Intense Close Range Intercept of Violent EF-4 Tornado - Iowa High Risk Tornado Outbreak - 3/31/23

The first SPC issued "High Risk" (level 5/5) in over 2 years brought multiple strong-to-violent tornadoes to eastern Iowa on March 31st, 2023. This video includes footage from 2 or possibly 3 of those tornadoes, all spawned by the same parent supercell, as well as an intercept of a tornado-warned QLCS south of Iowa City, which brought large hail and high winds, along with torrential rain. Thankfully, nobody was killed from the tornadoes in Iowa. Sadly, many other areas were not as fortunate.
The close range wedge tornado featured in this video has been preliminarily rated EF-4 (violent) with maximum winds of 170 mph.
This is definitely my "best" chase to date, and one of the most intense moments of my life. I still cannot believe what I witnessed.

Having storm chased and tracked storms since 1998, I can honestly say this is in the top 5 of the most visually stunning, violent tornadoes I have ever seen. Thank you for this footage. While this was rated an EF4, I think its very safe to presume that based on ground motion, upward velocities, etc - this likely had EF5 strength over the open field prior to hitting structures.

@@user-mw8ii6zk8j , There are tour groups with websites available to give you all the information you need, via Google. Tempest Tours and Tornadic Expeditions are just two of SEVERAL that you might want to look at. For roughly $5000, I would expect you to be able to find a decent several day expedition. You will likely have to book your tour well in advance. There are only a few spaces available on each tour outing, and they tend to fill up in advance. You'll end up riding a lot of road miles, and conservatively speaking, it's even money on whether or not the weather cooperates enough to make for an 'active storm chase'. Usually you'll get to see some decent storms. Catching a tornado? That's never guaranteed, though you'll have about as good a chance of it as you can possibly get, being that you're with highly experienced chase meteorologists on the expedition. I suggest making safety your top criteria for selection of a tour group, and pack along a bit of money for food, snacks and souvenirs, because you WILL be in for quite a tour of an amazing area of our country! Good luck!

@@user-mw8ii6zk8j On the plus side, nobody invited you, so the chances of you ever being sucked up in a vortex went way down! But on the other hand, nobody likes you. So it's kind of a win-win. 😂 I'm kidding bub, I hope you get to live your dream of chasing storms. Seriously. It's always been a passion of mine, but I live in the northeast, so not a lot of storm action up here (unless you have a phobia of snow!). Good luck in your pursuit, literally and figuratively. ✌️

It's so nice to hear the actual sounds, and actual explanations of what's going on. That thing is a monster, my heart is with the people affected and the first responders who are going to have to see a lot of horrible things the next few days :< . I was out on my porch, sipping on some sweet tea, when I saw it comin'. A big ol' twister was headed straight for my farm. I hollered for my wife and kids to get in the cellar, but I couldn't leave my cattle behind. So I gathered up the ones I could find and made a mad dash for the barn. Just as I was latching the door, the twister hit. It was like nothin' I'd ever seen before. The wind was so strong it felt like it was gonna rip the skin right off my bones. I held onto the door for dear life, praying it wouldn't budge. But the twister had other plans. It ripped the roof off the barn like it was nothin' and sent a cow flyin' through the air like a frisbee. I watched in horror as it landed on my neighbor's roof, mooing and carryin' on like it was no big deal. That's when I noticed somethin' strange. Through all the chaos, I could hear music playin'. It was Kenny Rogers, singin' 'The Gambler'. I thought I was losin' my mind until I saw him runnin' towards me, holdin' his pants up with one hand and a lit-up crack pipe in the other. "Can I use your bathroom?" he yelled over the roar of the twister. Well, I wasn't about to turn down Kenny Rogers, so I let him in. He took a dump so massive I thought the whole house was gonna shake apart. But he thanked me kindly and headed back out into the storm, smokin' his pipe like it was nothin'. When the twister finally passed, I stumbled out of the barn to find my farm in shambles. But I was grateful to be alive, and to have met Kenny Rogers in the most unexpected way possible. And that cow on the roof? Well, let's just say it made for a good story to tell at the local diner.

I've NEVER seen anything like that before. Also, Thank You for not talking very much. You gave facts, and just a small bit of emotion, which is totally understandable. Iowa. My adopted home. Wind chills to -40, winds to almost 200 miles per hour in a tornado, days of straight line winds in the 40s-50s, occasional derecho. I love it here. You have to admire the crew that designed and built that water tower. It held up to those winds.

I've seen a ton of tornado chasing videos and I think this is one of the best. You got lucky with the conditions...it seems like it's unusual to have such a "clean" view of the tornado, meaning the funnel not being wrapped in rain or the surrounding conditions being totally chaotic. The footage of the formation at the beginning was really interesting...you could see the airflow so well. And you had the perfect recording spot...close, but not directly in the path. Incredible work. I hope all those affected get back to something resembling normalcy really soon. Heartbreaking to see the utter devastation that used to be houses and farms.

Wow, you've done what no news cast has been able to do, make me feel the fear. The audio was definitely a big part of that, the sound of that wind. You must have excellent equipment. Ending the video with the aftermath really brought home the tragedy. Newscasts are so disconnected, but what you've done here is shown in detail the forces involved and then the immediate aftermath. That makes it all so real. Do you have a special car you use that's already smashed up from hail? This isn't a request, but it would be amazing to do a ride along with you. I wouldn't dare try chasing a tornado myself, but you've obviously acquired a great deal of knowledge.

I have been in two tornadoes, and this is the FIRST video that I have ever seen that gives a great close-up experience of what it is really like. Though being in it is exponentially worse, this video gives a small glimpse into the power, destruction, and the noises that You feel in your body. The air pressures also have a very weird affect on You as it passes by. First, it blows everything with lower damaging winds, then It feels like Your house is going to get sucked up and thrown a few miles away. Its described as a noise of a train going through your living room, but it is way worse than that. Our senses get overloaded until we go into a life and death mentality. Humans sense these things long after the animals do. There are warning signs that can predict a tornado coming your way. Watch your animals behavior, and watch the skies. If You sense the best weather that You have ever seen in your life, the most beautiful skies, then You are in the pathway, a few minutes later. That truly is the calm before the storm, and it is an indication. It is a weird thing. I'm not happy to be in a tornado, but glad that I have that experience behind me. It is life altering, to say the least.

I’ve research tornado genesis. Notice the large girth of the tornado. Notice too that unlike many tornadoes, this one is actually sucking up mounds of soil-tons of it-not just blowing up loose top soil. So much that the funnel almost appears to be smoke from a forest fire. This tornado has a medium width and very strong “engine” that is rather low in the storm.* Much, much lower than normal. Fascinating and a great video. *The girth of a tornado is a function of its “engine’s” width, it’s strength, and its height in the storm. Additionally, the further down from a tornado’s “engine,” the higher a tornado’s circulation (wind) and the weaker any vertical winds (vacuum, sucking) and vice versa. Notice this tornado’s strong vertical winds. It’s “engine” is quite, quite low. This really is a fantastic specimen and a great video.

@Taima
@Taima Жыл бұрын
@@isocarboxazid If it was as simple as you make it sound it would happen far more often. Fact of the matter is that there's some measure of predictability when it comes to tornadoes. No you won't straight up know their path, but storm chasers find these tornadoes by going to locations where they're most probable to spawn and by basing their options for retreat and pursuit on that. Once it exists, it's again not at all fully predictable, but they're also not ambiguous monsters of death to stare at. There's a lot people can figure out about a tornado based on the way it looks and moves, and radar. Ever notice how good some/many storm chasers are at avoiding rain in these instances? Certain sides of a tornado will often be clear (precipitation-wise) and the far side getting the hell of wind and rain and hail. This video showed a bit of both, as the storm moved to, past and beyond them, bringing that other side with it. It's a complicated thing that I barely only know the most basic bits of, but the point to take away from this is that storm chasers aren't cluelessly at the mercy of a tornado.
