The second phase of the Ethiopian-Eritrean War continued in February 1999. Both sides used the pause to acquire much more capable fighters. Ethiopia purchased Su-27s from Russia while Eritrea bought MiG-29s from Ukraine. Those two types would soon meet in actual engagements. Which side ended as the clear winner? Watch the video and find out.

Now this was a faceoff I have been looking forward to. Never quite knew the circumstances of the engagements but the lack of long ranged R-27ER/T's and inflight data link to compensate for the lost radar definitely hindered the Eritrean Fulcrums. Although their governments inflexibility did them no favors as time passed. Although from ACIG I read that most of the kills were scored with R73's. It's been a while since I read the excerpts though so its probable that that information may be outdated. Certainly a war most never heard of with air combat that's certainly of interest. An excellent depiction of the face off and fighting. I always wanted to mention how much I love your work ever since KZfaq recommended your work a few months ago.

Thanks for this elaborate and very positive comment! I also found some older ACIG articles and there's different information. My primary source was Tom Cooper's 'Ethiopian-Eritrean Wars Volume 2 from 2018. Excellent video. Air power is vital to the Ethiopians. I remember discussing this long-lasting conflict with Ethiopian university teachers back in 1979. Between 1978 and 1983 Ethiopia, whose dictator Mengistu was supported by the Soviet Union and its allies, launched six offensives against Eritrea. The Ethiopians I talked to pointed out that they needed a powerful air force because tanks were not effective in mountainous or semi-mountainous terrain.

While the Su-27 head down display show a top down view of what in front of the Su-27, so situational awareness favor the Su-27. The Mig-29 was conceived as low-cost short range interceptor primarily for air defense duty while the Su-27 was a true front-line fighter by the time it entered service so advantage will always go with the Su-27

Another very interesting video about a war I didn't know about. Also, at 06:54, did you use a different Mig-29 deploying smoke which you damaged intentionally with an explosion in the air or is it the same Mig-29 that got hit by the Su-27's missle ? Getting hit by a missle and still being able to fly only happened to me in the A10A and both Su-25's in DCS.
@showtime112
@showtime112 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent! 😁 It seems impossible to replicate many things form real life in DCS. Such as getting missiles to just damage an airplane. Also, they will never miss as long as you launch them within parameters, (and the target airplane is not pulling 9g and chaffing like mad). So, when I want a radar guided missile to miss. I turn my radar off seconds before impact. That only works for Fox1 though, I don't know what to do with Fox2 and Fox3 😁

We have recently learner that Ukrainian Mig-29s still have the 1980s radar, which is less powerful than the Russian mig-29 radars as Russia had kept their aircraft somewhat modernised. The Su-27 radar already is more powerful than the mid-29s. So it's very possible that the Su-27 purchased off Russia in the late 90s is far superior to the mig-29s purchased of Ukraine.

I am impressed by how well Eritrea did in that war being 4 years old country at that time their economy wasn't even that good I mean their GDP was 688.9 million USD at that time, and Ethiopian had every advantage to annihilate Eritrea's military but that didn't happen. the way I see it the war was useless Eritrea lost over 19,000 of it soldiers and Ethiopia lost 2 billion dollars and over 123,000 of its soldiers only the court to rule Badme belonged to Eritrea which was the main point of the war.

Eritrean government's report of a total of 19,000 Eritrean soldiers dead is false. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea suffered over a 100,000 dead. It was a senseless war but still a humiliating defeat for Eritrea.

I'm still wondering where did Showtime 112 get this info from. These 2 videos not only undermine the work of Eritrean airforce but lacks objectivity and its completely biased.These 2 videos exaggerate the work of Ethiopian airforce despite their many years existence. As an Eritrean I was exasperated to see that the operation carried by the renowned pilot Commander Tesfatsion in retaliation for Ethiopian airforce offence in Asmara were not well presented as his bravery and mission in annihilating the Mekele airport along with the fighter jets ain't well articulated in these videos too.The Eritrean pilots Captain Yonas and Captain Samuel didn't die in air to air combat but rather by the missiles shot from the antiaircraft. Moreover, the Ethiopian air force suffered substantial damage in our 30 years and long fought struggle for our independence. Honestly speaking the Ethiopian airforce is not that competent. Otherwise our independence wouldn't be achieved if you think that the Ethiopian airforce was that strong in helping the ground offence when the Eritreans had at that time neither the airforce nor the sovereignty .But if you say that the Ethiopian public airlines has been doing exceptional work I couldn't agree more.

Dejen himself is saying that he and Yonas been attacked by ground missile batteries in his interviews and of course in the last battles of the war there was a push by Ethiopian troops so that makes you say that the Ethiopian Air force had upper hand on the skies. Since the war was held for two years, I find it difficult to understand in demonstrating that both sides had intensive battle to take Air space superiority in this period of time but regarding the last part of the war in May 12 to June 14 of the year 2000 mainly known 3rd Ethiopian offensive, it doesn't show the Eritrean resistance. I agree that the Ethiopian side had better experience, gear and apparatus. With all advantages what makes the Ethiopian fighter jets scare the Eritrean space for two years indeed topped casualties and losses.

These are biased and narrated from Ethiopia side. You don't mentioned the Air combat 1999 when Ethiopian MiG 27 hit on the Western front by Eritrean pilot and the Mig 23 and 21 Ethiopia lost by anti Aircraft Missiles and the Helicopters destroyed and one when hit by anti Air craft the Ethiopian pilot landed and escaped, but you didn't mentioned. This chauvinism is all because of Eritrea's victory in its war of independence, which consequently gave a chauvinistic image of Eritrea that made it look like it was unbeatable and a force to be reckoned with.
