I’ve been a massive fan of Kate Siegel’s since 2016's Hush and that enthusiasm for her talent has only grown since the release of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and now Midnight Mass. Given how much I admire her work, it was the ultimate treat to have Siegel on Collider Ladies Night to learn more about how she got started in the industry and how her craft evolved from project to project.
Siegel plays Erin Greene in Midnight Mass. She grew up in the small, isolated community on Crockett Island, but ultimately made the move to the mainland. However, she eventually comes to decide it’s best if she returned to Crockett to build a new life for herself and for her baby-on-the-way there.
During our Collider Ladies Night conversation, Siegel shared a good deal about her earliest inspirations, her experience studying acting at Syracuse University and how she almost switched to a career in international finance before meeting the person who’d wind up changing her life on screen and off, Mike Flanagan.
Check out what she had to say about that, filming an epic jump scare in Haunting of Hill House, how Midnight Mass evolved from novel to Netflix show and more in this edition of Collider Ladies Night!

So Kate is going to be the neighborhood witch. Now tell us what you'd want YOUR Crockett Island job to be!

A miner, so that while the shit starts happening on the island I'd be deep underground with not a problem to worry about lol

I’d open a beautiful boogie store ala David in SC. I’d sell artisanal soaps and lotions and potions, and jewelry…basically all the stuff no one on the island needs… but secretly really wants. Eventually I’d add a deli or section of fine wines and cheeses, and a bakery where I’d offer fancy specialty wedding and event cakes. Soon I’d try to get the locals to make and sell things their own special wares, like hand knit gloves and scarves, quilts, yummy preserves, wood carvings. I’d try to eventually parlay the place into a tourist attraction, or at la thriving online business from ‘mainland folks’. Everyone likes nice things. It would (eventually) be a win win, after the initial ‘who’s this bougie biotc

Her character broke my heart. Especially when she was talking about what she thinks happens when we die.
@TaxemicFanatic

It shouldn't break your heart? If it was true (and it could well be) it means if you are all of it you can never actually die.

@@TaxemicFanatic Are you saying anyone who believes in the afterlife shouldn’t grieve at a funeral or when a loved one passes on
@TaxemicFanatic
@TaxemicFanatic 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickmason2345 No, I think you misunderstand the implications of her speech. I was referencing what was said on the show. She didn't mention a belief in the afterlife and neither did I. Beliefs are subjective too. But she literally says that there is no person to die for each apparent self is One: "There is no time. There is no death. Life is a dream. It’s a wish. Made again and again and again and again and again and again and on into eternity. And I am all of it. I am everything. I am all. I Am that I Am". The body ceases to exist but there is no entity that posseses the body. It is One and all. You cannot put a finger on the difference between you and I. Self implies other, life implies death (or death implies life). All is One and it goes together. But yes I agree it is quite natural and nessacary to grieve when the body dies. If you're still curious there are some great videos on here discussing Non-Duality far better than I possibly could.

@@TaxemicFanaticwhat about the part when she says her daughter (the miscarriage) will be named by her grandfather or grandparents (can’t remember exactly lol) and would be waiting for her? Where would she be implying her daughter and family is waiting?
@TaxemicFanatic
@TaxemicFanatic 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickmason2345 "You, me and my little girl, and my mother and my father, everyone’s who’s ever been, every plant, every animal, every atom, every start, every galaxy, all of it. More galaxies in the universe than grains of sand on the beach. And that’s what we’re talking about when we say “God.”". I'm not preaching that it is this way, but I find a lot of truth in it. It is a Non-Duel perspective and many Adavaitans teach this theory. Advaita literally means "not two". It refers to the idea that there is alone one reality of pure conciousness, and is ultimately real, while the transient phenomanal world is an illusory appearance (or dream as she states in Midnight Mass). Where would her daughter and family be waiting for her? Where does the ocean wait while the wave breaks at the shore?

I personally was so overjoyed with how refreshing their take on a relationship felt to me. It wasn't lovey dovey, or sexually driven, it wasn't obtuse or hard to define. It was beautiful, and hopeful. I like that you never see them kiss, or have any real physical expression because there doesn't need to be. Felt so real to how I picture a true love story. Like a really real, grounded on earth, love story.

Kate is such a powerhouse as an actress. She's literally the only actress who, when crying on screen (when she touches Nell's body in THOHH & when Riley dies in MM) can make me cry in real life, she makes it so raw, visceral & haunting. Fantastic interview!

I remember hearing about a little movie called Hush being on Netflix and being blown away by her performance. By then I hadn't heard of Mike. It was only until after I saw Oculus a few months later where I Googled him and was like "Holy fucking shit, that's the same director" and watched all of his movies up until Hush and I've been in love with him since
