Today's video is all about how to write multiple equal protagonists. These are stories where more than one character can be categorized as a protagonist, and although they can be tricky to write sometimes, I hope that this video can help you to simplify the process in your own creations!
Multiple protagonists are a great way to add various perspectives to the story. If you have a few characters that are very prominent in the story, writing the story with an equal focus on each of them gives them all their own time to shine.
How many protagonists can you have?
This is really up to you and the story you're writing, but I would recommend 1-5 main protagonists at the most. The more protagonists you have, the more difficult it can be to write the story, as protagonists are very unique character types in the way you write them.

I think a good example of multiple protags would be warriors: power of 3. Where there are three siblings with a unique power and every chapter it focuses on each ones pov

I feel like one of the best examples is Avatar: The Last Airbender. Such a well-written story with Aang, Zuko, Sokka, Toph and Katara sharing important roles.

Another good example of the main protagonist not actually BEING the real protagonist is InuYasha, where the story is told through the perspective of Kagome Higurashi.

InuYasha is one of my favourite animes, so I can't believe I forgot it!! Kagome and InuYasha are a very good example of multiple protagonists 😊

One of the best examples multiple protagonist could be Haikyu, I think it does the job quite well

I really discovered a lot, especially regarding the other type of character know as the deuteragonist, this kind of information can really help you enhance your story, I also made sure to note the most important points for me, I really needed it cause despite my good drawing skills, I still lack a lot regarding story telling :)

Hmm. The story I'm writing does have a decent amount of main protags (or perhaps deuteragonist - unsure). But it will change from each era. I.e. first stage focuses on Lao and the relationships between his parents. Then throughout different stages of his adult life hop from different main characters.

Alot to take in but i can see where you are coming from as that has been a question i have been wanting to ask on "what if you have a scene that has multiple protagonists?" Another good anime and game that can be refernced here are Durrarara and Baccanno as both of these animes have more than one protagonist and each of them has there own sort of unique goal but they way how they did it made me question on it abit metal gear rising and aswell as rdr2 also has more than one protagonist as one takes place in the future and has all of them meeting at the same time while another one passes the torch on too the other. Though i really do like the other examples that you shown here. Though i might do something simialr like this in a another story down the line. Though i also do like emphasis on the protagonist as i seen a couple of works that sometimes confuse that abit and yes the protagonist is a person that drives it forward with a goal if not then a set of goals that person must complete. taking real life experiences are a good example and give that character more feeling can show the reader on how them and that character relates as they are trying to strive for that goal and makes them root for that character more. Though that hero and villan one is a good one as i have seen something like that before in the past and has given me an idea on how to write for that format for one of my stories. Still this was a pretty good and helpful video as always midnight and defently do keep it up 😎👍

I think this video might help with writing multiple protagonist scenes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9eElZd8qMCmp6c.html I think even in stories with multiple protagonists, the chapter will always be shown from one of the protagonists main perspectives. As long as the POV is kept in mind, then multiple protagonists can talk in a scene like regular characters would. Thank you also for the anime examples with multiple protagonists!! Question: are madoka and homura from puella magi madoka magica equal protagonists? Because most of the (tv-series) plot is told trough Madoka POV. But Homura drives the story. But I heard you mention in a previous video that Homura is the protagonist and Madoka is the deuteragonist, so I’m confused 😅. EDIT: The video I referenced was “12 characters your comic/light novel needs!”. Specifically the deuteragonist part.

I'm a big fan of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and this is a very interesting question. Personally, I would say that Madoka is the protagonist, and Homura is the deuteragonist. After all, even though Homura does drive the story and we see her perspective quite a lot later on, the story revolves around Madoka. All of Homura's decisions are centered around Madoka. This is why I would think that Madoka is the protagonist. However, in the movie 'Rebellion', I would say that they are equal protagonists by then. This is because both characters become the focus of the movie, and we see the balance between Homura and Madoka. This is just my opinion, but I think that Madoka is a protagonist and Homura is a deuteragonist for most of the series, except for the third movie when they become equal protagonists. 😊

@@midnightXcross I understand where your coming from but without Homura Madoka Magica would not have existed. If Homura didn’t make the wish to go back in time and save Madoka. Madoka would have died from fighting Walpurgisnacht. Homura was the one that kept resseting the timeline to give Madoka a happy ending. Madoka only pushed her in the right direction. Madoka would’ve become a Magical girl much earlier if Homura hadn’t told her to carefully think about what she wished for. She has been driving the story forward from the shadows because she already knew what would happen and didn’t trust anyone with that information. We only didn’t notice it at first because we saw every thing through Madoka’s POV, who doesn’t remember what happened in the previous timelines. To cut to the chase, I think Homura has been making the main decisions that move the story forward. While Madoka was being the one that motivated/inspired her to make those decisions. I think that makes them at least equal protagonists in the main show.

@@lysa9483 Okay, you have convinced me. Especially with the fact that if Homura didn't change time so many times, Madoka's powers wouldn't exist. And the main show wouldn't exist if it weren't for Homura. I agree, overall that does make them equal protagonists!
