When I went to a US supermarket, I was very shocked by the fruit and vegetables. They were huge, completely without any blemishes, and most were unnaturally shiny. Carrots shouldn't be shiny. Basic tomatoes shouldn't be bigger than my fist. As reluctant as I was to eat them after seeing them (I was there for two weeks- too long to fast), I can report that they had almost no flavour whatsoever, and almost every other food was worryingly sweet (EVERYTHING has sugar- even the bread is sweet!). The people I was visiting saw no problem with any of it, because this is how it has always been for them.

My Dad took my eldest brother and I to the USA on holiday nearly 30 years ago. My eldest brother and I are both vegetarian and had been since years before that holiday (which made it quite difficult to find things to eat, as we were travelling around and not staying in places that we were able to prepare our own meals) but we were all (including my meat eating but vegetable loving Dad) left feeling as though the flavour was grown out of all the fruit and veg…maybe that’s why a lot of Americans seems to have borderline addictions to ketchups and hot sauces.

The UK has all of these laws still as we kept them when leaving the European Union. The threat of some of these protections being rolled back in order to get a trade deal with the US is really concerning to a lot of people. The chlorinated chicken is really just seen as symbol of the poor food standards in the US.
@Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Washing chicken with chlorine doesn't seem to be an issue in and of itself (unlike washing chicken eggs which... Means that Americans have to refrigerate their eggs while only some Brits do and others store them in a cupboard because they keep without refrigeration here), but it's a useful shorthand for the lax standards in the US farming industry that causes it to be needed.

They also in USA say eating medium rare burger is good or rare burger. Burgers should only be well done. Only meat that should be medium rare is actually streak. I hope they don't allow it for the sake of greed. Now we are out of the EU our gov should be striving for us to be even better! Cut plastics from supermarkets, reduce cost of fresh vegetables and fresh food rather than have processed food as the cheap option. Help to teach and encourage less reliance on meat in almost every meal. There's no reason they should still be allowing plastic manual toothbrushes and earbuds to be sold in the UK when they now make them out of wood/Bamboo. there's also no reason they should still be allowing cosmetics/shampoo etc tested in animals!! They should ban them all or at least have huge warnings on the front of products saying tested on animals and have a disgusting photo of the poor animal like they have on tobacco packets!!

Forgive me, I’ll start straight away by saying I can’t quite remember the full source. However in my University textbook, International Development, produced by the Open University, there’s a chapter that covers both food sustainability and healthy eating. I was shocked, appalled and genuinely disappointed in the UN once I learned that in the late 20th century the UN was compiling a report of foods that should have a daily limit, such as fat and sugar. Lobbyists from the US decided that wasn’t profitable for them, and wrote to the UN threatening to lobby their government to remove the US funding for the UN if the UN included sugar on that list. Bear in mind that much of US politics are run by capitalists owning large companies, and so this was a legitimate threat. That year the report was released WITHOUT a limit for sugar in products, and the UN retained its funding. Despicable.

@jordanhowe1899
@jordanhowe1899 3 жыл бұрын
@@ILoveDawko oh the blame is most definitely largely on the US, and I understand why the UN altered the report, but say they did stand their ground and the limit was added that year … how large a change would that have made? In the textbook I learned this in, within the chapter on healthy eating it also encompasses awareness of good eating habits. The US still (up to 2012 at least when the book was published) had official guidance for a healthy diet including high meat and dairy intake, something not based on facts but the mass-production of beef that lined their pockets. The US population still believed that to be true. If the UN had reported a limit on sugar in products, how much money would be saved in dental, medical and weight loss program bills? How many lives would be healthier? What other standards would have improved? Trying to take the slow approach is a valid method in many instances, and yes especially when it comes to international relations. But the cost for choosing to back down here was too high to justify, and to this day international organisations are still ceding too much to the US because of how much weight they can throw around. The worst is that we are all aware of and disgusted by China doing it, but that level of awareness and disgust isn’t shown when the US does the same, and yet - at the time of the report at least - the UN treated them differently. I know this has been long winded, but I guess my final conclusion is: the US is fucked, aint no one doing nothing about it, I held the UN to higher standards and realised reality is complex and full of BS.

Its honestly disgusting, the state of the food market in the USA, (and the unfortunate fact that it is spreading into other countries too), and the way its massive companies put profit over health and environment. (Not that other countries companies dont, it's just that the USA is the most prolific). We had to do about coca-cola in geography, and there were two ase studies. One in Mexico, and one in India. In the one in Mexico, they basically took almost all the clean water from the locals and made it into coca-cola (I think its 5 litres of water to make 1 litre of cola), causing water to become three times the price of cola, and also damaging the crops and environment in the area. The area has a massive obesity problem, and many people dont even know that it's the coca-cola that is the issue. I cant remember the specifics if the Indian factory's case study, but it was just as bad, if not worse, due to the added issue to poor treatment of protestors and women by the guards of the factory.

@@lucaacco9631 It wouldn't surprise me if US food standards are by design and working with the health care system, after all, the more people get sick, the more the money men profit from that, that's a big problem in why having a health care for profit is not a good idea as it incentive then to get people to come through the doors whereas in Europe and every other developed countries, it's the opposite to keep health care cost down. What I don't get about the US system is that they make a meal out of universal health care as being socialist and yet many other services like the fire departments and police services are more or less socialist.

@@lucaacco9631 It is more than just healthcare. As a french, i have to say... village markets exist everywhere here, even in big towns, and they are still popular in 2021. I hearsay France is the last country in Europe to still have those, and this is tradition that dates back from the Middle Ages and before. Farmers there sell stuff bred without chemical, totally naturally, no GMO, because if they used any, they would lose all their customers. It is buying directly from traditional farms, cheese makers, shepherds and such. Local supermarkets have started to buy their stuff too, to sell them, because it is popular. Any kind of unecessary stuff in food is bound to be disliked. It is to the point where even industrial companies try to reduce any kind of preservative, dying, or anything in most of their products, and even advertise how natural their stuff is (allegedly). Because even with industrial food, french people want natural stuff. We had anti-GMO insurrections, with some Mc Donald's methodically destroyed, and GMO plantations methodically weeded out, and the leader ended up being prosecuted, but never really convicted. He is a farmer himself. It is not merely because GMO are bad for health. But because there is no need to change something that is already perfect naturally. The rioters got so much support in France that their leader even founded an anti mondialisation political party. He became european deputy for an ecologist party, and even got reelected. It goes much beyond the health matter. We even created an expression for unatural food, that goes beyond "junk food". It is called "malbouffe".

The trouble with chlorine-washed chicken is that it covers up the effects of bad methods used in chicken production (at least some of them). Proper production methods would not allow bacteria to infect the chicken meat in the first place. If Europe can do it, so can the USA. Imports of chlorinated chicken are banned not because they are unsafe, but because those products would have an unfair competitive advantage over domestic producers who don't take short cuts and do the job properly. This argument also applies in the case of GM foods and meat or dairy products from dosed-up animals, quite apart from any human heath issues, as does the not-so-small matter of animal welfare considerations.

Coca cola’s Dasani water hasn’t been sold in the UK since 2004. UK people don’t like to pay for tap water as if it’s spring water (from wells or springs). We like water from the Scottish hills or Harrogate, not south London taps, albeit it was priories and minerals added to it. There was an unfortunate contamination of the usual additives in a batch of UK Dasani water that included chemicals of the cancer inducing sort (bromate) that were over the legal limit. There was a court case and the product was withdrawn from shops never to be reintroduced again. All this is out there in more detail if you look it up. Some potential customers are concerned about the levels of magnesium sulphate. British tap water is some of the safest in the world … before you start putting other stuff in it.

When I go shopping I don't tend to buy a lot of meat. Most of the food I make is meat free or substitute just because I like it better. But if its steak night, or I need some lamb for a decent Stifado, I ALWAY read the packaging. We have lots of markings that tell you from a glance where your meat is from. And I know some people will naturally disagree, but from what I saw on my visit to texas, cows live very different lives in america. I live in rural Derbyshire, in the peak district and we have a fuck ton of cows here. Catle farming in the States looks very intensive, whereas British cows have seemingly more space, so fewer cows per field. They are grass fed most of the year and don't look malnourished or malformed. they just look more natural. The cows I saw in texas looked so unhealthy and almost misshapen from being grown too fast or fed weird chemicals changing their fundamental structure. So I know, I know, meat is murder and I'm an evil c*** for still eating it (like Igaf anyway), but I genuinely choose the meat I know is either local or as close too local as possible. Because I have seen those cows. I know their fields and the family that runs the farm the produce comes from. And I can trust its better by a long stretch.

I think it's important to note that the EU is extremely cautious because we have had a lot of scandals revolving around food, and epidemic like the mad cow disease did alert the opinion about the practices of the industry. Not sure if there were less food scandals in the US, but i think in europe the outcry is louder and we try to learn from it. @@Exile1a I know what you mean, but i don't think that it necessarily is the main reason. Two example come to my mind. (They might not be representitive for the whole of the EU but they are what come to my mind) One is Hungary at the moment, and one is my own country. Mr. Orban has (i think) no fear to be replaced. At least from outside it looks that way, so he neither seems to adjust his actions for the fear of being replaced, nor does he get replaced. (So your argument won't work for hungary at the moment i think) And for my country: In our case, our parties aren't really that different from each other in food safety. So no fear of being replaced for that topic. We have 3 bigger and 2 smaller parties in parliament. The currently biggest party want's to represent the farmers and farming industry. We have a lot of "licensed organic" farmers and a significant number of them are small mountain farms, so one can guess what their position in food related things most of the time is. The next one always had consumer protection as one of their agendas, the next one is our "right wing" party, and they favor anything local before foreign and i already mentioned what the local farms are about ;-) . The small ones: one is the green party, no need to explain their stance in food safety topics... And the last one we have is a neoliberal one, but even they are pretty much on the same boat in that regard. (and couldn't afford not to) We are a very food centered and small mountainous country, so it might be different in other european places. (people here really like to eat and prefer healthy produced food and animal health.)

I am a Brit and lived in the US for many years. I found that good food is really expensive in the US. The sad thing is a lot of folk live on fast food because it is cheaper. Obesity is epidemic. I put on weight even though I tried to eat healthily. When I returned to the UK I lost weight without even trying that hard. I feel sad that poorer Americans have so few choices when it comes to nutrition. Hiding harmful additives with acronyms and jargon on labels doesn’t help as folk don’t have the time to research it. So really, it is disingenuous of corporations stating that people have choices, they really don’t. Great video. Corporations have no wish to protect their consumers, all they care about is profit maximisation and will do everything within their power to do this even at the expense of the public health. Governments are supposed to be elected to serve the people but sadly the corporate lobbyists have effective mechanisms in place to gain more sway over law makers than their electorate could achieve by regular voting. America is in thrall to corporate oligarchs and this is the result when there is no control over extreme capitalism. Just as with any extremist ideology, the losers are always the regular joes and janes 😔

Comments were mostly; "meh, just take the cheapest one" or "takes too much time, we all gonna die of stomething"......(WTF?) Last time over, in 2013, it had become a bit better, but still not good, imo.

In my mind, if food needs disinfecting you shouldn't be eating it. Also, an interesting point that wasn't fully discussed in the video is that in the UK (and I'd guess other European countries) antibiotics must be used sparingly in animal rearing, i.e. only when absolutely necessary, and the animal cannot be slaughtered for food until the antibiotics have left their system. This means that there aren't any antibiotics in the meat that ends up on our plates.

I had heard about giving healthy cows antibiotics (which did he say was precautionary?) but a lot of this is new to me. Again is there a reason why the US wash eggs and are located in the chill section, as I would be interested to learn, in the UK they are found usually in a normal aisle.

Here in Germany, just like in the UK we dont wash eggs. An egg has a natural layer which keeps out bacteria. In nature a birds egg stays safe inside until the chicken hedges. Never wondert why? We wash before used in the kitchen or boil them just like they are.

@@midwestamericans3806 Thanks for clarifying this Ethan, so from reading the information link so if I've understood correctly it's more for sanitising and salmonella that the eggs are washed. So the eggs become porous and need to be chilled to prevent bacteria from entering.

@@tonys1636 That's why I put "for a cow" in brackets. The animal products are natural, but they were unnatural for a cow. In fact given mad cow is a Prion disease even humans if we had eaten those contaminated animal products would have still gotten sick or become carriers ourselves of vcjd. It is natural for small numbers of humans to get cjd or cows to get mad cow. Historically the number of people that would have gotten vcjd was so low to be negligible. The problem occurred because the whole food chain became infected making numbers of vcjd become significant.

About that chlorinated chicken thing, many European countries have bans on additives that do nothing but hide the indicators of rotten stuff that people are familiar with, for example there is an additive you can add to milk, whose name I do not remember, that make it look and smell fresh all the while possibly having lethal levels of dangerous bacteria, just no indication of it, so people consume it instead of throwing it away, and get sick. Being able to figure out if some food is safe trough smell or sight can be really important.

Once in France we stopped at a roadside cafe or routier for lunch. It was a set meal and started with a sliced tomato with dressing on it. That is all.
