Hatchet was one of my favorites as a kid! It’s actually one I was thinking of pulling out this year. And Restart sounds great!

You should absolutely try Restart for your older kids. There are some literature studies available for it, but we just did it as a read aloud. It's great to solidify POV.

Hi there, I am brand new to homeschooling my 6th grade son! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your recommendations, flip throughs and resources!! My son and I started Kingdom's Dawn because another homeschool mom recommended it... and he LOVES it! It is a good story and not too long so it makes for a fun read aloud. We checked it out from the library and now he wants to get the complete series- 6 books I believe. I am going to check out the books you mentioned as well and see if I can get most from the library or half price books or better yet- a thrift store. I am trying to budget but it is SO hard when I want it all! SO FUN. I appreciate your ideas and sharing them with us. I also like to see what others comment on and books they enjoy.

Welcome! I'm so glad the videos are helpful! And, thanks for letting me know that your son likes Kingdom's Dawn. We're looking forward to reading it. So glad your library is a good resource for you. I wish we lived closer to a great library....it would definitely help with the budget 😉. Glad we can be 6th grade mommas together!

I love how excited you get about experiencing these books with your daughter. I love reading with my boys as well. Do you do the reading or do you and your daughter take turn reading to each other? Thanks so much for sharing your homeschool journey.

Thank you so much! What a great question! I read when the book is above her reading level or when there are voices (her request on this one). We take turns on some of them. If we are going to be in the car a lot, then we definitely take turns because she reads while I'm driving. I do try to make it a mixture. She enjoys being read to and I am going to read to her for as long as possible! :) So glad that you enjoy reading with your boys. What are your favorite books?

I stopped at our library's book sale today and found Restart by Gordon Korman for $0.50 and grabbed it, per your recommendation. My kids are only 4 and 6, but for $0.50, I can keep it on my shelf for a few years.

Yeah! As you know, we love that book. My daughter has actually asked if we could do it as a repeat read aloud. We may read it again this summer. Definitely save it for when your kids are older. Hope you love it, too!

Thank you for all your suggestions! I’m a brand new homeschooling mom. My daughter is also in the 6th grade. How do you decide which books to add a study along with it? My daughter is reading 2 of the books you mentioned because they are included in her history curriculum.

Welcome to homeschooling! Glad you found my channel. There are a number of factors that I look at for adding a study....are the studies from someplace I trust (like Moving Beyond the Page), when are we going to be reading it and does the workload make sense at that time, cost of the study, and do the activities with the study look like ones that my daughter will enjoy. Which history curriculum are you using? We love history!
