The guy at septa responsible for renaming the station to Middleton only to get 6 million from wawa for naming rights deserves an award for the single biggest brain move ever.

As I have heard recently, there was actually no formal naming rights deal to call the station Wawa (empahsis on "formal"). The name of the old station was Wawa before passenger service ended in 1986. It's more a partnership deal with Wawa.... Middletown Township was the entity pushing for the new station to be named Middletown, but that got squashed almost at the last minute.

I find it fitting that the first new SEPTA station since 1985 is named after Wawa, a true PA icon...what a comeback. Even more that the original station on the site closed in 1986, the year following the last new extension, the Airport Line, became a thing.

The name of the locality is Wawa, PA. The convenience store's HQ is adjacent to the station and took their name from the town. There was a previous PRR station here called Wawa.

This vid is just one big advertisement for Wawa. As capitalist as that is, at least SEPTA restored service to this area with a new station, so it’s a small price to pay for salvation Wawa fact: The Wawa business began in 1803 as an iron foundry. In 1890, George Wood, an entrepreneur from New Jersey, moved to Delaware County, Pennsylvania; it was here that he began the Wawa Dairy Farm. Wood imported cows from the British Crown dependency island of Guernsey, and bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land in the Chester Heights area

SEPTA has opened a number of infil stations since 1985 and has also extended the R2 to Newark, DE and the R5 to Thorndale (after it was cut to Downingtown). I forget the last new station, but it might be Eastwick, built on the Airport Line around 2000.

So a 19 minute walk to a actual Wawa, and it's not walkable. Not the best station. MBTA needs a Dunkin donuts station. I'd give Wawa a 6/10, because it doesn't seem 100% ready, and it has a waiting room, unlike MBTA.

A 19 minute walk is very near, to be honest. Just have a decent sidewalk, and everything will be fine.

Great video!! Oh, the back of me made a cameo at 2:15. And 3:50-something! And... 🤣🤣 Regarding the wheelchair passenger: I guess the built-in wheelchair bridge plate on that car was inoperative... they are located in the floor of the first door of each double door set. On another note, I believe the ramp at Wawa station is the longest continuously uninterrupted straight ramp on all of SEPTA. No zig-zags or turns in it.

@@MilesinTransit On the other hand, I just remembered that if it had been a set of Silverliner IV's or a push-pull set.... that puts the accessibility failure right back in again. Hopefully they put another bridge plate down at that end of the platform in the future! Thanks!

SEPTA passed out invites to all the people from Elwyn to Wawa who live along the line and had to deal with the construction to come in ahead of everyone and have a tour.

As a map nerd, I always like to inspect pedestrian access to transit stops and when I saw the complete stupidity of Wawa Station from google maps I thought “am I the only one who’s seeing this?” And the answer is a resounding no. In any case, thank you so much for this amazing story into this amazing blunder. Wawa station is, as you so rightful illustrate, the perfect example of American planning idiosyncrasies.

That made my Wednesday evening! I was in town this evening. Doylestown/Lansdale line to 30th, which is now announced as Wm Gray/30th St. station. Also discovered that the SEPTA app lists it that way. While my train had what looked like shinny new route maps, Wawa was not on there. While waiting for my train home the out bound train to Wawa arrived and the conductor loudly proclaimed it was the train to Wawa followed by Media Elwyn. Am excitedly awaiting the further installments by the way, if you want to see a really big car park, come on out to Lansdale, the one there is four levels, some 680 spaces and might have at most less than 100 cars a day.... Lansdale also boasts a free air station if you need to check the air in your tires over by the exit, it is just like the ones Wawa has at their stores.Do they have that out there?

I got a challenge for you guys: Can you 8 different modes of rail travel in the Philadelphia area in one day? NJ Transit regional, riverline, patco, BSL, Trolley, MFL, Norristown high speed, then Septa Regional. I think it would be 30th street => Pensauken => Camden=> walnut-locust => Girard and Broad => Girard and Front => 69th street => Norristown => back to 30th (maybe there's a better route or a 9th train mode I'm forgetting about)

Just a heads up: the unfinished sidewalk on Baltimore Pike is being finished as I type this. It even will have streetlights. Not sure if the sidewalk will be to Wawa or just the adjacent housing development but it will exist if you make a return trip. Also, the top floor of the parking garage is now open.
