In this tutorial about the topic of Mid-Tempo Double Bass I explain how everyone can learn how to play at tempos between 130 and 170 BPM.
The main takeaway here is that everyone can learn how to play at those (sometimes frustrating) mid-tempos.
If you are stuck at those mid-tempos and want me to review your videos and give you detailed feedback, then join our online coaching platform: www.drumtechni...

Really high quality stuff. Those mid tempos are very hard to develop, and very underestimated by non-drummer musicians.

This is so helpful ! I feel like I’m in school. I try to apply all the techniques, but fall short. I play six nights a week and still feel like I hit a wall. I studied privately with a well known teacher from Berkeley in Boston. Along with a some incredible players / teachers in Boston. I took a couple of lessons with Derek Roddy after moving to Miami. But playing so much for work seems to have sucked my inspiration from me, as well as drive and discipline. I’ve been blessed with many years of great gigs and travel. Now I need a push to get over this new wall. I really would like to get back to studying and working with a good teacher. I really appreciate watching your vid. Thank you so much. I’m working on the next step.. honestly.. I just want to make sure I’m honest with my self and ready to commit. I’ve always struggled with even mid tempo double bass, and endurance. Any push or motivational input would be appreciated !

Thank you a lot for this video. For me, the main message is: keep it simple. For middle tempo double bass you only need or the flat foot or the anckle motion technique. From now on I will study focusing on this two techniques for two or three months.

Two questions: 1. Would you advise the regular rock drummer, who just wants to play double bass without triggers up to 150 bpm to stick with whole leg or flat foot as a basic technique? 2. Do you differentiate between flat foot and ankle technique for didactic purposes? I ask, because my observation is that a lot of players seem to move the whole leg WITH a snap of the ankle. The faster they move the more the motion of the leg shrinks whereas the motion of the ankle gets more pronounced. Thanks for taking the time to read and maybe answering!

i am doing bass drum mastery right now, i don't have much time, and can barely get on my kit, but i am doing this as much as possible, i was having issues with trying to make sure my hip didn't move while doing the ankle motions, also i have the problem with my right foot being able do everything and my left foot being slow lol, but i am doing this shit everyday. powering through.
@johnknight9150
@johnknight9150 4 жыл бұрын
I would also suggest that using flatfoot on one leg and ankle technique on the other will help you to maintain balance. I have often used this combination myself, but I _can't_ really play without (two per-side) swivel, so I swivel when I do it too! :-P

Hey man......this month I kind of discovered this ankle techniek which works perfect for fast tempos.....and without to much effort....I still need to practice more, since sometimes both feet kind of work in unisonic instead of double strokes....that´s why it´s kind still hard for me to make totally well

I'm stuck around 140-160 with my current technique and I'm able to play around 180 with the ankle technique(just started practicing it this week) but I'm not using it musically. I'm just sitting around playing the ankle technique. My end goal is to play fast and to be able to control each note which I can't do yet. Will that come with time?

I am left handed but I play on a right handed set up. Growing up playing other people’s drums because I didn’t have a kit is how it happened. I am right foot dominant and play the high hat open. What’s your thoughts on that? I’m 46 and feel it’s too late to retrain myself now that I have a kit. Is that incredibly uncommon?

basically, he said you need to practice 2 techniques..... the flat foot, and the ankle technique. its only two muscle groups so don't complicate it with other techniques such as the swivel.

It’s weird, I personally find that the faster = the harder. When I started I was only able to play 130bpm, now I can play up to 180 bpm, and for me it’s all linear: slower = easier, faster = harder. And just recently I got into heel toe and thankfully now I’ve extended my range up to 220bpm with double strokes. But being able to play over 200bpm right from the start with single strokes? And not being able to play 150? I don’t get it :)

Playing fast double bass is a lot harder than it seems. You have different techniques (leg, leg-ankle and ankle), different feet (strong rightfoot, weak leftfoot), certain pedal settings... Lack of stability, upper leg muscles getting tired when you have to lift up your feet all the time, feet twitching uncontrollably when you reach a certain speed... I have a lot of respect for drummers who can do this. I can't do it, and I've stopped trying. When there's no result after years of trying, when you start to dislike playing drums because of it, it's time to quit.
