Agony! I Feared I'd Never Walk Our Woodland Again. Winter in Our Corner of England. In November I began filming the final part of my year-long series of videos documenting the changing wildlife and landscape of Our Corner of England. It is a modest acreage of family-owned woodland which is being regenerated from open cast coal mining in the English Midlands. For centuries, this part of the country was crisscrossed with railways which were built to transport what was then black gold - coal, along with other minerals and industrial freight. From Medieval times the landscape in this part of the English Midlands was mined and dug deep and surrounded by massive spoil heaps, pumping stations and foundries. It was a black, despoiled blight on the land until exhausted mines were closed, railways abandoned and the scars left to heal over as best as they could. Then the National Forest was a created, an ambitious 20th Century project to re-forest much of this land, to open it to the public, to bring back the flora and fauna to what was once poisoned and grim land. Our Corner of England is a tiny, privately-owned part of that massive project. As I filmed the land as it plunged into winter, I somehow damaged a nerve in my spine resulting in a severe case of meralgia parasthetica, preventing me from walking more than a few yards. One day in December I left the wood in for many, many weeks, virtually immobile and confined mostly to home and unable to walk our woodland. During this agonizing and worrying period, my trail cameras, looking out over our badger sett, were my eyes in the woods. This is the story.
I'm Mick Grewcock, retired from business and now self-learning the art of film-making.
My subjects are many but centre on our English landscape and its wildlife and I often feature our own woodland - Our Corner of England.

Excellent video! Genuinely one of the best videos I have seen on KZfaq in maybe 12 months, and I watch hundreds of videos each week. The footage, presentation and narration were as good as anything I have ever seen. This reminded me of BBC Planet Earth and an episode of Spring Watch rolled into one. This is the sort of stuff that KZfaq should be recommending to people. Interesting, educational and inspiring. Glad you are feeling better now as well. I look forward to seeing the next video!

Thank you Heli! Majority natural light (of course the brief indoor clips were incandescent lighting). I don't use filters on the lenses (expect ND and UV) but I do colour grade what footage I can (drone and trip cam footage don't grade at all well, but stuff off the GH5 can be tweaked). This one was kind of nod toward teal-and-orange like the old Kodak film. Mick

@@MickGrewcock My friend, please dont be so quick to give up your love of archery unless and until your own body gives you a clear and unambiguous "NO", because (from experience) some things you can actually train around, and somethings you cant. In my case, things like kayaking, aikido and backpacking were incompatible with my lower back issues, so those are examples of hard NOs for me ... but my shoulders can still handle archery. Maybe not deep in the woods (too much walking implied) but certainly within say a half mile of the nearest road ... that's a "soft NO" I could work with. Ditto cast fishing, and i'm still pretty mean with a slingshot (a 3/8" steel ball bearing at 160-200 FPS is enough for squirrels and rabbits)😊 Keep going, friend ... esp for those of us out here who envy you the options you still have. You're still an inspiration.👍

I finally managed 20 3Ds in January at Fleet Ibex with 30lb limbs and pushing an all-terrain walker to help support my back, along with my fellow archers from N.A.D.A. - I just couldn't stay away from the woods, I'm glad you found your way back too. xx

Could be wrong but I think it may well be the Muntjac Deer . Invasive species introduced into the UK from China in the 20th century. Originally intended as an ornamental herd species, I think . I have also read that a larger species of Muntjac was imported from India. They bred , and spread, prolifically , and are now considered in many areas to be a somewhat destructive pest. Meat is edible as they are a deer and thus venison. Many regard it as a superior meat to harvest.

@@pbsamanthamarie Many would think so , yet others would object. They see only cute little deer, not the wreckage they can turn woodland into if they become overstocked, and over feed on shoots, saplings and bark etc. To me competent, constructive, control and management of some species is an essential aspect of nurturing ,preserving and protecting woodlands.

DustyPilgrim is spot-on, the deer are muntjac. As Dusty says, it's non-native and not always welcome in woodlands. However, they do no appreciable harm in our woodland and are more than welcome. We don't harvest any or control in any way - there are about 4-5 families in the area. Very secretive and will lie low rather than bolt so quite possible to walk straight past one lying up. Decades ago I fractured five vertebrae and did a load of collateral nerve damage etc, swelling on the spinal column , the whole shebang. Did a stupidly good job on wrecking things. A long two year run of physio and surgical comeback before any mobility reclaimed. However, despite no long walks left in me these days I still have some mobility. Look after yourself and pace things . Don't over work things. It can undo the gains very swiftly. Take care .

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed - appreciate the encouragement and comment. Ouch, your experience way worse than mine, and mine wasn't nice. You are right about going careful though - I did a little too much pottering about a month ago and put myself back 2-3 weeks. Anyway, thanks for being there as ever. Mick

@@MickGrewcock Sorry to hear of your blow, I wonder if it was maybe the warbow shooting that inflamed it? Then the cold hit and laid you low? Robin Hood Archery guy has been really hammered due to his lack of warming up for years of shooting. I've had minor mishaps from a mere '55' lb longbow (stiff and tough as it's a lemonwood self-bow).

Starlingchaser Starlingchaser 1 second ago I used many herbs for Lyme disease, but by far the most useful onr for my spinal chord was madder (rubia tinctorum)... I ate it by the handful several times a day. (The above ground parts)... .I had a bit less each week for a month or two and every day, I improved until I didn't need it any more...

@@MickGrewcock It's obvious I was doing some copying and pasting there... Mick, the madder isn't a remedy for Lyme, it's a remedy for sciatica, which the Lyme caused... Madder, strangely, cures sciatica, whatever the cause... I don't know how or why, but it certainly worked on me...

Mick, and anyone else who would like to comment, I would like to know your opinion on something; I love nature, and I love watching videos such as these. I am often alone, though. Do you have good ideas on how a person can enjoy nature when they are alone? I know that there are practical tips, such as to bring a form of protection if you are going to be in an area with carnivorous animals, and to wear high boots if there may be snakes around. But there is also the mental aspect of it, which is what I want to master: so often we enjoy experiences when we can share them with another person. As a female, I feel that this is even more true, generally speaking, because we are physically not the stronger gender. But I have seen women fishing alone or enjoying nature alone in some other way, and I have also seen men doing it alone too. It's difficult for me to explain more of the mental hurdle that I'm talking about, but I think there are a lot of people who know what I mean. Maybe part of it is keeping our attention span on what we are doing, or being able to enjoy it alone, and being able to enjoy our own company. If you have tips, I would love to hear. Maybe you can even do a video on it! Thank you for reading!

Hello Samantha. Your question is perfectly valid and I will do my best to answer you. But may I first ask in which country you live and also (you don't have to answer either if you don't want to) your age? I know and have known and met many women who travel alone, fly aeroplanes alone, walk alone and so on. And I am myself a 'loner' - not in a negative sense, merely that I can function alone. All these videos on my channel (300 wish) are made entirely by me alone and I have travelled in places where gender is immaterial - they are dangerous for any sex. Thanks for watching and pop me a message if you wish here. Mick

Hi Samantha I live in NZ which is relatively safe the main risk here is the elements followed a long way back by humans. I often go "tramping" or hunting alone often for a weekend or sometimes up to a week. Its a great thing I love it. Here the elements are a serious and real risk hypothermia is a quick and ruthless killer but those are all manageable risks and part of the challenge which can vary depending on where you are. If you do run into other humans then they are usually out for the same reason as you so won't harm you but more likely respect you for your efforts. Mental strength is a different thing all together for some the isolation is invigorating and meditative for some it can be destructive or negative something for me that is variable and generally character building generally positive but not always totally. I guess its another thing to manage within ourselves if its not your thing then don't put yourself at risk but if you can then short trips at first until you get to know what your limits are. I live in a country with vast untracked areas of parks mountain ranges where you can wander at will still its amazing how many people you come across on their own, men and women. Mick Grewcocks videos take us to a place that is parallel to that awesome feeling of being out there alone the good bits :) thanks Mick and good luck Samantha go experience a little even if its just a 1 hour walk in the woods.

@@MickGrewcock US and 37 John Edwards Thank you. To explain the mental thing a little more, it's that I don't know about the animals, and I want to ask the person I'm with about them. For example, I may pass an animal den and not even know it, but my companion may know. I don't know what to look for, so it gets boring really fast. The only thing I can think of is putting a trail camera up in one spot for a few nights, and doing it in different spots every few nights.

Hi Samantha. I think I might understand your dilemma - perhaps mild anxiety about being alone in nature without a companion to guide you, and also learning about the type of mental fitness that is appropriate for moving safely in an environment that is new to you and in which it is easy to imagine holds hidden dangers. I guess the first thing to ask is: what is your ideal? Do you wish to move alone, confidently and with knowledge in the outdoors so as to enjoy nature - or would you ultimately prefer to always have a companion with you? I, personally, aspire to be the former: to have self-confidence and adequate knowledge of my environment whilst enjoying the experience. The fact that you are female should have no bearing on your thoughts about being alone (save for the normal and sadly necessary cautions) - some of the women I have known and know in my life travel or have traveled alone in such places as the Middle East and Africa, and these places hold many more dangers than the natural world in the USA. Your idea of setting up a trail cam is excellent. Not only will you learn the skills required to operate such devices but, out of necessity, you will have to begin to learn about animal tracks and trails - for the best way to photograph or film wildlife is to set a camera on wildlife trails or drinking places. Taking a skill into the wilds is a great 'protection' - a writer, painter, chef, sculptor, photographer, hunter, etc., carries with them knowledge of their own skill allowing them to explore the outdoors with greater confidence. Do you have other skills that you could deploy? You say that you can become bored because you are not seeing aspects of nature that others can see who have experience in the field. Unless you have a companion to teach you - and maybe you don't want someone with you - then you must start small. A short walk, maybe with one specific aim - identify three trees, find a particular bird species, watch the sunrise, identify a planet in the night sky. By doing this you will build your knowledge and confidence step-by-step, day by day. Assemble together some basic items useful in woods - a backpack, fire steel, knife, simple first aid kit, etc - then learn to use them. In so doing, it is certain you will meet a person or persons who are enjoying the same space. They might know fire-lighting, the night sky, the song of the bird you are seeking. And so you will build another layer of knowledge - and you will perhaps have your own skill to share, maybe some of your trail cam footage on your cell phone to show them. I have moved alone in field and wood for about sixty years, and each day I explore more, find things I hadn't seen before, etc. You are just 37 years young, plenty of time to work on your love of nature and to become comfortable with yourself whilst alone in the great outdoors. You can do it, you can become admired by people younger than you for what you learn; you can build on your knowledge of life and people by feeling your way out into nature whether alone or with others. I love traveling with my wife and friends, but I also set forth alone most of the time, whether to Africa or India, whether to the woods or hills, whether with a camera or just my lovely dog Ben. You are all you've got Samantha, step out with confidence. Good luck and if you wish you can always find my email address in the About section. Mick
