What do you do when you need a CNC lathe but all you have is a CNC mill? You use Mill Turning! This week we create some aluminum pins on the CNC mill, but with a "twist".

CNC does a lot of things with one machine. The usefulness increases with each new job.

Good job Tom and clever use of what you have available.Re: feed rate - being a turning tool insert the manufacturer's recommendation (0.006) sounds like 'inches per revolution' to me and not IPM. So if the top speed of your mill is 4300 rpm their recommended feed rate would translate to approximately 26ipm. (As a starting point).Al

+ColchesterBridgeport You're absolutely right and I was reading it just how you described at first. Glad I got that sorted out. I stopped at 40 IPM but I think it could go even more. That .006 was the starting point for the range. I'd like to push it just hard enough to break those chips without introducing too much flex in the part. I'll keep you posted! Thank you for watching and helping clarify what I suspected I was doing wrong there. Tom Z

Hmmm, been wondering what to do with my X2 mill now that I have a larger one. :-) Nice video!

My little cnc lathe won't even more at 40ipm! ...hhmm.....or 4300rpm for that matter. I really need to get some mill turning done soon.....I'll be looking for that in fusion.....probably after I get back from break(nap) :) Thanks!! Mike

+bluehandsvideo Hi Mike! I should probably go over the Fusion part in detail as well. It was pretty close to the same thing as just doing a facing and profile operation though. Let me know if you get an error when choosing the Mill Turn option and then going to post the code... Best wishes, Tom

+Tom Zelickman (Inspiration Metalworks) I got a tube drawn, but that was all I had time for. I need to do a face cut, OD turn, ID bore, and a cutoff op. I'd probably just use MachStdMill, but since I had to switch the BOB back to the old one, it seems to have lost all the parameters.....so I need to set it up again.....but I might as well wait to do that until I put the new BOB in that's sitting here. I need to do some mig welding....which means blocking off the mill with my welding screen and table.....so I can't do much if anything with the mill until the welding is done. I really need to get the motor back on my little lathe!! lol I'll watch whatever you put up. :) Mike

Great video Tom, enjoyed the mill turning. Did you mention what speed you were running the spindle? Have fun in OH, i am sure it will be a blast.

+🔥Ramsey Customs - turbocobra Hi Gary! I started out at 500 RPM and .006 IPM (way too slow) and then moved to about 1200 RPM and 2 IPM. Finally, at the encouragement of Chuck Kidwell I cranked it up to the full 4300 RPM and used 40 IPM for the cutting rate. As long as I had decent mist coolant I didn't get any chatter at all. Talk to you soon! Tom

Instead of emailing everyone how to do it, why don't you just make a step by step video of how to do it. That is the kind of videos that will get views.
