so hard to pull back from commenting before i finish watching the whole thing, but this SOS chorus is insane: she sings it organically with the vowels swinging into lower notes at the beginning and then stabilizing into the same note the longer it goes! and it's S-O-S wo S-O-S wo S-O-S wo... the moment it clicked for me was my canon hoshiyomi moment also: i got both MGO albums at the same time and threw them together in a playlist to listen back to back, at midnight... not knowing what the lyrics meant at all, until i looked them up the next night and ended up in tears, definitely life changing

"Oh, I just wonder if they randomly picked some orchestral-sounding words, and just stuck them in there" wow, less than 10 minutes in, and you're already caught suisei red-handed there lmao yea suisei admitted on a radio interview, when she wrote the lyrics she actually just googled "cool music words" and allegro was one of the result and then it ended up being implemented there multiple times, including the gun's name Also, since you said the album would've had more staying power if they utilize more of suisei's rawness and power, good news for you, the midnight grand orchestra live kinda did that lol the full live is paid, so if you don't mind you can still watch it on spwn until september 9th

About "SOS", I've heard people casting doubt about InoTaku's tendency to use the vocal part of his songs as just an instrument and that Suisei won't get to shine as much. So I totally understand your point (and love that suggestion btw, sounds fantastic!), but in my own humble opinion, letting such a talented composer like InoTaku showcase his skill, as well as being not so dependent on the vocal is totally fine, let alone such a good composition. Also considering this his strength at using EDM, it's really common to use vocal as an instrument in that genre. And honestly, while I find the vocal part of the chorus a bit repetitive as you've pointed out, I'm still amazed at the sheer power Suisei can put out with just her voice singing only one note. Like a semi-auto sniper rifle firing rapidly by a skilled user lol (check the MV!)

Nice analysis. Suisei said the chorus of SOS was just repeating the title words, but she had to add "SOS OH SOS OH SOS" in order to follow the beat without stumbling. Glad you were honest about the EP, even if I don't ultimately agree. Yes, indeed, Inoue can be very formulaic. Even Stella Stellar follows the same construction ; Voice intro - beat - chorus - breakdown - chorus with modulations. He made it clear while working with Calli on "Yona Yona Journey", repeating the formula. What is funny, since "Allegro" was my least favorite track exactly by sounding so much like Stellar Stellar. But again, being repetitive is also the nature of electronic music, even more so in EDM. When compared side by side, Grand Midnight Orchestra's first EP was actually more daring than mostly big name EDM DJs . Glad this duo is working together, even if with a few missteps. It's hard to get a 10/10 on the first album. If anything, at least they gave us 10/10 singles. Excited to see where this partnership may take us in the future.

Also this is my second comet. I had this thought for a while now for the music videos, in SOS, there were people asking for Sui's help. Towards the end of the song, there was someone who was shooting back a red projectile/comet thingy. So that spurred her and Taku to rush to the highway. Highway MV showed them rushing to help those people who were in those ships (which I think we're evacuation vessels) and the comets that they saw towards the end were actually other evacuation vessels that were burning and crashing because they were too late to help. :(

Ok just got to the last track, I think highway is definitely intended to evoke a sense of nostalgia, why I think my brain automatically connected the beginning part to Smashing Pumpkins - 1979, I had never given Taylor swift a legitimate listen until her 1989 album. Ironically seeing the parallels in this comment as I type it

As a huge fan of Suisei's voice, indeed I agree that I'd also prefer her to have more.... contribution? to the songs rather than just a "voice" to be used on the tracks. Kinda like 3:12 where it's technically InoTac's song ft. Suisei, but I feel Suisei's strengths is much better utilized there. And that said, InoTac's sound signature (formula?) is definitely recognizable on his previous works as well, so it would be... interesting how MGO would move forward, just like you said. (edit: by contribution here I meant on the vocals - I knew she write the lyrics to some of these songs) I definitely prefer Still Still Stellar more than Overture, but that's not saying that Overture is bad - I'd still much prefer the songs here compared to other songs made by/for the other hololive members, for example (though that might just be my bias). I guess I just hoped for more considering how I really love their previous works together (3:12 and then Stellar Stellar). I also seem to see the songs of the album have pretty split opinions even among the hoshiyomis. Fantastic analysis once again and hopefully we could see you more analyzing more stuff like this! Probably you could do something similar with your King analysis, but this time with Phony since quite a few hololive members (Suisei included) have covered that song as well. Might even throw in Vtubers from the other companies too if you're up to it! Edit: To add - my favorite tracks on this album would be Rat a Tat, Allegro, and Highway. If I have to explain, I'd much prefer the homogenous/less chaotic side of things, though somehow I prefer Highway more than Ryuuseigun...

I love suiseis voice but I think that it not being front an center every track is on purpose, and why this was released under a group name rather than ino & suisei. Think of her voice more or less as an instrument within a song/composition, she’s an important piece to the whole. Maynard James Keenan of tool is one of my favorite vocalists, and he’s gone on record saying something along these lines when asked why his voice is often in the background of several songs

ngl I had the dumbest smile on my face during your reaction to Tuning I had the same pleasant surprise from the vibey, repetitive, nature of Rat A Tat to the Interlude during my first listen, haha. Also great insight on the final track, Highway! I too found the structure to be "too generic" for my liking but I couldn't pinpoint the reason why. So thank you for pulling out the 2009-vibe comparison www That being said, I 100% agree that keeping an open-mind about this album is a must if you have preconceived notions/expectations from the way Stellar Stellar or 3:12 was made. iirc, there was a point where you mentioned in your previous review (of either Stellar Stellar or 3:12) that Suisei was "cockblocking" some of the compositional work of Inotac but still worked seamlessly well as Suisei was the head/center of those pieces. It's somewhat of the opposite with Overture, right? Anyways it's a joy watching these album reviews as you descend further into the vtuber-rabbit-hole. I should give the anime, Sound! Euphonium, a watch before this year ends so I can consume more rc content. ...and thank you for shouting out the hsh server. more than a handful of us love your videos!

heey fellow Tuning connoisseur. Well done for making it through another music rant haha. Your point re: Overture being almost the opposite of SS/3:12 - super interesting, and definitely agree with you there. As to which approach is 'better' - it's all in the eye (ear) of the beholder. Ohh and def watch Sound! Euphonium! I'm making my way slowly and painfully through it, but regardless of pace well worth a watch on your own also :)

Personally I found the chorus of SOS way more enjoyable than the crazy melodic modulations that came before it. I feel like the melody sounded overbearing until Suisei's "SOSOSOS..." repetition. Her voice tied everything together and organized the chaos, and the unified chaos then channeled this really powerful energy into her voice. Any variation on the lyrics or rhythm or note wouldn't be able to achieve this feeling. It resolved the tension and converted it into hype. That being said I know absolutely nothing about music or how it's composed so the best way I can describe it visually is "unstable lights being converted to a singular strong beam".
@ravenclawreacts

Valid! "unstable lights being converted to a singular strong beam" is actually a fantastic way to describe what happens when Sui kicks in with the SOSOSOSOS. She has the stamina and power to keep up those long phrases - anyone less and it would've fallen apart. Definitely grew on me. Really appreciate this insight!

finally got to watch it fully. i gotta tell you, before you went on about the music conspiracy theory to guess the key i went to check which key allegro was on beforehand, and i audibly let out a gasp when you said "sooo i'm guessing E major". that was genuinely impressive (and also super educational, i learned a lot) so hope the universe gives you your 5 bucks. it's funny how much you liked NEM. from the crossfade teaser it sounded amazing to me but the full track was not what i was expecting from it, so i didn't care much for NEM initially but it eventually grew on me (even more so after the concert), so it's interesting to see how hard it hits someone who listens to it completely blind (and also made me appreciate it more). also i probably didn't hate highway NEARLY as much as you did but it's actually a fantastic song to leave on loop in the background and vibe to. allegro, rat a tat and ryuuseigun still by far my favorites though. also the nerdy music theory details are a big part of why i look forward to these so much so please don't stop doing them. i would've never known about inotac's (likely) deliberate classical touch on the first half of the album and why it works so well and it's made me appreciate it even more, so big thanks to you

While InoTaku was the composer for these songs, and also wrote some of the lyrics, but Suisei is also behind much of the lyrics (an example she gave in a radio interview was SOS iirc. Where lyrics he wrote was basically just the "SOSOSOS" part and she wrote the rest). Edit: 39:24 since you asked what we thought about it, I actually really enjoy SOS. I think it and Rat A Tat might be my favourite songs here even thought it is probably fair to say that they are objectively not the best songs in the album. Might be my mood/when I listen to music that influences it. High energy repetitiveness is kind of more fitting when you are also doing something else compared to some more musically interesting songs I guess. Edit: 1:53:39 Yeah, MGO MVs are anime level rather than regular MV level. The concert itself (of which I only saw the free part) also looked amazing. 1:55:21 I think those are supposed to be dango? I think those comets/meteors in the Highway MV might be the spaceships falling? "How much budget went to those MVs" Dunno, but the concert stage was expensive enough that both InoTaku and Suisei were suprised by it.

at the end of the highway mv, i figured that the falling comets are actually the meteorites of the demolished pieces of the flying ships that we saw right before. i like to believe that this ties into the message of the song that things/people/places will disappear from our lives outside of our discretion and control (like letting go). i hope im wrong with that interpretation cuz watching the end of the mv is pretty damn sad if true.

After looping the standouts of Still Still Stellar through my life for the better part of a year, I'll say I'm really not feeling this album. I agree with the sentiment that Suisei was used more as an instrument than a focus, which is fair enough on its own, but I'm such a fan of Suisei's incredibly high-tension vocal flavor and tendency to run (and even hopscotch) all around the scales that these repetitive bars and notes going nowhere clash with that. Her technique in delivering them is unquestionable but what she was asked to deliver feels flat. Pop any other vocalist I didn't know in these songs and I'd be okay with chilling to them, maybe even falling asleep to them, but hearing Suisei there I find my internal monologue taking on the form of (quoting one of my favorite long-form KZfaqrs) an amphetamine-soaked circus monkey screaming "DO THE THING! DO _A_ THING! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH"

Hey, have you heard of the new one piece movie's songs? They are sung by ado, a very very talented artist that kinda relates/draws a parallel with suisei's music, I recommend u react to that album it's just great

I can easily say Im not a fan of them together. Cause it sounds like a duet with instruments and Suisei and none of them are given a chance to be the main character. It's like fighting back to back..... I just prefer song where Suisei's voice is given full support. This kinda sounds like Inutak using Suisei as a instrument or being sample for EDM.
