Mike Zeck has had a very successful career as a comics artist working for a wide variety of companies and himself. This video tracks his career from Charlton to Marvel and DC and into retirement. Along the way, Zeck became the artist behind many modern classics: The first miniseries for The Punisher, Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, and many more. An artist who helped get me into comics and who drew with clean lines, dynamic layouts, specific details, and big emotions.

You gotta expect that a little bit just based on the limitations of printing technology of the period. BWS started coloring his own stuff early on, which helped in terms of a final printed product more representative of his intent, but he has admitted it would still have looked hundreds of times better with modern digital precision. Michael Golden isn't shy about expressing some of his "career dissatisfaction" even though in Marvel Fanfare he experienced far better printing quality than most newsstand line comics of the era.

Hey Chris regardless of if you think we “don’t care about” your depression, there are always going to be members of your community and in your life that very much do. I never share anything person on YT but I just want you to know you’re never alone, man. Your work is wonderful and you seem like a genuine person. Thanks for always putting in effort. Always promoting amazing work and interesting stories. And always being you dude, you’re appreciated as a person. Not just for Comic Tropes but for who your are outside of this channel. Once again I’m not trying to be all “parasocial relationship” with you, but it’s just reality. There are always people who care about you as a person.

You seem like a genuinely good dude. One that has given me hours of enjoyment on KZfaq and many more reading the comics you recommend. These videos might not be doing something grand like curing cancer or whatever. But you bring joy. You are a net positive to this world.

I used to manage a comic book store in CT back in the early 90s. Mike Zeck was a regular customer. We had a lot of writers and artists as customers since we were a suburb of New York City. Mike Zeck though stood out. He was just a regular guy who would ask questions about what everyone was excited about. So many others acted like they were rock stars. They forgot that outside of the geeky culture no one knew or cared who they were. Zeck and Jerry Ordway were the two artists who always stood out because they cared about the fans and really appreciated our support. Mike Zeck is a great artist but he is also a top human being.

Funny, me and my friends were just talking about Zeck. He's underrated especially in the cover department: Cap Annual vs Wolverine, Dethlok Cap cover, Secret Wars #1 cover, Jazz hands Spidey Secret Wars cover, Web of Spidey coming from the grave, Cap No More cover. This is all from my head. All iconic covers.

Hey, Chris. I just want you to know that I also deal with some serious issues regarding depression. And at a point when I was losing interest in the things that make me happy, you helped renew that. I discovered Comic Tropes at just the right time. You always say "Keep Reading comics." And I do. But a big part of that is because you kept me reading comics. And that's been a big help in the darker times. Sorry for rambling, but I just wanted you to know that, I hope it helps in some small way to know that.

I've been slowly reading every 616 related comic and I think Zeck's time on master of kung fu with double 0 Shang Chi is worth more than a footnote. I found he always had a excellent composition when it came to fight scenes with a really good flow panel to panel that no one at Marvel could do at the time IMO. Also sorry to hear you're still having issues with your depression, but it sounds like you have a good support system in place. Man, depression sucks. Love your videos mate, keep grinding, one foot in front of the other. The wheel turns, things get better.

Hang in there Chris! My favorite Comics Tropes episodes are when you deep dive on works you personally love. It's like having a smart, enthusiastic and yes nerdy friend who comes to visit through the computer, and I can assure you it gets ME through hard and difficult times when I see a new Comics Trope video and know you're about to show up.

Really enjoyed this one. Seems like an overall solid guy in interviews and seems pretty humble as well. Glad to hear that he's enjoying his retirement.

Great watch. Zeck was my favorite artist as a kid. Hell, I still love his work. Would love to see new work from him.

The way I deal with depression is every time I go into my dark place, I keep repeating in my mind "this is temporary, this is temporary" and when that doesn't work, the best way to cheer yourself up is to cheer someone else up.

Mike was one of my main inspirations for becoming a comic book fan. I always found his style to be strong and expressive with a great sense of movement and action. I fully agree and concur with your sentiments.😎👍

Hang in there bro. Thank you so much for this episode. I was affected exactly like you were. Absolutely love Mike Zack. He was the first artist that I consciously needed to learn what a penciler was

Keep at it with getting help for depression. Good on you for reaching out for help, you are worthy of that help and don't think for a moment you don't deserve it.

I love Mike Zeck's work. So happy you did this video. I still have a felt punisher print that I bought in the eighties. Great artist. Definitely helped defined the Marvel style of the 80s for me.

In the early 2010s I met Mike Zeck at the first comic convention I ever went to (a little con in Des Moines, Iowa.) No one else besides a friend of mine and my step dad were in line and so we just stood there for at least half an hour and talked about his work on The Punisher, Secret Wars, and Spiderman. He was so kind and seemed genuinely interested and engaged in our conversation. I don't know that I've ever had an experience with a creator quite like that one.

Excellent overview of Mike Zeck's career. I hadn't thought of it myself, but you're right that he drew a lot of people into comics.

I chose life two years ago. That stuff gets scary, dark, and heavy. No day is easy but what has helped me is just doing life moment by moment. I'm so happy you are here and you are one of my favorite KZfaq channels. I love your content. Take all the breaks you need to let yourself be healthy and do the things that bring you joy.

Mike Zeck’s art is so good. His work on Punisher, Gi Joe, and Spider-Man are some of the best art in all of comics

I was lucky enough to meet Mike at that Heroescon. My buddy got his Secret Wars 8 signed by him after we stood in the Stan Lee line getting my ASM 252 and X-Men 4 signed. That was a really special day. I also struggle with crippling anxiety and depression, and it can sometimes be a real challenge looking for that motivation to keep pushing forward, but when I think back on moments like that and the good people in our community making content like you do, it makes me want to stick around to see what's next. So thank you, Chris. We appreciate what you do and I want to remind you that you're not alone.
