In this episode of the Tutorial series we're looking into Flight Plan creation and how IFR Departure and Approach charts are utilized when planning a flight. Rather than using the in game flight planning we'll do it ourselves using the G1000's MFD and Simbrief.
Please try to watch the video until the end if you can, it covers a good chunk of valuable information that will become handy for the future tutorials when we step up the game! Please drop a comment for your questions and requests.

I am an aspiring pilot myself and one of the challenges on KZfaq is there aren't very many people that walk you through the systems and navigation of a basic GA plane, such as the C182, in great detail. Once I start my flight training, I will probably not be flying in a glass cockpit, but more on a basic GPS system. Nonetheless, I feel that by mastering the usage of the G1000, I should be able to transition down to a more basic GPS system much more easily as opposed to the other way around. Having said that, your thoroughness with your video's is absolutely awesome. You explain not just the G1000, but also how to read the charts, albeit on a more simplistic level. I realize you are not an actual pilot, but you could have fooled me with the amount of knowledge you have on this system. As a suggestion, I would continue with these types of video's for newbies. I really love it when a video will walk you through step-by-step on an entire flight, just like this one. How about doing a flight somewhere in the US? Anyways, keep up with the awesome videos.
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon, I always wanted to do a flight video in US. Do you have a suggestion for a good VOR to VOR destination? It could also open possibilities for a tutorial on steam gauge GA aircraft like the 172.
@brandonmix
@brandonmix 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSimPilot To be honest, I am still learning. I actually plan on watching your VOR training video this week. Learning how to properly navigate VOR's is an essential training when learning how to fly, so definitely want to learn. Yes, I think it would be awesome to see more steam gauge flying for sure.

Awesome! You said 20 subscribers in September 2020 ... well in February 2021 you have near 3,000 subscribers! Way to go man - gaining about 600 per month! So, I am not used to the SimBrief so maybe you can talk more on that (you may have already by now) - also, I do use approach charts for reference, but you really talked some great points here - more information videos on how to use those like you did here - more examples perhaps. @@TheSimPilot I have tried out the flight plan, how do I add in Routes that are outside of SID and STAR? There are more routes in between, and also how do I add in routes that are not included in the GPS menu option?
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
@@drapaul10 Hi, you should be able to enter any waypoint as you would enter the ones in the tutorial. G1000 does not know or care about the flight plan you have. If there are waypoints that you have but you can't find in the sim that's due to navdata in the sim. It's not quite complete at the moment. If it's a GPS coordinate right now it's not possible with MSFS2020 G1000.

15:47 is where "how to enter your flight plan" actually starts. at 23:50 you mixed up ILS and RNAV. ILS is a based on ground radio stations and RNAV is using GPS. ILS has a higher precision because it uses antennas on the runway.

I know I need to start adding time stamps again. It's easier for the viewers. I know the difference between ILS and RNAV it's just a mixup in the video.

If you are filing at IFR flight plan then you do not add the 500 foot separation. You would file at 5000 or 7000 because it is IFR. Regardless what you file if you are using, ATC will either approve or assign a different altitude even if it is different from the east west rule.

This is an excellent tutorial : Do you always have to get one of those charts to verify the simbrief data against ?
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily need to verify simbrief data for flight simulation but it's good to have charts to make it more realistic and close to talk world operations.

Great videos, Tutorials! These videos are, for me, how to use a cessna and its Garmin, and I learn English Languages. I read your KZfaq Description, and I would like to know, Where are you from? You wrote, to travell to USA.

Hi Sim Pilot ....Where did you get the IFR plates SIDS STARS Are they free anywhere ?.... excellant video by the way 😃

Skyvector has them for the US and it's free. Also chartfox is a service for VATSIM members which is also free. I'm using Navigraph and it's a paid subscription for charts and navigational data.

Thank you for the vids. Can I save the flight plan within the G1000 or somewhere else? I have done the plan twice from your vid and while I am happy for the practice it would be good if it could be saved some how.

Hi Michael, unfortunately G1000 in MSFS2020 does not have the save function yet. You can try to save the flight from the ESC menu where it gives you an option. I haven't tested it myself and I have a suspicion that it might not save the flight plan. I'll try it tonight and let you know.

Thank you very much, your videos are awesome! Here is my question: How do you save (and reload) your FLP you diligently created in episode 3 with all the details? This question seems to be odd, because of course you have the option to save flight (*.flt) and flightplan (*.pln). Which I did, by the way (a couple of times...). But when reloading the previously saved flt-file (e.g. EDLP-EDDV.flt) fs2020 chrashes and on alternately reloading the pln-file (e.g. EDLP-EDDV.pln) the mfd shows only a basic / default flightplan (EDLP-EDDV) without SID and STAR and the waypoint heights, which I created passionately following your instructions in episode 3. - I checked the comments to see if this topic has already been covered but obviously I am the only one having this problem. - May be I am doing something wrong or stupid here. I would be grateful if you or anyone could help me...! Thank you and keep up with your videos! Greetings from Germany.

Are you aware of a program called SimBrief Downloader? It will directly (sort of) download a SimBrief flight plan into MS FS2020. It saves all the typing it in the extremely slow way. SimBrief Downloader is very handy to use and it's free.

Great instructional. But please use a more visible cursor. I have glaucoma & trying to track a small straight line across a complex display is made quite difficult by the standard text cursor. Thx

Hello, i'm watching your videos with great interest, but i am wondering how you are downloading the arrival and departure charts, and what if you cant find the SID: Standard Instrument Departures/Arrival codes in the plane, when you try to plot the codes in to the flight plan.
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
I am using a paid subscription service called Navigraph. It installs the nav data to the sim as well as provides charts service. I don't recall not finding the SID after starting to use Navigraph. The default nav data had these kind of problems and looks like they are still not fixed.

Realy nice turorial! I am not a pro! But are u sure that rnav is non gps altitude , and ils is gps method? As long as i know ILS is beacon next to the runway in witch u use its frequency and morse code, while RNAV actualy uses preinstalled gpa map, waypoint and procedures with preselected heights which give the gps abilyty to descent, even its really close to the ILS the RNAV is non precisional aprouch
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not either but as far as I know RNAV gives a glide Path based on GPS coordinates. It has two different types GNSS and RNP and the difference is the required precision. From what you've mentioned I think you're correct and I know in that video I think I said it does not give you a vertical profile. What I was trying to say was it does not give you a vertical profile like ILS but a constant angle path into the RW from the IAF. I think that's what created the confusion. Thanks for the explanation though!
