Love Brian’s channel. He uses zero graphics, everything is ad hoc, and done in one take, and he absolutely refuses to post links. The low budget aesthetic is awesome!

So interesting and fun to see two KZfaq creators I follow talking about a subject they love. Plus the pretty cat! I am so envious of both of your bookshelves. And I think it's pronounced puh-LA-ver with short a sound like in cat. But I am also the person who had often read but never heard the word hideous pronounced. It was a train wreck when I first said it out loud in a classroom. I'm pretty sure the teacher is still laughing all these years later. Quitters, Inc was the first King story I read and it made me realize that this guy could write. I had always thought of his stuff as just light horror stories and I'm not a horror fan. But he has depth. I am not a Constant Reader, but I have gone on to read some other stories and books and definitely enjoy his writing.

Palaver is of portuguese origins, 'palavra' meaning word. From Merrian-Webster 'Did you know? During the 18th century, Portuguese and English sailors often met during trading trips along the West African coast. This contact prompted the English to borrow the Portuguese palavra, which usually means "speech" or "word" but was used by Portuguese traders with the specific meaning "discussions with natives." The Portuguese word traces back to the Late Latin parabola, a noun meaning "speech" or "parable."'

My own entry point to King was in large part due to The Stand tv movie from the 90s. After watching it i got really curious about Randall Flagg and the details that were probably in the book and left out of the series and I jumped into the Long and Uncut version. Was a chore but made me a fan.

Oh boy, I’m in the minority. I didn’t care for Boy’s Life. It was an ok read but nothing I’d pick up again. Now, Summer of Night by Dan Simmons was everything. IT is my fav book of all time and SON has beautiful echoes of IT....atmosphere, characters you adore, coming of age....all of it. The Rendering truck in SON was terrifying and so well done. Brilliant! Lonesome Dove is the book that, other than IT, means the most to me. It broke my heart in a million pieces when I first read it. If there’s a more perfect book out there I haven’t found it. I also want to read Pillars of the Earth and Shogun. Both are on my shelves but they seem so intimidating. I need to get on them.

You are right its James Herbert, different to King but still some really good books especially the rats series . I would recommend McCammon but I think if people hype him too much you may get disappointed. But Swan Song and Boys Life are amazing. I also really enjoyed Night Boat, Stinger, Gone South and They Thirst.

I wouldn't go as far as comparing Boy's Life to IT outside of the coming of age aspect, and boyhood friends. Outside of that, it's a story on its own. My best advice: go in with no expectations other than just a good story, beautiful writing (not flowery, just feel-good writing) and magic of being a kid...
