Mike is absolutely correct about there being an insane amount of horror within religion. I recall being at my great grandmother's funeral, and the pastor/priest giving the sermon about how when Jesus returns all the dead will rise again, and all that. But the way he described it literally made it sound like terrifying Zombie Apocalypse stuff, and even my parents were like, "uhhhh, this is creepy af." So yeah, Mike is right on the money with that.

Dang, just watched the last episode. Hey, Mike, if you happen to read this, I love your worldview. It's like you understood something about the deep meaning of the universe that make us afraid and at the same time watch in awe. Like that Angel/Demon (doesn't matter it's the same anyways). But I feel kinda sad, because I know that only very few ppl will understand what you have to say. Your series aren't really horror, they are philosophic parables covered under a story with horror elements. That's true beauty. Thank you, for that story.

I totally agree about the last part. I watched Midnight Mass over the weekend and then I just finished binging Hill House and Bly Manor so watching them all back to back was really intense emotionally yet I was never scared. I've cried so much over the last few days that I'm on day 3 of a migraine (I get really intense migraines especially if I've been talking, crying, chewing/eating crunchy things). Episode 5 of Midnight Mass was so heartbreaking that I immediately knew that the rest of the show wasn't really about the horror they could see but about the horrific things people can do for malevolent reasons and benevolent reasons which also carries over into Hill House and Bly Manor. I keep hearing about how terrifying everything is but I don't find it scary at all in the typical horror kinda way but instead in the omfg people are cruel kinda way.

@abdel4455

I'd say it classifies more as psychological horror. Sure there's a monster that some would find scary, but the main horror comes from how people can be brainwashed by their religions and knowing that if something like that would happen in the real world, there are people who would embrace it, thinking it was a gift from their god and not realising the danger to humanity they're allowing and accepting with open arms.

I'm glad no mention of vampires/zombies because it's really an amazing choice to represent communion and in Catholicism it is supposed to be quite literally the blood and body of Christ... so the Angel does the bite which is eating of the body then he offers the life giving blood to the person he bit to resurrect them and that's the communion transaction. It's a clever way to show how horrifying the concept really can be.

I watched it when it first came out and that was already ages ago, and it's my favourite Flanagan story so far. As someone who was brought up as a Roman Catholic it created a deep feeling of horror and sadness within me and it really struck a chord. It wasn't until 2 weeks ago that I realised how much, when I had a nightmare about the creature and the townspeople (so any months later after the last time I saw it). From an objective point of view, these elements aren't any scarier than any other horror monsters out there, but I think combining the realistic depiction of people's fragility and reliance on faith and thinking they're in a safe, comfortable bubble, with an evil entity that clearly perverts and consumes whilst being stuck in an island, really taps deep and visceral fears we have about the world. And Mike's point about religion having a lot of horror I think is correct. If you're scared of the unknown, you make it known, but if you're scared of a monstrous or colossal unknown, then you deify it, just like the angel.

I've never heard of Mike Flanagan before Midnight Mass, but I am a fan now. He "gets it" ! I feel like I was in on a secret. What a masterpiece ! This was the ONLY Netflix series that made me cry.

@@leftyrighty5045 you won't regret it!! btw Bly and Hill House are a 9 and 10 ep series, which gives Mike a lot of room to develop the characters and it just flows perfectly you won't wanna stop 😂

They never used the “word”, the V word, and that was the right choice. It worked as well in the Walking Dead. Never used the Z word there either. Kept it more serious.
