapids, Reed City, and Cadillac! My Grandparents lived in the small town of Luther between Reed City and Cadillac. I still love it up there!

A lot of Jessi's family is from Big Rapids. I'm always surprised how many people we run into who are from that area considering it's a lot of small towns. But it is a nice area, so maybe that's why. -Ari

The map at the 1:23 mark is not the old track line of the Grand Rapids Indiana Railroad that became the White Pine Trail. The gray line appears to be U.S. Route 127 and the blue line Interstate-75. But, the trail would ONLY be, 30-50 miles west of the map depicted. Maxwell Smart would say, "missed it by that much." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZimjdKfuKq5l58.html

You are correct, that those are US 127 and I-75. I pulled up the route on Google Maps just to show it to people, not to show what the actual rail line was. Those are the existing roadways between the cities that the rail line originally covered. So you and I are both right, or we both missed it by just that much. Great reference by the way! 😄 -Ari

What s the status of the unpaved section? How long is it, are they working on it and would 1.50 wide tires be good enough to make it through. Thanks.

The last we saw, there are still 29 miles of trail that aren't paved. The latest reports we found said people thought the gravel sections weren't bad to ride on, but there are some spots where it's a little rougher plus there are some areas that have more sand to them. I've also read reviews where people said anything but a road bike should be able to tackle the entire length, which runs about 93 miles. -Ari

I don't know the current (2023) figure. More of the trail has been paved since this video. As far as I know, the remaining unpaved sections are all between Big Rapids and Sand Lake (Kent County). 1.50 tires will be fine just about every where on the unpaved sections.

We haven't ridden all of it, but the parts we have been on, especially up north in the Big Rapids area, seem quiet and safe. It's all about keeping your whits about you and, as you said, not continuing if you start to feel uncomfortable. Thanks for watching! -Ari

@@Trekers the part in big rapids is not safe at all, bodies found there frequently. Disturbing
@Trekers
@Trekers 2 жыл бұрын
That would be disturbing, but this is the first we've heard of this and we have family that live in Big Rapids. None of them have mentioned a problem or feeling unsafe around the trail.
