Mike Trout card have driven the modern baseball card market for the past 10 years. Lately however, Trout looks human with slowing performance and injuries. In this video we break down some recent Mike Trout baseball card sales and discuss if we think all baseball cards are going to drop. We also discuss our personal favorite grading companies outside of PSA and much more!

BTW...as a collector off and on for 4 decades ~I'm 53.... I have no problems with correcting prices....like Scotty referenced earlier I have seen almost unreal value gains in my high grade vintage collection in baseball and football .... those gains have added considerably to my net worth and retirement.... the hobby has been lifted to a level that will not be ignored going forward.... modern cards being the riskiest endeavor by far IMO.

Sealed wax will be the modern outlier over time. Bowman, Bowman Chrome, and Topps Chrome pre 2020 I feel will be fine. Maybe 22 Update. Vintage I agree the best to hold but my budget hasn't allowed anything higher than mid grade. Just a Regular Roller to quote Chris Sewall.

nearly every modern card will go down another 90% of where it is right now. That is their value-little to nothing. The bubble has burst. It will be up to Fanatics to create new demand-I would hate to be them. It's over.

The people I know who returned to the card market after a 20 year hiatus, or started collecting for the first time during Covid still likes the hobby, but have become seriously jaded by the unscrupulous sellers and learned the hard way (after months of purchasing raw cards) that dealers only list the ones they deemed below gem mint. They’ll use camera angles, glare, lower resolution photos, slightly worn cases, specific lighting, etc to conceal flaws. Cards they evaluate to be GM go to PSA or held onto last. Couple that with the fact PSA is wildly unpredictable at times and has become insanely strict to qualify as a 10 and now all the new blood in the hobby is debating whether to eject entirely but certainly doesn’t want to buy right now. And I don’t blame them. The hobby needs eBay to cut selling fees and shipping costs during times like these to ease the bear market overall and inspire action. Course correction is good for markets but we haven’t seen the last of the drop. If the holidays are just as bad, I’m definitely ending all my listings so the sight of them available, ergo unsold, isn’t etched in their subconscious.

Ask and you shall receive! eBay actually has a promotion going on RIGHT NOW. Send any graded card $250+ value to the eBay vault and then sell it on eBay - ZERO SELLER FEES. Seriously. These prices are total scams. This is a pump and dump like stock scheme. Brand new minor league player cards are selling for tens of thousands when retired HOF players have rookies selling for 10-100x less. All those cards will drop down to the hundreds.

This past couple years I have been quite surprised about how docile Mike Trout really is ... I would expect a guy to demand a trade of some kind to a contender in his situation given his talent level and dwindling time window.... he has been quite the anomaly. I expected more drive and fight I guess. HE is pretty soft spoken and aloof. I hope he gets a trip or two to the post season somewhere.... I do think his quiet nature does not help his image. Something people overlook with high value cards (10k+) is that people with large amounts of disposable money can get better and safer returns when interest rates are high by loaning their money. When interest rates are low they can look for other ways to make large returns on their money so they might turn to cards. I think that's a big contributing factor to high value cards dropping so fast.

Great conversation as always. Main thing that surprises me about Trout is the insane expectations this sets for other players in the future. Let’s say Acuna plays at the level he played at this year for 5 more years, wins 2 more MVPs with a few 2nd place (MVP) finishes thrown in…and then he starts to decline or gets injured at around 30. What happens to his prices? How many players continue playing well into their 30s? Same with Ohtani - what happens when (inevitably) he stops pitching and the horn falls off this unicorn - and he becomes “just” a very good hitter. Feel like I should just wait and buy every player once they hit around 38 and have a few bad consecutive seasons. Or wait a couple of years after retirement before induction into HOF. Different sport but have seen that with Tom Brady. His cards are down around 60-70% over last 2 years even though he is generally agreed to be the GOAT. Guess we can get the cards we want at lower prices if we remain patient.

Feela like PSA is the "monster" collectors keep feeding to the point where they just have the monopoly on card grading especially resale. It's an older company but also has a long track of problems accured along the way which boggles me why wouldn't collectors give an upstart company like TAG (computer=scientific/rather than human error which to me is more subjective which is crazy btw) a chance. I know this has been covered so many times though. I also have no affiliation with TAG and if possible like "raw" (although I like graded for authenticity and in some cases uniformity so I am apart of the problem) I mean they are new and with that regard hopefully can keep a clean track record in regards to consistent grading, hopefully turn around times and great service. If we really want to believe our cards are gem mint/near mint/excellent etc... the most critical analysis is at the microscopic level wouldn't scientific evidence be the best there is but instead most op for liquidity based on sales which we know is not accurate. The market will continue to decline because of people not having nearly as much disposable income. I've been collecting off and on since 1987. The market is cyclical. It probably will take several more years to stabilize. We are in a new junk wax era sorta it seems bevause Costco now suddenly has a new Topps package. Costco hadnt had cards since the 90s aka the first junk wax era far as I know. I've been buying low end vintage and 90s inserts. Still bullish on baseball sealed wax pre 2020. Not unlike any collectibles market sports cards go through boom and bust cycles. We all know or should know that PSA-10s of common cards will never hold their value. Why? They're common. The flip side is what about the value of the specific cards referenced in this video? In 50 or 100 years the 1/1 Acuna's, Trouts and a few others will at least be a good store of value. Most of the other stuff - not so much. In 100 years 1997-98 Flair Masterpiece 1/1's will be a great store of value. (Giving concrete examples - not suggesting that Flair Masterpieces have a particular importance. Maybe a Vlad Guerrero Bowman 1/1 buyback). In retrospect a Tim Duncan or Tmac or (Vlad, Bobby Abreu) card will have the historical interest of a LeBron card or Curry, Doncic (Othani, Acuna) etc. Final point, having just come back to the sports card market, what i see is way too many "dealers", way too much social media nonsense, influencers that have no moral compass, sketchy pump and dump schemes, way way way too much product. Perspective is very hard to achieve. A 1986 Fleer Jordan in PSA 10 in 100 years will still have value but it's ability to increase is limited due to it's availability. Enjoyed the discussion you guys had. Thoughtful, insightful and honest. All of which means that few viewers will have paid attention. Sports cards do possess a very important feature almost guaranteeing that the material from 1993 Topps Finest Baseball to today will have some value in the future - collectors will always be there to buy them. More than 99.9999% of everything produced needs to go in the trash, including slabs, but the rest of what remains will be collected literally forever. Remember Beanie Babies?

Topic...should Ohtani base rookies (thinking series 2) out sell Trout update in the same grade? Pop counts are very similiar at PSA. Has Ohtani reached that "god" level?
@Philmington
@Philmington 9 ай бұрын
That card has a few things working against it. Not a pitching image, not the only flagship paper rookie, a base Chrome variant is also widely available (and preferred by most)… and a lot of sealed wax (especially retail) still exists at reasonable prices.
@bulldozer_cards55
@bulldozer_cards55 9 ай бұрын
@Philmington understood. Does that warrant the Ohtani being valued at 10% of the Trout in PSA 10? The Series 2 pitching image in a 10 sells for around $90 - $110 right now. The Trout is selling for $950 - $1000. I wonder if it comes down to the fact that the Trout card is "iconic" and Ohtani doesn't have a flagship rookie that is considered iconic at this point. People compare the Trout update to the 89 UD Griffey as an all time iconic card in the hobby. Even though Ohtani is at that level as a player, I don't see any of his flagship RC as holding the same prestige in people's minds, at least not right now.

Wow, there's no card by Ohtani, Acuna or Trout that should be in the stratosphere of the best card of Schmidt, Henderson, Brett, Ripken, Jeter and Pujols. Are there PSA 10 card/PSA 10 Autos of any of those guys best rookie cards? If so, those cards should clearly - CLEARLY! - be worth more than those 3 guys, and by a wide fucking margin.

Albert Pujols in fact has exactly ONE of his best rookie autos graded PSA 10 w/ 10 auto. 2001 Bowman Chrome. It’s on eBay right now if you’ve got a spare $400k laying around. Beautiful card. Thanks for watching!

How long have any of you been in the business? Your whole first segment was wrong on so many levels. Ultra high end cards have been moving off eBay for the last 5 years. If you own a 6 figure card, you're going to those auction houses ( goldin, heritage, REA, memory lane, mile high, Lelands, or even pwcc). All of them vet buyers, and have an unpaid rate that's ungodly low. EBay doesn't vet buyers at all. All those ultra high end buyers are also not going to eBay anymore. Too much of a risk. And the fees are paid by the buyer not the seller at these auction houses ( buyers premium) so that end bid is what the sellers are getting ( sometimes even a portion of the premium.) Ken did a great job of showing this on the show they did. Also, the top 25 sales of all time come from these auction houses( public auction or brokered private sale). Why wouldn't you want to take advantage of that???

All great points. We collectively missed the mark on this one, agreed. I believe the plan is to add clarity in a future episode. Only a couple cards within the last quarter on eBay broke the 50-60K threshold.

Thanks for the comment, I think you make excellent points about ultra high end. You talk of six figure cards, those should absolutely go the auction house/vetted buyer route. My contention is that all lesser value cards (for sure under 10k or so) would benefit more with more eyes on them which they get on a platform like eBay. Most of the hobby (including me and the majority of the people I deal with) don’t swim in those ultra high end waters. So when we see a rare, highly sought after Bryce Harper sell for $7.5k plus buyers premium on Goldin, it’s shocking because so many more people would have bid on that card if they knew it was up for auction. Just seeing that list of auction houses you mention is crazy! That is a lot to keep up with for the average (again, not ultra high-end seeking) collector. But, I definitely do agree that if you’re looking for a record-breaking sale, an auction house or brokered private deal is the way to go. For the lesser cards though, I think you’d maximize a return by not going that route.

I commented on T-Pot’s video last week that the hobby goes down a dangerous road if we devalue the rookie card. You don’t want anarchy in the hobby where nobody knows what to collect and you have cards with short-term inflated values. What happened last weekend with Sports Card Therapist and shill bidding kind of proves my point if we devalue the rookie card, you have anarchy. So a 9th year Prizm Gold Eli Manning was shill bid last weekend and now Sports card Therapist has deleted all his social media accounts cause he got caught red handed. I believe this card was way overvalued (because it’s not a rookie card), and they had to manipulate the market. To bid almost $2,000 on a 9th Manning card makes no sense in the hobby. If it’s his rookie card, that’s different. But you guys want to keep devaluing the rookie card and base cards, you’re going to get shenanigans like this in the hobby.
