I have some insight on the "do they need permission to use the brand name" thing. Short answer is no*. *It can't be in the song title (hence songs like "Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued" by Fall Out Boy, or "AKA Driver" (referring to Nyquil Driver) by They Might Be Giants), but in song lyrics they can't stop you, though they could theoretically sue for anything deemed libelous, it at the end of the day would cost far more time and resources than it's worth (though, it has happened before, with songs like "Lola" by The Kinks referencing Coke and Coke suing them, then changed the lyric to "Cherry Cola"). As far as paid placement is concerned, sometimes bands might pay to use a name (Blue Oyster Cult paid to use Godzilla), and though brands don't HAVE to pay for the name-drop in songs (sometimes it is genuinely that the artist likes the brand or the sound of the lyric of whatever), brands and producers do make deals together sometimes for product placement in song lyrics the same as in the music videos.

lyric wise with brands! no payments are made between brands and artists - generally when writing rap lyrics (any lyrics really) they rhyme so it can be played off as needing something to rhyme and even if its like something that makes sense to whatever story the lyrics convey, its not necessarily brand placement music videos however, the artist miiiight need to get permission for that

If the Bad Romance video looks cheap it's because... it is. She was BROKE when they filmed it because of ouring and costumes. Gaga had an original idea for the video which would have been much more expensive and ended up having to scrap that and film the one we know, which if you notice is all filmed in the same room.

to brand in lyrics: it depends. most of the time you just try to let it slide and don’t tell the brand about it (cause most of the time it is beneficial for them so they don’t have anything against it). had a case lately where the whole song revolves around Lego and we had to get permission for that and couldn’t use Lego in the music video (without paying for it). but it was also a whole campaign so it is complicated haha
