I did a battery, screen, and keyboard replacement all in one shot. Your video gave me the confidence to persevere though this truly harrowing experience! From peeling the backing off the keyboard to busting out all the keys including the rivets, holy moly that was tense! I actually couldn't believe it started right up after the procedure with everything working perfectly. I'm amazed! Thanks for the help!

Hey there Binh, I got my replacement keyboard from iFixit, and being almost 70 years old, I thought I may have lost my touch when it comes to the repair of my Macbook. The only issue I had was handling the many T3 screws, as my eyesight is not what it used to be. But I made up a sticky-board and placed everything in a similar layout to my Macbook.....there were no spare parts at the end :/-) Everything went really smoothly, despite the "wrecking moment" for the keyboard and rivets feels just wrong. Btw, I used a large paper envelope closed between the screen and the bottom section for protection of the screen. I also used your first tool for removing the keyboard rivets (the end cutters) that worked a treat. Very good guide, thank you, that helped me to cross check connections on reassembly. I'll drop you a line on your e-Mail so that I can make a donation to your cause. Thanks again mate, the keyboard is 100% functional! Regards, David

The sad reality is, although these are gorgeous laptops the keyboards are the most important and most faliure-prone part. Mine was so bad I couldn't even thank you for this tutorial before replacing it. Somehow managed todo it without wrecking the entire machine and at the end of all of it have a goregous looking machine again that only needs a right fan as that somehow broke druing the process but all still seems to run cool and fine. I know it's bound to fail again in a few years so instead of even screwing it down I just removed everything and used tape and while it is a bit mushy is just as fast to type on and still feels great, even with a bit more travel now it's a bit more mushy. Great video and thanks for the tutorial on such a handicapped machine.

Great job with this keyboard replacement. I've seen some where the replace the rivets with self tapping pentalobes (not sure what size) in the rivet holes. Have you heard about this method? Thanks for your help with this great video.

Great video, thanks for your efforts. I would suggest that there should be a hard plastic or rubber sheet inserted between the keyboard and the screen when working with the screen closed. This would mitigate against a tool slip when the removed keys leave gaps. Just an idea......

First, thanks for making this. It was awesome and helped me replace my keyboard. Unfortunately I broke the keyboard cable (of all cables…) and have to wait a couple of days for a new cable. Reassembled and everything worked. Luckily I have an external keyboard for now. So I’ll be doing it again in 2 days…

Suggestion for any sadomasochists who are actually going to try this. Use a cuticle cutter / manicure nipper to pull out the rivets. They have a fine tapered edge which will let you get a good 'bite' on the bottom of the rivet, and a precise point to easily get the rivets that are next to the battery case.

When I started this, I thought about using the cutters. But I used a pencil grinder with a very small ball double cut carbide on it. And that is the best way to do this job. When you start with the grinding bit On a pencil grinder. It works better if it's a double cut carbide. When the ball. Start to cut into the top of the rivet head and it starts grinding in. It will pop off when it gets to the right depth. You will need to be careful around the ribbon cables. You may have to have someone help you. By holding them up out of the way while you grind under anything you can do it. It's still worse better. Also on the side where the frame is and on the back side. Where the hinges are the batteries. You have to get really close to the frame. Just be careful and don't find end of the frame. If anyone else does it this way? Let me know what you think if somebody else finds a better way. Definitely let us know.

One more question if you don't mind, do these replacement keyboards have a build in backlight? It seems there are two different types on ebay one with backlight and another one without, can I reuse the original keyboard's backlight? Any idea?
@ItsBinhRepaired
@ItsBinhRepaired 7 ай бұрын
The backlight is the plastic layer on top. If you're able to safely remove the old one, you can put it on the one that doesn't have backlight.

Thanks you very much for all details in your video as you as real person you didn't hide anything as I saw to many of them they go very speedy without explanations after my tea with sugar was very bad I open it twice but without removing my keyboard the only the key ($/4) not working then it does work fine, but now I have my computer turn off then start by itself again then does again non stop if I open it the next day does work ok then after 2 to 3 hours does it again it look like it is overheating even I just open it again I clean the fans were clog had some dusts. I toke it after couples days from the liquid accident to apple but they were refuse to do anything after I told them I had the accident, they told me wouldn't repair any computer with liquid accident only they said they would sell me another Mac-book pro. I don't know what to do with it?

Hi, nice video! I did replace the keyboard but when reassembled it won’t turn on again. When I power it I hear the trackpad clicking but fans are not running and display is not working. I have tried resetting the SMC and all that but still nothing. Should I take it apart again ? Could it be a loose connection at the display and fan connectors? Many thanks

That's usually a temperature sensor not connected. I think the machine fails safe so if it can't get a temperature reading it'll run the fans all the time
