This is the pinnacle of boxing, no clowns, no trash talk, pure skill at the highest level by 2 G.O.A.Ts (almost) in their prime, McCallum being on the older side but still as evident, with all his experience and knowledge intact.

Two of the greatest fighters of all time. One of the greatest fights of all time. This is boxing at the highest level. No mindless slugging, no running, no one dimensional fighters. Two all time great complete fighters going to war.

This is the highest of the high in terms of technical skill. People talk about chess match in boxing. This is the epitome. Both guys had some of the highest IQs in boxing

Toney uses a sideways stance when attacking and an open stance when stalking to cut ring off. Simple yet powerfully effective. Bruce Lee advocated keeping it simple and brutal. Toney switched it up southpaw on inside, beautiful stuff. MM is a warrior tho. Brutal fight, when technique slips due to fatigue it’s the heart that starts to factor in. Both guys are the real deal to the maximum. Although it seemed close if u watch carefully u can see Toney is clearly better. Way more power from ground up, more dynamic movements better IQ. Mccallum able to hang cuz of his very good grip on fundamentals, conditioning and heart/toughness bs decision tho

@@MrMarco855That's probably his fault. The older Toney got, the bigger his appetite got and the lazier he got. So he ended up losing to some guys he had no business losing to at points. The man was an absolute genius though.

@@LucieOne That's an often-repeated exaggeration. He played quarterback in high school at 200 lbs. Years later he was fighting professionally at 160. He made one hell of a sacrifice to shed 40 lbs as he got older. He had 31 fights at 160, 13 more at 168, that's 44 fights only increasing one division. It took a lot of work to maintain himself that long, especially since he was at 200 as a 17 year old quarterback. As champion he fought 4 or 5 times a year, a very heavy schedule that required almost constant training. He was still fighting at 175 after 53 fights, still 25 lbs. below his high school weight. His weight began to increase as he aged but he continued to fight well despite that. At one point he was 69-4 and was routinely criticized in the way that you've mentioned. He fought as a pro for 29 years until almost 50, hard to be critical of a man with his accomplishments. 77-10 as a pro, as good a record as almost anyone and more longevity than everyone except Hopkins. He was disrespected routinely, not only for his weight but early on because he was rough around the edges and wouldn't kiss anyone's ass.
@LucieOne
@LucieOne 3 ай бұрын
@@MrMarco855Fair enough and I appreciate your defending him but, as I said, he's my favorite fighter ever, so I appreciate his warts as well. They actually enhance his legacy all these years later. How can a former middleweight end up, with his belly jiggling, standing directly in front of arguably the hardest punching heavyweight at the time, losing a split decision that he should have won. Previously did the same thing to the best cruiserweight at the time and wore down and nearly stopped a guy who specialized in wearing people down. He was JAMES TONEY. It didn't matter how hard you hit because it wasn't like there was a chance in hell that you could catch him with a clean punch anyway. He was not above critique -- no one is, we're all hilariously flawed -- and if he somehow were I would not love him so much. So I agree that he's been criticized in an exaggerated way, but to the extent that it was true, I couldn't care less. The same way I don't care that Julian Jackson didn't have the greatest chin, or Michael Carbajal had a leaky defense, or Terry Norris' chin wasn't the greatest either and he had a few loose screws, or Jean Pascal seemingly made it his mission to break every single rule in "the book". I loved all of them, but no one like James Toney.

@@LucieOne Nice response, we definitely agree on appreciating the man for the athlete he is/was. I think you're referring to Samuel Peter aren't you? Toney definitely won their first fight. The problem was, Peter vs Klitschko was already a done deal, they expected a bigger return than a Toney/Klitschko fight. That has to be the case, because Toney beat his ass and Peter couldn't lay a glove on him. It's nice to know that someone sees in Toney what I see, one hell of a fighter. God Bless you.
