I'm Mick Grewcock, retired from business and now self-learning the arts of longbow- and film-making. Join me in my light-hearted quest for knowledge as I learn to combine the ancient woodworking craft of bow-making with digital videography and film making - I'd be delighted to have you for company on this bizarre journey combining digital and primitive technology.
I have a deep passion for the medieval English longbow, the great warbow - the powerful version of the English longbow that earned its fearsome reputation during the Middle Ages, notably the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the ferocious battle fields of France and England during the One Hundred Years War (and in the hands of Robin Hood too!). It is an iconic weapon - and to this day, exudes heritage and awesome power.
Lots of bow making on my channel - do browse, view, like comment and subscribe. I have videos on making yew, hazel, elm and blackthorn longbows as well as many others related to primitive and instinctive archery, target archery arrow and bow making. In my videos you will see and hear what it is like to self learn bow making. I am self-taught as a bowyer - learning the hard way to work wood to make a bow - and still discovering every day. Sometimes I fail, sometimes I succeed; but I'm always learning. I also explore the UK's rural landscape, sometimes in search of bow making woods, discovering survival skills, sometimes in search of the glories of this landscape.

Thank you , Mick. After being inspired by your videos, I've started my first bow. The wood comes from what I think is an ash tree but I'm not too sure. After a few hours of measuring and hacking, it is now slowly starting to bend. Can't wait to see if it will launch an arrow!

@@MickGrewcock i know how blessed i am to live here. I was an army brat posted in Germany for five years. Now that is culture shock. I would lament for Canada. There is nothing for kilometers here. But its filled with everything. I could remember as a kid looking for green in Germany. And just finding stone. It was like an ocean of bricks and mortar. Punctuated by farmers fields. And when i did find bush. It was sparse.... Like it was a fake forest. The scars of ww2 just everywhere. It drained the beauty and everything good that use to be. Anyways🤗...Love your videos and you are the absolute best.

@@hammerstoneartifacts4986 The grass always seems greener elsewhere but, as you have described, it's not actually true. Yes bits of Europe are still very scarred - the people too. We still feel the dark shadow of what happened to us and our neighbours during WW1 and 2. Enjoy your land, you and I are lucky compared to many. We might both complain - but I think we both know as you said in your comment - that we are blessed. Goodnight from across the waters. Mick

So Mick, you never had a go at a flat-bow design? When you eventually try one out, I highly recommend “Sudbury” style bows, used by the North Eastern Natives here in North America. It’s a blend of a classic “D” style longbow, with a graceful narrow grip and longer fades. The grip is non-bending. I think it would be a great starter for you as it has a smooth and stack-less draw much like the English Longbows you build (which I have never built but would love too) and very little hand shock. The issue with a flatbow is that someone who builds them the first time can make the fades to steep and create a hinge near the fade. Either way, another great video. Cheers

Thank you Aaron. No I've never made a proper flatbow and I appreciate your input. A flatbow is the style I shall be attempting at the end of this series. I have some seasoned cherry (a wood I've never used) which I hope to try. Great suggestion and a useful tip for a flatbow beginner! Thanks again. Mick

@@MickGrewcock A common flatbow/fades error is to create a mismatch in the layout taking the thickness taper in the fades out of step with the width taper, forcing a failure under tension when the bow is bent far enough, causing a pair of splits to pop, running into the base of the inner limb from the handle end of the fade. This happens where the outer edges have become flexible while the centre remains stiff along the same portion of the transition from handle to limb. Many will have done this at least once, but it's one of those lessons from which only the truly obtuse fail to learn. Safer to carry a little of the non-bending length into the full limb width. (Also think about how short/abrupt a fade needs to be and why?)

Simple choices have an effect on the outcome. Will there be a benefit, no real difference, or a disadvantage? Some problems are created by poor decision making. Know what to do and why you are doing it.

I do not sell my bows so I cannot say from experience. For one person of good skill in the UK I would say that if making just self bows then it would be possible to make a modest living from making bows. That's about all I can say.

Like fire: a good servant, but a terrible master, and a litlle thing I experienced: work slower that you would like to, you can always remove more wood but you can not ad it if you have taken too much, and this advice work espesially when doing something new. Sorry for the spelling

Yes. It is so easy to rush ahead. But novice bowmaking needs you, as you say, to work slower. Good luck.
