I like what you said about the same "species" of wood being different densities. A lot of people don't realize that there are many different species of most tree types. Even red oak and white oak have many different species within their two classifications. I wouldn't expect a northern red oak to have the same characteristics as a scarlet oak have been though for some purposes they are both classified as reds. Hickory is the same way and as you said so is maple. I can see for furniture and decorative purposes why there is no distinction, but making a bow you are introducing a lot of stress variables that may have shine light on different characteristics. Could be a very interesting bow making series to try and isolate some of those characteristics

I think as a general rule of thumb, the better the wood the thicker the bow or narrower relatively speaking but the poorer the wood the wider or longer it needs to be because length also has the same effect as width being that the wood is not under so much strain

Just some thoughts. I've seen this in a few books. Sinew has more elasticity than fiberglass, and horn as well as several types of wood, have a better compression structure than fiberglass.

Could you give me adivce, store bought 1.75 s, 65 inchers, 4 inch total fades. Tappered to .625 ish, i wonder if i need to distal tapper the limbs or keep them parralel thickness after fades, and dont care what weight is, hopping 60 at least, estimate 53 specific gravity. Havent dried a sample though.

I dont know much about bows. I have been to some museums. Once I see some old native American bows, I was stunned about how thin they was. Like less than the with of two fingers together.....How could the mighty Comanches make any mayhem with that ? Another type was the eskimo/ inuit bows with horn handle. Two rather short libs of wood was tied to the handle and with this little thing these people feed their family.....Have to confess this is fascinating.

I would like your pdf on wood density/SG but it says in the link that it has been removed. Also, I'd like to understand the method you used to create it so I can use your formula to understand the parameters of woods that don't fall under the SG that you used in the pdf. Thank you and I love tour videos for your style, talent, creativity and fearlessness of experimentation. Keep posting. M

One can experiment, from scratch, but why? By using information that is readily available, one can build bows from others point of reference. This doesn’t mean you have to adhere strictly to the design. But starting from a well proven design really helps with the learning curve. Boyers Bible, volume 1 is an excellent reference.

Garbled and contradictory... density is no indicator of suitability. Example Beech vs Yew. The word is also modulus not modules. You are right about experiment and experience... but not with fibreglass tape it is a horrible idea that simply masks errors and will hinder your learning about making wooden bows.
