Hello everyone, this is the 5.1th episode of the tutorial series, we're going to take a look at flight planning using Sky Vector and what it has to offer to us. Remember this tutorial is beginner level and I won't be diving into deep details. Sky Vector has too much information that can be overwhelming for a beginner flight simmer, therefore I'll stick to the bare bones. Enjoy!

This is brilliant. Have been working thru your tutorials and they are so good. This SkyVector one opens up the flightsim world to a whole new level of immersion . Microsoft/Asobo should show your tutorials as recommended viewing !

Wow! I actually decided stop looking at Skyvector because it was daunting to look at and I was going crazy trying to figure it out. I'm so glad I noticed this video and after watching I can look at it and it all makes sense now because of you so, many thanks for taking the time for these vids. I haved subbed and will be watching many more! /cheers!!! Oh, is there a European alternative to Skyvector that has the charts and all for Europe?
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the very nice comment and the sub! Only European alternative U know is chartfox. It's a VATSIM member services but membership is free and it has pretty much all European charts. If you don't want to become a VATSIM member try SI toolkit pro it has chartfox access without membership.

The coloured pins indicate VFR flying conditions and not chart availability as you stated around 3:30 and are only applicable if you are using real time weather in your sim. Green is full VFR conditions, blue is marginal VFR conditions and red is IFR only. If you look closely at them you will see various levels of white inside in a pie chart style. This is a percentage indication from (in the case of green pins) from full to marginal VFR conditions. The way to use this is if your departure and destination airports have green pins then both are accepting VFR landings and departures. If one of them is blue then that airport may have restrictions on VFR landings and departures but VFR is possible with caution. Red pins indicate the airport is only accepting IFR flights in and out.

Is there a standard speed being used to calculate time displayed between waypoints when planning vertical mapping? First time sim user and absolutely love your videos. Thanks for making them.
@TheSimPilot

It's using the ground speed to calculate the time

Another useful video, very interesting and educational. Would be great to know how to plan with and use the airways. So many questions, like can one join or leave an airway at any point or do defined procedures exist for their use - like departure/approach procedures for airports? I guess we might get to learn about that when you start covering higher altitude and longer flights with higher end aircraft? Citation flight from EGKK to LEBL... :)
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know only thing that you need to follow is the departure (SID), arrival (STAR) and Approach as far as IFR goes. When it comes to Airways, choosing lo-altitude ones below 18000 ft and hi-altitude ones above 18000 is the only rule I know of along with Odd thousands +500 altitude when travelling east and even thousand +500 ft when travelling west from where you are.
@justinfielding
@justinfielding 3 жыл бұрын
The Sim Pilot so an IFR flight must follow these airways? One cannot just plot their own path cross country picking random VOR bearings to follow in order to reach the destination as we seemed to do in the previous videos?
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
@@justinfielding No there are places where there are no airways and you fly direct from one nav aid to another whether it's a VOR station or GPS nav fix. Think about this like taking a short cut to get to the next highway towards your destination when driving. It is possible and common, commercial flights on the other hand use airways more often so that in any controlled airspace ATC knows who is travelling where. ATC can also ask you to follow a different path according to the current circumstances of the airspace they are controlling. You're clearly not bound to the airways but bound to the IFR rules of that airspace you're travelling in/through and they do change from location to location, region to region or country to country.
@justinfielding
@justinfielding 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSimPilot I wondered why bother to go out of your way to follow an airway if you can just fly direct from the end of your SID to the start of the STAR but I guess there is still a lot left to learn. Out of interest, do you fly in the real world or only in the sim?
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
@@justinfielding Only in the sim, not a real life pilot but I have close family who are pilots and discuss with them when I don't understand something.

Hi Sim Pilot. Very good tutorials! One question where do you get your charts from in Europe. SkyVector only have charts for USA! I'm from Sweden and like to plan for SID and STAR. Thanks for your help!
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kent, for Europe I use my Navigraph subscription most of the time but if you are a VATSIM user their free chart service Chart Fox is also good. Other than these two Google is your only option to search for the ICAO code. Thanks for your generous comment!

Hello, could you please explain how to use the SID and STAR charts in order to programm G1000 for approach and procedures? TIA!
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
I sure can, if I'm not mistaken there's some information about that in EP#3 where I go through the charts for departure and approach. Not sure if you have seen the full video. I can also make s tutorial on how to read the charts if that's what you wanted.
@NorbertoPadin

@@TheSimPilot thanks for your prompt response! I'll double check EP#3! I also having issues understanding which runaway is going to be used at my destination airport when they do not provide METAR information and the MS tower changes your approach when you are in final. Maybe I can fly without radio coms as you do in your videos, and that is why I'd like to take advantage of the charts if I have to change my approach. Take care and continue with your videos!
@TheSimPilot
@TheSimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
@Norberto Padin In game ATC is not functioning quite well at the moment, but if you use Simbrief for planning the flight, it takes weather into account. Therefore it usually assigns the correct runway for approach, then you can use Skyvector for charts. This is how I plan my route. Hopefully it will make more sense when we move to more advanced aircraft.
