Tomatoes are tough. Years ago, I was weeding the back yard. Suddenly I came across a 'weed' in the middle of the plain grass area. I looked at it, and I had a feeling that I knew this plant. It was a tomato 🍅 plant. This was my yard, and had never had vegetables planted in this area. But, there it was, peeking out in all of it's 4" glory. I think that a seed must have been brought in stuck to some bird's leg. So, I left it, and nurtured it, and - surprise, it was cherry tomatoes! And not only that, but, it grew up to be enormous, and the metal cage I started it in, quickly disappeared as it grew to about 5' high and took two people joining hands, to encircle it. And the best part, was that that bush produced so many layers of cherry tomatoes, that I was able to share with several neighbors. That little group of baby, fuzzy leaves is now a cherished memory.

Yes, my dad had a “volunteer” tomato plant that bore fruit for several years. He was in Southern California so the weather allowed the “perennial” production. Many nights he’d pick a bowl full of tomatoes for his dinner. I think volunteers are often small tomatoes because they came from a hybrid fruit that’s reverting back to a dominant smaller ancestor? Just a semi-educated guess.

Wow! How cool was that! I too had an experience similar to you. In my front yard, a huge vine grew. I let it grow. It put out inedible melons, but that thing was so long! It was in my front yard and anyone who walked by inquired . It had to get their by a bird dropping, it started up agains house, so I had to direct the vine to grow across my home, front porch and around the corner!! Lol….but I had fun that year with it….😊

Your vid reminded me of a vid I saw earlier this year with those cuttings. Who ever it was laid the cutting down (on soil, if I am remembering correctly) and it rooted in many places producing many shoots that were then planted as individual plants. I don't recall how long the cutting was or any of the info on what to look for, as in where along the cutting to expect shoots. Again, thanks for reminding me that you can grow new plants from the tomato cuttings. 👍👍👍👍👍

This late in the year, I root and grow my suckers hydroponically in a 5-gallon plastic bucket. This is because my late-season tomatoes are typically still bearing good fruit at the first frost. When that first frost does come, I simply bring the plants indoors. There are typically 3-4 weeks of good weather after that frost, and I move my plants back outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful, bug-free weather. The nutrient solution is cheap and easy to make (ask for mix). My hydroponic tomatoes taste just as good as the ones I grow in the soil.

For 5 gallons of nutrient solution I use: 10 mG of Masterblend 4-18-38 5 mG Epsom salt Dissolve this in 1-gallon of the water and when dissolved, then add: 10 mG of calcium nitrate with 4 gallons of water This makes 5 gallons of nutrient solution. Available as a kit from Amazon and others.

So glad you found valid information before you did that. It is so difficult to sort through what is out there and know what is safe and what is not. Thanks for your comments.

@@RoseRedHomestead I just found your videos a couple of days ago and I am really enjoying them. It is so good to hear an intelligent person who is interested in the truth about canning and is able to back up what your saying. I am tired of watching videos to find them taking "bubbles" out of a jar that has no liquid in it! Or talking about cleanliness while wiping their hands on their pants or apron. I am having only one problem canning. My canner is almost identical to yours and I raw pack chicken. Most of the jars are boiling and seal, but I always ht ave one or two that are not boiling and don't seal. I try very hard to make sure the canner is centered over the burner, but still happens. I just go ahead and use the jar of chicken that didn't seal. The chicken is cooked even though there is no bubbling from juices. I don't re-can for one or 2 jars. After seeing your instant pot video, I may get one. I'm canning for one now as my husband died last year. Thank you.
