Microsoft in the mid-2000s just couldn't get things right. While Xbox 360 was doing well, Windows Vista was a spectacular disaster and the launch of the iPhone and Google Android ultimately pushed Microsoft and the Windows Phone operating system out of the market. But a few years before that there was Zune: a portable MP3 player brave enough to take on the iPod. Did it work? Clearly not... Why, however, was Microsoft's music player such a failure and why did it cost them over a billion dollars in losses?

Major correction: music bought on the iTunes music store could be played on more than just the iPod. You could (and I did a lot!) burn them to CD and play them in any CD player. I don’t understand why this option was completely forgotten about. It was a very common thing to do at the time.

MS consumer product marketing at that time was always atrocious and confusing, from advertising to packaging. Yet they had one stellar success, the XBox. At the time nobody thought they could pull it off vs Sony, but look where it is today. What was different about the development and marketing of XBox? Two things I can think of right off the bat was that 1) MS spread a lot of money around among game developers to make sure Xbox had sufficient titles at launch (including their outright purchase of Mac game developer Bungie, giving them an exclusive on Halo), and 2) Xbox was basically walled off from the company, allowing it to do its own thing (much like how the Mac was initially developed at Apple).

Wow, I never knew that the Metro interface was that old. I had a Windows phone like just 2 years ago (bought it in 2016, I know I know, too late), and at the time when I bought it it was still on Windows 8.1 Mobile, which had the exact same aesthetic to it as the Zune HD. It got upgraded to Win10 Mobile at some point, but conveniently you could roll-back to 8.1 whenever you pleased by doing a factory reset. And I did it when I gave the phone to my father to make it more simple (he never had a smartphone prior to that one so I didn't want to overwhelm him). And yes, that's a very pleasant and uncluttered interface. Shame that Windows Phones never took off.

Later Zune models even had a radio feature that would read the RDS data from FM stations and would provide links to purchase songs you hear on the radio... granted if your favorite station has RDS data in their signal. Not every station has RDS, especially smaller independent community stations or in rural areas. As for HD Radio, it could make FM radio more appealing to many if stations dropped analog signals completely. That would greatly increase digital bandwidth and in turn, audio quality.

It was a pretty sweet deal while it lasted. They eventually rolled it into the "Xbox Music Pass" and later, Groove. We who had the original Pass were grandfathered in with the "10 free mp3s a month" deal for several years, but eventually they forced everyone into the $10-for-only-streaming" deal with Groove. I wasn't interested in streaming (for practical reasons), so I ended my subscription then. Just a few months later, Groove was killed off as a subscription service, with MS promoting Spotify in its stead.

I had a Zune 80GB. It was awesome. I left it in my car glove compartment on a cloudy day under a tree for like 4 hours - like I did everyday for like a year. Then it didn't turn back on. I live in the Philippines and support is nonexistent or expensive. Same thing happened as this video's Zune Flash. I bought an aftermarket battery, had an electronics repair guy replace the battery. Didn't turn on. So my zune officially died then. That product was the product that swore me off from buying niche, rare, little no support devices. I hate buying mainstream, but sometimes you just have to get something common but reliable.

I remember when the Zune came out. I was working at office depot, and we actually sold them. To be honest, they were really good mp3 players and had some pretty sweet features (one of which was a built in fm radio, which you had to buy an overpriced add-on for an ipod...). There was also a demo music sharing feature that let you send a song from your Zune to someone else's for something like 3 days or a week, I can't remember which. Also, the Ipod only made it big because Microsoft allowed Itunes on Windows. This opened the market up for apple's ipod. If they hadn't and instead had released the zune, apple may not be the same company it is today.

I think the avgn fans and zune owners have a pretty big crossover.

The first MP3 player that I remember having was a 256mb San Disk, followed by a 512mb, then I finally jumped on the bandwagon circa 2007 and bought a blue iPod mini. I remember seeing a classmate’s Zune in high school. I thought it was really cool.

I loved my Zune HD, it really is a shame they failed. Imagine a Zune smartphone of today's standards but with one of those same kick-ass DACs they used to have. Fuck, I need a change of pants now...

I had a Zune. It did not have a single-song repeat function. Unbelievable! I don't know if they ever added it, but I didn't stick around long enough to find out.
