Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

Lewis was no where near ready to take on Iron Mike at that time. @thegooners11....I was ready to dismiss your comment but off the back of what I’ve just said, it’s prob true that Mike peaked early. Not his fault of course, but there are many fighters that beat Mike ONLY because he was on the other side of his ‘early’ peak.

When he lost his cool, everyone was scared including his bodyguards. Only idiots kept laughing until they began crying. Watch a video by Jamie Foxx at a party with Mike. This man was an animal.

The way he speaks, shows a tender soul that was hardened by experience. He didn't want to fight, he simply had to. So proud of the calm, wise man he grew to become.

@@BOZ_11 He always spoke this way and that's my point: a young guy who spoke in an effete way would have been a prime target for bullies and predators in his childhood environment. So, he became hardened by these early formative experiences as a means to protect himself. Mike was, in his own words, "crazy" for most of his youth and adult life, he faced countless setbacks and only in old age does it seem that he has made peace with his bad experiences. Cavett was a great guy. Every interview was 100% real human interaction. Also, no attempts at embarrassing his guests with personal questions about their failures and shortcomings.

Humble and friendly??? let's gather ourselves a moment shall we? First, you're not from Brooklyn and never heard any of the stories about Mike when he was an upcoming fighter still training in Brooklyn, NY. EDIT: I posted what Mike used to do as part of his training when walking the neighborhood. But in today's climate, I might open myself up to a lawsuit or worse. NOT a humble and friendly guy. But I will say he's highly intelligent. Much more so than people will ever give him credit for.

There's video on KZfaq of him in the cat skills doing this incredible exercise where he's laid out on his back and lifting everything but his toes and the back of his head. He's lifting and then rolling his neck. He did it for like 1 to 2 minutes just up and down. Really hard to describe but incredible to see.

Mike Tyson even as a very young man was very articulate, analytical, and philosophical. A deep thinker. He was obviously well read and a great student with some great teachers.

@@jacobhartmann1050Bruce Lee wasn't proved fighter as he didn't have a career of a fighter. But he was proved kung fu teacher and he was a rather legit actor of martial arts at the time. I think it is a mistake to put such people on the same level of the great fighters of sport like Mike Tyson who became famous by real fights and not movies like Bruce Lee.

Boxing is probably the second most legit fighting forms in the world. UFC has proven most martial arts to be border line psuedo science and one of the most basic fighting forms boxing is probably still one of the best fighting techniques in UFC and self defense in general.

This is why Tyson is so fascinating to me. Within a week of becoming the youngest heavyweight champ in history at age 20, he sits for a televised interview with Dick Cavett, known for his intellectualism. Outside of Muhammad Ali, who would do that?

The most vital piece of this entire interview is Mike talking about fear and being afraid of losing / his opponent beating and how controlling that fear/fire is what prepares him mentally for every fight. 90% mental, 10% physical. Controlling emotions. Every fight. A genius we won’t see the likes of in this lifetime…

I genuinely enjoyed this interview. I don’t think Mike liked disingenuous people; that’s why it went so well, because Dick was not a phoney put-on type guy. I have seen Mike in interviews where the interviewer was outright afraid of him; in one, he told the woman not to utter another word; and she didn’t. In others, he verbally ko’d the guy; you thought he was going to get up and feed him his teeth. He didn’t appreciate, nor did he put up with, being talked down to or patronized. This interview is how he was when he liked and respected someone.

The moment where Tyson says that nobody would grab you like that if they were mugging you, and then he hugs Cavett after the crowd's reaction and you could see that Cavett was a little embarrassed when Tyson said that, that moment really shows Tyson's true character. He recognized that Cavett was a little embarrassed and gave the man a big hug right there to make him feel better.

It seems nobody dislikes Mike Tyson and honestly there's every reason to admire and love this man. He came on the boxing scene and made fans out of people who weren't even boxing fans (like myself) with his amazing speed and ferociousness never seen before and I doubt we will ever see it again. Now in his older age his philosophical views and raw honesty once again take us by surprise and fills us with excited hope. He is my most beloved and favorite celebrity... Love you Iron Mike.

This is a nice documentary about his life brownsvilleborn.com & if you type in Vice "Melo Shu Shu" on KZfaq you'll see another nice 10 min documentary on Shu with Carmelo Anthony & Danny Jacobs. My daughter use to train with Shu, my brother in law is family with melo & one of my best friend's, Big Chris, is cousins with Andre Rosier trainer of Jacob's. Those are all my peoples. Please support Shu. He's a beautiful kid and we pray he makes the 2020 Olympics. He just won the National's at 132 & he's going for the Olympic Nationals in a month or two for the Olympics. From there he will turn pro.

Cavett was very close to fighters. He was one of Ali’s best friends . Cavett had the most like able personality of any host I have seen , and a Colbert is a close second .

The point of the demonstration is to prove the principle of 'mechanics' in Aikido. It's like a Aikido 'party trick'. I did Aikido for only a short time in my teens but have used it several times to overpower people who have stepped up to fight me. It does work very well, but is not an offensive weapon at all. it is very much a defensive technique. If you think it is bullshido then a trip to a local Aikido school would be an eye opener indeed.

Karate, aikido,even taekwondo,they teach these kooky leverage tricks,with the counters to wrist grabs. I couldn't stand that part when I was in taekwondo way back in the day. I knew deep down that it was nothing more than a kooky lil trick designed to give false confidence. I knew it was utter quackery amongst the realms of Real World Street Fighting knowledge,skill, and abilities. Even before joining tkd, I remember a friend referring to that type of stuff as "Let Me", as in, Let Me show you my nice cute trick that I could use on you if you just kindly comply with me,and only just grab my wrists. I agreed with what he was saying, and I naturally felt the same way,but I joined tkd for the sake of having a healthy fitness outlet, and to show off my natural kicking abilities.
