Microhome bordering the desert as refuge for writing

In Far West Texas, at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, the little town of Marfa has served as an ideal setting for movies like “Giant” (1956) and “No Country for Old Men” and for artists looking for a refuge. Writer Clara Bensen cut short a road trip to settle here and create in solitude from a tiny, stacked home.
Her home, dubbed the “10 x 10 Lightbox” by its architect Candid Rogers, consists of two stacked boxes clad in Corten Steel (though never used for shipping). The bottom box holds an open kitchen/dining area backed by a bathroom. A nautical staircase leads up to the bedroom/study on the upper level.
At the edge of a stretch of empty desert, the tiny size might appear unnecessary but was designed to provide carefully orchestrated views of the vast expanses. Bensen treats the changing scenery as her television and documents the plants and wildlife (like rabbits, snakes, and javelina).
Bensen appreciates the focus and isolation her home brings to her work. She’s currently at work on her second book. Her first was a memoir, “No Baggage”, documenting her minimalist travels (from Istanbul to London with limited funds, no hotels, and only one outfit); it has been optioned as a movie with Shailene Woodley attached.

Tarantulas are not dangerous -- just scary. Where I live, we have tarantulas (the giant harmless hairy spiders) and the real tarantulas (the European ones, after the town Taranto -- there's confusion in naming), known as 'wolf-spiders,' which are smaller, aggressive, fast, and venomous. Also, black widows but I've never seen one in 10 years, to be honest, so they are only technically here. And vipers, too. But we also have 50% more cats than people on the whole island, so they kinda balance things out.

This brings back so many lovely memories of time my spouse and I spent in Marfa, we saw this house from afar and were so close to impulsively buying another tiny house called The Big Bird Art Studio. We eventually came back to our own tiny house cabins in the Santa Cruz Mountains, both recently destroyed by wildfire. I love this, we finally got to see the inside of this striking place - thank you so much for this. The train, the sky, all of the possibility, I wish the new owner all the best and hope she does exciting things with the space.

Hey!!! I grew-up in Globe, Arizona, but my family is all from Marfa, Alpine and Big Spring, TX. My Nana and Tata are buried in Marfa. They lived right under the water tower, practically. I used to go to Judge Scalia's courthouse and mess with the Christmas lights and play in the prisoners cage. I've had many good times there. My cousins lived right by the courthouse. I have seen the Marfa Lights, as well. I was born in Alpine, TX

Why? It’s a micro home. You LIMIT space. I’m not crazy about the cooking arrangements but everything else is doable. There are plenty of other styles of microphones “tiny homes” that suit any lifestyle. This is just more for the writer’s lifestyle and I think It’s cool as hell.

@@Alusnovalotus The structure (although ridiculously close to your neighbor like you're still in the city) is beautiful…even without a decent stove. But….....Black widows, snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, etc. = HELL to the NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER NOT EVER
@tubulartuber
@tubulartuber 3 жыл бұрын
@@Alusnovalotus for the engineering cost of cantilevering the bedroom, they could have easily extended the ground floor by 10 feet in length instead, which would mean you never had to play tetris on a twice daily basis just to eat your meals. It would have also meant they could put in a proper set of stairs instead of a glorified ladder, and probably afforded to put a bathroom door in. And on top of all that (no pun intended), the ground area covered by the cantilevered bedroom isn't even in use! no deck below it, not even some plastic lawn chairs. So what's the point? It's not about how large the home is, but how the home uses its volume. And in this case they chose to spend a lot of money on useless cantilevered volume that literally serves nothing other than an aesthetic purpose. Also, the architect decides to put the biggest glazing on the west side, in the fucking desert no less, so not only does it dramatically increase the air conditioning costs, you also get a great view of the highway and Dollar General(?) instead of the undeveloped desert?

5 years ago I found a letter from the year 1913 that blew out of someone's vehicle, from a man to his new wife. He wrote it from Marfa, TX. His wife was staying with her aunt, working a little, and he expressed how much hei missed his sweetheart. He was working but he could not bear any more time away from his wife. It was so striking to me that I used it in the next ssrvice I preached. It affected everyone, positively. It also made me want to visit Marfa, even if for only a day or a week. In the winter, only. I had a Texas sized heat stroke in El Paso 7 years ago that caused me to have to retire. So... Winter only.

What I would struggle with a bit is the lack of what I would consider comfortable seating in the interior of the home with just small wood cubes to sit on. I'm actually quite curious about her book and how she travelled with just one outfit. Pretty quirky. Would also be curious to know how her partner manages to live there full-time. I had the same experience with the sky when I visited Canada. Because I'm used to the hills and mountains at home, I thought the sky was gigantic when I was there

@@secondact7151 I do really love it. Everywhere I‘ve lived has been humid, and I absolutely love being outside when it’s 100, and if you’re not doing anything strenuous, you won’t break a sweat, or I don’t. We haven’t seen the spiders, but we’ve had a scorpion in the house and two Mohave rattlesnakes in the yard. Still, I would move here again. I do really miss the trees I was used to, especially in fall.

I've been on an acre with bad neighbors next door. Never again. That would be way to close for me unless I owned both and could control the tenant selection.

Marfa, Texas ... Driving across America, east to west, west to east, several times; I've explored off-road western Texas, but never Marfa. The land is barren, to say the least. It's not a place that would capture most people as a place to make home. The idea that this one area would be preferred by artists, with property values rising ... is beyond imagining. Yet, it's fact. Thank you Google algorithm, and a "tip of the hat" to those who choose Marfa as their place to be.

If she cleans a lot she should take care of the table-thing, the wood doesn’t like water from the plants and cooking stuff... if she would wax it, it would be better instead

it's so dry in west texas, there's no mold or mildew or anything like that (except maybe next to a waterfall, which would only be seasonal, at best), water evaporates relatively immediately, and completely. that's why you can reuse old old wood and continue to live in old houses: the dryness makes it last forever...though i agree that wax would be a good idea, maybe spray-on oil too. it'd at least make it more supple though that wood looks amazing. GREAT carpentry, beautiful home.

She was also bending over. I would have a different table for cooking. Maybe make one more to slide over. It could be pivoted out to be cooked on. Maybe even a hollow opening to hold the cooktop. I'm thinking a shiny black acrylic or clear. Easy clean up and the correct height.
