In this video, we put a custom bbs02 52v mid drive ebike to battle with a dual motor mope style ebike, the Meelod dk300 max. Let's see who does better, and later talk about the pro's and con's of each bike.

The dual hub drive bikes are getting so much cheaper that you could buy another battery. I wish there were more to try when I was buying. I also worry about the front tire sliding out on sandy/dirty/gravel surfaces.

yeah they are such a good price nowadays. I think the dual motor bikes are best in a straight line, and around corners only use the rear motor. That's what I do with my custom build that has two throttles.

Hilly neighborhoods is where the dual motor layout shines the most. I have a dual motor ebike (ariel rider grizzly) and easily commute hilly city every day.

Dual hub is only used when needed.. Not so much wattage used on rear wheel only. And many dual hub bikes have much larger battery capacity than typical mid drives. Let's say we go on a 50 mile ride at 30 mph. Mid drive guy is gonna have to pedal his ass off and hub guy can just throttle about on his 1,000 to 2,000 wh battery reserves. Not many mid drives are at 1,000 wh of capacity or more.

Yeah you're right I haven't seen many mid drive with big batteries. Hopefully that trend changes. I'll be putting a 20ah on mine when I build it

I just got a 25 AH battery for my CSC MT1000 mid drive fat tire bike. I picked this bike for the 1000 W bafang motor and the type 2 sticker. It is speed controlled to 20mph so it almost fits specs for Washington trails. The dual motors add up to way over the 1HP standard for it to be a bicycle in Washington. Dual motors would be a motorcycle here.@@maximumchargeEV

The 1000W motor is 1-1/3 HP so my bike is a moped in WA but I don't think there are many extra requirements for mopeds and my bike is speed controlled to 20 mph which is what I think is needed for shared trails and sidewalks. The type 2 sticker should help in court.

Would be cool to throw a mid-drive bike with a front hub motor installed into the test, like a hybrid awd. Best of both worlds.

Realistically how difficult would it be to add bbshd mid drive to an already existing dual hub ebike? It’s single speed hunting bike. Add separate throttle, battery for hills?

pretty easy as long as you have space to mount the battery.

@@maximumchargeEV I’d just mount the mid drive battery on the bike’s rear rack. Anytime I haul with it much I use a cart. So keep it single speed? Has a 36 tooth chain ring

@@aeestep77 I wouldn't keep it single speed since one of the benefits of a mid drive is that you can use the bikes gearing with the motor. If you do keep it single speed, make sure that rear gear is larger so at least you can get super low end torque mid drives are good for.

@@maximumchargeEV I could care less about speed. I need hill climbing torque. Check out face off e-bikes and look at the specs of their single speeds that they claim can out climb bikes with 9 speed derailers. I gotta figure out what size rear cog I have. The chainring is a 36

On the trails, once you add the human element it's tough for the mid drives to keep up with the geared hubs, they're so forgiving. Mine will get up just about anything in pedal assist two with a little bit of help.

@@maximumchargeEV DIY, it's a mongoose Juneu with a Mozo Fork, I have the 1000w bafang hub with 30amp controller, 52v. Peak is around 1550w. I also have a Speedread 26in fat tire bike, that thing is a crazy climber too, total surprise didn't expected it, supposed to be a 500w, one of the cheapest bikes on Amazon from back in the day, put peaks at 1040w. Not as fast as the bafang with a top speed of only 26, but on the trails they're equal. .The 500w feels like it has a slightly bigger gear reduction then the thousand watt Bafang.

@@maximumchargeEVI have to build a mid drive to, I ride on some pretty wild trails, the only other e bikes I ever see are the specialized, and treks, I always wondered if a bafang mid drive could handle the beatings on the trails that the hub can do all day long for days, or is the bicycles drivetrain going to crumble relatively quickly, I've blown hubs without a motor.

The mid-drive bike looks like it has it's power limited. I guess I will have to unlock my BikTrix Juggernaut 26" BBSHD Fatbike and make a speed run with it. Here is a link doing a very steep railroad pedestrian bridge with the power limited to 25mph. I converted the bike to a 69er meaning have a 2.2 29" inch wheel up front and a 26" rear fat. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqiUaLx_zbqoZGQ.html

Hmm, not sure. I saw the display peaking at around 1200 watts which is about 23 amps, just below the limit of the bbs02.
