“I was definitely raised to be a Jewish leader of some kind.”
With college campuses all over the US gripped by intense battles around free speech, antisemitism and Palestinian rights - the voices of young Jewish Americans have led the way.
One of the boldest and most prominent voices is that of Simone Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was raised in a conservative Zionist household, taught to idolise and support Israel as the highest aspiration of all young Jewish Americans like her.
But as she got older, she began to question whether there was another side to Israel she was being sheltered from - and when she sought answers, she was shocked at what she discovered.
Prompted by conversations with Palestinians under occupation and Jewish activists, she went home and began to organise in an attempt to stop her government’s military support for Israel, and as she puts it, “live out the values of justice I was raised on”.
On the frontlines of protests in campuses and halls of power, she suddenly found herself a target of accusations by pro-Israeli groups, who now called her “antisemitic” and threatening her online.
After October 7, she became more determined than ever to challenge the beliefs in her community about Israel, and the reluctance by many to see the horrific reality of what’s happening in Gaza.
This week on The Big Picture, we sit down with Simone Zimmerman to talk about her story, which has been documented in a provocative new documentary called ‘Israelism’, and whether we’re witnessing a turning point in how young Jewish-Americans see Israel, and how young Americans see their government’s support for the occupation.
Check out the trailer for Israelism here: • ISRAELISM | Official T...

Bravo Simone!!! I'm a 66 year old Jewish American male who was indoctrinated since I was 5 with the same mythical stories you and some others of your generation speak of and now see through. 1) We are the "Chosen People". We're special. 2) Conflating antisemitism with anti Zionism. 3) We Jews must be perpetually afraid. VERY, very afraid because we are always the persecuted victim. Hence, the need for Israel as safe haven. 4) Conflating the Jewish diaspora experience with the Israeli experience. Thusly, we need to espouse unconditional support for the racist, ethno, apartheid state who has oppressed millions of Palestinians since the Nakba in 1948. I cannot summon the words to express my anger, revulsion, and utter disgust with the Israeli regime and their partners the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, and others in the genocide / ethnic cleansing operation featuring too many crimes against humanity to list here. To that I say.... NOT IN MY NAME!!! Lastly, I am actually afraid that we are experiencing in real time the utter breakdown of the world wide social order that has especially benefited the wealthy industrialized countries since the end of World War 2.

@@sarooshmansoor459 I can answer that. The problem is that we won't only get rid of all the evil that the current world order creates, we will also lose all the good that it creates. Burning the world down to improve it is actually a very bad idea. The people who will suffer most in the collapse will be the people at the bottom. The west is especially benefited, but not exclusively, Hopefully we won't see a total collapse but I would like America to return to our borders and stop meddling in other countries.

Once upon a time in Moorish Andalusia before the sack of Toledo Jews Muslims and Christians all lived together in great prosperity due to trade with the Byzantine Empire and the known world. In that dark unwashed time Toledo was bright anomaly in Europe it had libraries and scholarship running water public gardens functional sewers eating utensils, and most of all tolerance. There was intermarrying and vigorous intellectual freedom. When the Barbarian El Cid sacked Toledo he wrote the Pope that they found a bunch of libraries should we burn them? So the Pope's scholars working with Islamic Scholars spent the rest of their lives translating Aristotle and many other lost treasures from Arabic into Latin. That's why so much classical antiquity remains with us today. Not to mention Algebra, the number zero, dessert, dressing for dinner, etcetera.

Jewish people, as a whole, were a lot more secular in the 1960s in the West. After the horrors of WWII, a strong Jewish identity developed, but with less religiousity in the diaspora. Decades of narrative shifting and huge amounts of cash spent by Israel and the American Pro-Israel lobby plus complicity by western governments, shifted that narrative to a more nationalistic, zionistic attitude. A good example is a Jewish friend of mine who was raised in a liberal, reformed Jewish family but became much more Orthodox than his family and also moved to Israel.

_"Authoritarian, fascist movements are gaining strength throughout the world and endanger the freedom of all of us."_ Yes and No. We do see fascist movements here and there, in Ukraine, Israel, and other local areas, but they are not really gaining strength. They rise to the surface and they are exposed and quickly rejected. Israel is not gaining power, it is quickly becoming totally isolated. And soon it will even lose its influence in the US. And it will find itself more or less entirely alone with no friends and lots of enemies. Time for those in Judea to flee into the wilderness. Jesus didn't give that warning to condemn the good Jews. It's not a genocide, FFS. The only attempted genocide was on Oct. 7. hamas would have liked to complete its genocide attempt, but couldn't. Israel has the means to genocide i.e. wipe out Gaza/Palestinians, but doesn't. You don't know what you're talking about.

How sick Forget the ones putting women and children in mortal danger? Forget the one that went into the hospital to fire rpg and grenades and shoot at the idf? Forget the ones that follows the innocent civilians into the sir himanitarian zones and launch missiles into israel? Forget about the ones diverting their aid? Forget about the ones who took the hostages into the tunnels in Gaza and brought the idf after them?? Forget about the ones who used schools and homes as launch pads and supply for electricity and cables and air into the tunnels storing missiles sent into israel? Forget about hamas who always always chooses to fight from denseley populated places using rpg? Forget hamas who murdered 1200 innocent Jews Forget hamas who forced many Palestinians to remain in their homes and not move after recovering warnings to leave? Forget hamas who started firing at the idf at the arrival of the food trucks?? Forget hamas who is committing genocide on both the Jews and on its people ?? Forget hamas ! It’s convenient for you to forget hamas Because you must blame israel and the idf for stats not proven by anyone not even hamas ? Hamas has claimed it has no official documented records of over 12,000 of their acclaimed killed women and children ? We should forget that also? Forget hamas is convenient for those who seek to sell hate on zionists ! The carnage was made possible thanks to hamas and all it has done since it came to power to ensure that it’s people women and children replaced them in any war they were ever going to be engaged in by their deliberate actions!!! Some of my Jewish friends had those values before October 7 and now they are anti-Palestinian.. I still want to be friends with them, but we do not talk about that subject or else. I'm sure our friendship would fall apart. I don't really know what to make of it. What's more dangerous is the normalisation of all this. During the apartheid era in South Africa within the white community, there were individuals who opposed the apartheid regime and its narrative of racial superiority. These dissenting voices faced various challenges and consequences for their opposition. White South Africans who spoke out against apartheid often faced ostracism from their own community. They were labeled as traitors or sympathizers with the black majority, leading to social isolation and sometimes even harassment. Those who openly opposed apartheid risked facing legal repercussions, including arrest, detention without trial, and even torture. The apartheid government used harsh laws to suppress dissent, and white activists were not exempt from these measures. Speaking out against apartheid often meant challenging the privileges that came with being white in South Africa. Some individuals faced economic repercussions, such as losing their jobs or being denied opportunities for advancement. Many white South Africans who opposed apartheid faced pressure from their families and peers to conform to the prevailing racist ideology. This could strain relationships and lead to personal conflicts within families and social circles. Some white anti-apartheid activists chose to leave South Africa rather than continue to live under the oppressive regime. They sought refuge in other countries where they could continue their activism without fear of persecution. Despite the risks, some white South Africans actively collaborated with black activists and organizations in the struggle against apartheid. They formed alliances and worked together to challenge the discriminatory policies of the government. Within the white community, there were also internal struggles and divisions over the issue of apartheid. While some supported the regime's policies, others questioned its morality and effectiveness, leading to debates and conflicts within white society. Overall, white South Africans who opposed apartheid faced significant challenges and risks, but their activism played a crucial role in the eventual dismantling of the apartheid system and the establishment of a democratic South Africa. The complexity of activism against war involves grappling with ethical dilemmas and nuanced understanding of societal dynamics. While it's crucial to oppose violence and prevent the suffering of innocent people, navigating the ideologies and motivations behind conflicts can be challenging. Activists often strive to promote peace while also addressing underlying issues such as oppressive ideologies or systems contributing to conflict. It's a balancing act between immediate humanitarian concerns and the broader goals of promoting justice and stability. Ultimately, the worth of activism against war lies in its potential to foster dialogue, raise awareness, and advocate for positive change, even in the face of complex societal realities.

She’s not brainwashed by Hasbara like Noa Tishby for example. Look up Hasbara and realize how powerful it used to be. We’re seeing it crack. And now the voices of reasonable and kind Jewish people are coming through. The hasbara playbook is a step by step talking program for controlling the narrative. But it’s not working in the Information Age. Hasbara is failing. And this good. Jewishness is goodness and doesn’t need to control the way Hasbara pushes to control. Look up the word if you don’t know it.

The "Awakening," a moment when the whole truth with its sel-realization finally bloom and to move forward and change for the better. Thank you, Simone Zimmerman for sharing everything truthful from being a fanatical jew defending "ANTI-SEMITISM🇮🇱😡🗡️⚔️🚀💣💥" to becoming defender of today's most oppressed Palestinian people.⚖️🇵🇸🤗💖🏞️🌄🌅 More power, Simone.

Simone is such an example not only because she is so articulate and knowledgeable and has such strength of passion to do right by Palestininas but also because she had to do a full 180 on the beliefs and conditioning she was brought up with as a zionist and ina very zionist family and community and to go against that and question that instead of doubling down or going into denial is such an admirable thing to do.Many of us tend to not question such fundamental beliefs that we are brought up with and which can be uncomfortable truth to face when we begin to unpick them and realise that we may not have been taught or edcuated in the most honest or truthful ways. She is brave to have done this and to become such a force for Palestinians libaration whislt still honouring her Jewish roots and culture.

"Those things for me are deeply Jewish values" *Sweetie(meant as a term of endearment not a denigrating term), they aren't Jewish values as much as they are morally grounded values of decent people everywhere. When I go on TwitterX and see the Israelis speaking and acting like or very similar to Germans of the 1940's and 30's I'm flabbergasted at the irony of it all and completely repelled, appalled, and offended by what israel has become and as I'm learning to one degree or another has always been since 48'

Simone is just saying that, for Jews, those are their own deeply held values. Of course we don't need Jews to teach us human decency, but it's good that there's what I'd call a "grand tribe" (not a nation and not anymore even one religion) that are committed to human decency by their heritage (albeit there are apostates such as the Zionists). Yes, there are many other religions and philosophies, as examples Zoroastrianism and Jainism, that have taught kindness and decency, but none that have had as much an influence on the West as the Prophetic Tradition of Judaism. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zpqkod1jmK29noU.html

I agree. I do believe that religion is one of the easiest and most dangerous type of ideology that can pervert a human's mind. It's worth noting that all holy books contain at least few appalling bloodthirsty fanatic lines which no "moderate" religious person or believer is comfortable talking about.

This is to make clear who the bad guys really are here ! Hamas are And pro Palestine says forget. About hamas Let’s focus on israel ??? Think again !

I was a young Jew on kibbutz in 1974, thinking that Israel should stick to 1967 borders, be grateful for the granting of statehood, while others said that expanded borders were needed for defense, e.g. golan heights. Yet borders can be defended effectively if that’s your core strategy. It has secondary benefit of softening enmity. It doesn’t matter who you are,, maybe an AI, you can support valid and good policy. The current situation is the result of decades of foolishness, or lunacy as one commentator puts it.

Here’s a brave young Jewish woman who really cares, and is on the right side of history. Simone Zimmerman is a very inspiring, well-spoken, intelligent young woman who is the type of person that COULD one day be the political leader of a truly free Palestine/Israel combined “State”. Let’s call it “Israelstine”, or “Palestrael” for lack of a better name. If I were a Palestinian or Israeli, I’d vote for her. If I was 27 instead of 75 I’d be asking her out for Sushi. This podcast has me hooked now as a fan. Not because of the fantastic guest, which Simone was, but because of the way Mohamed Hassan conducted the interview. Mohamed, you are a great host. What makes you a great host one might ask? Something called, “Active Listening”. You never interrupted Simone, allowing her the time to answer your questions and comments. Major Kudos to you sir! You are a very intelligent and caring human being. Great podcast! 5 Unknown Sock Puppets out of 5. I would love to someday have a conversation with you about what I envision to be the future of our species.
