My father was a carver and made a custom gun stock out of black walnut. It took him a long time to hand carve it but it was a real work of art. 3 foot logs 2x6 or 8 , 3feet long can be real valuable.

As an old-timer burning wood for heat, I found walnut does not burn well due to oils snd deposits an excessive tar deposit in the flue. Monitor the buildup of tars if you decide to burn. Enjoy your channel and look forward to each post.

Kiln add-on: Like the curtain separators. Get a couple sheets of styrofoam insulation and rip it lengthwise lay on top on more stickers. Lay the ends of the curtains on that. Light, cheap, waterproof.

I finally found a mission style furniture that I liked that was also easy to make. I made it out of cedar and redwood first to see if I liked it. Doring that build I also made 2 smaller tables out of red wood and cedar. I wasn't sure of the reduction. Then, I made the whole set out of red oak that I live with now. I also discovered desk design through the desk I type from. No fancy furniture in middle Montana, I looked..

John; I wanted to let you know about the bird house, it is a Martin house, and they are a seasonal bird that is very effective at mosquito control. But they work best at a 20-25 foot height minimum. Plus the Martin's will not come back to it if there is a nest from the previous year, so it needs to be on a post that can fold over and be cleaned out every year. That is why it was made with the removable top and all of the inside sections pull out. So if you want it to be effective for mosquito control you might want to make some changes. But I do like the look of it on the tree log, BTW, I really enjoy your videos and the progress around your homestead.

That walnut is beautiful! What a great haul! John should go back for the rest since you have that kiln now. you can dry those smaller pieces out and sell them to Wood Turners! We are always looking for pieces like that for the lathe. Also John is an ingenious man he should look into building a tow behind log skidder. look them up! You can tow a few logs at the same time from behind in single file. It's easier on the trails with better visibility and clearance width wise and less wear on the hydraulic rams. I guy I worked with built a few for cheap with a few hubs tire and rims from the junk yard when he was renovating his family's land years ago. For the kiln you guys can make some bo-bo Chinese Bamboo Roller Blinds out of those curtains with some pvc pipe and para cord just roll it up and down as you need to! As for moving sawdust from away from the mill area, saw a guy use his snow blower and just walk right through blowing the sawdust out of his way... just a thought if your in a hurry. I am a heavy duty cheapskate. I happen to love walnut myself and would find a way to cut into thin veneer like thickness, and laminate to other cheaper wood like pine to give people the idea the wall or what ever I made with it being a solid piece of wood.... in retrospect, it might even warp less. Way cool save of nice tree. Its hard to not get sidetracked when seeing something like this and just switch into making pretty things instead.. congrates on home build, your far ahead of where most might try to get for the size of crew

Watch were you dispose of that walnut sawdust. It is toxic to hoofed animals for sure. it is also not good for gardens either. Beautiful wood you have there. Every board has a story to go with it now, not just lumber store boards.

I'm old and I played with a lot of loud toys when I was young so my hearing isn't up to speed but I could have sworn that I heard you say something about turning the limbs into fire wood???? I am on the verge of crying. There has got to be a gunsmith or a cane maker somewhere who would give their first born for those limbs not to mention $$$. Hoping I heard wrong.

I ran a fabric store foe 10 years and a roller shade came to mind for the bottoms of your hanging fabrics. They would add weight.

Hi guys, What a find on the side of the road. Beautiful timber for furniture, especially for inlays and contrast work. It is good that you have your solar kiln up and running. It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable difference in the walnut seasoned in the barn vs that in the solar kiln. The barn is going to be so useful for lumber storage when you are cutting and drying timber for the house and outbuildings. With regard to your Stihl chainsaw, I notice a couple of comments regarding a clogged spark arrestor filter. It might need replacing, but the main symptom of a clogged arrestor is the saw will not rev up (because the combustion gasses can't escape quick enough). The issue you seem to have is poor performance at low revs (idle). In a 2-stroke engine, this can be caused by a number of things, the most common being; dirty/old fuel, worn piston rings, scored cylinder/piston, clogged low speed carb jet, incorrectly adjusted LS carb jet, poorly fitting/leaking carb gasket/insulator, crank case separation (leaking) or leaking crank shaft seals. From your comments in previous videos, you have check most of the above list, with the exception of leaks in the crank case and shaft. These are easy enough to check. With both the intake and exhaust ports blocked, apply air pressure ( 5 to 7 PSI ) through the spark plug hole, apply soapy water to the probable areas and look for bubbles. Blocking the ports can be as easy as putting a piece of inner tube between the muffler and exhaust port and re tighten, and the same for the carburettor. If no leaks are found, I'd go down the carburettor replacement route. Thanks for the great entertainment, and good luck with the footings. Cheers, Guys

The answer to the EPA saw is to purchase an after market carb for less than $35.00 and takes about 30 minutes. Farmtec is the supp;ier I trust.

When you were pulling the logs out and you were pulling sideways with the tractor with the loader (grapple) that high in the air it kinda made me cringe a little. Check the spark arrest screen in the exhaust. They plug easily and will make your saw run bad.

A logger once told me that when they top the tree they cut below the first 4” limb for the maximum use of the log. Unless of course there is a bend.

John, there is a way to fix the stihl epa saw. It simply involves changig the carb. Get an after market carb froom Ebabay for about 20 dollars.

Looks fantastic! We also milled a black walnut that had uprooted and it looks amazing. We have a sugar maple down now and plan to use it for our countertops. There’s nothing like seeing those black walnut slabs appear…

The idle speed on that saw is adjustable. There is a small plug over the adjustment screw. Remove the plug. do the adjustment, and all is good. (you do not need to reinstall the Plug)

Check to see if the spark arrestor in the muffler is plugged up. That's a common problem with newer small engines.

BTW yes, some of the milling gets "long-winded". but then WE need to know it isn't all done in an hour. I know! We did all of the interior of our house from studs inward and I think we were finished after 14 years, my wife said 18 years. Of course, I was working full time then and we were raising 5 kids, and some Angus cattle.

Hey folks. Another great video. Good job. Was curious about whether you are sealing the ends of those boards before drying. Even a coat of paint will help avoid end checks. At least reduce their length. It would be a shame to needlessly cut the useful length of those boards.

Bet the POSTED sign figures into the reason the tree was cut . Around my part of the world the power company notifies the property owner even if the tree is on the power company right way

That black walnut was a great find! You might want to look at that bottom crotch you left out there. If it hasn’t rotted, thats where all the figure and fleck is. Gorgeous when slabbed for table tops etc.

High guys. Love your video's although they are a little long, but it's your show to do what you want. Meg is certainly a great help to you John, also glad to see you are slowly bringing the girls in to help out when possible. I did the same for both my Son and Daughter and it has helped them throughout their lives so far. John, just a suggestion, but, you have a lot of slab wood and cut offs laying about and certainly some of them could be used to lay your logs and lumber on to keep it out of the dirt. Thereby helping to ease the time used to sharpen both your bandsaw and your chainsaws. I have helped several guys here where I live by tailing their saws and they never put a blade into their logs with out sweeping them with a heavy broom. Hope this helps. you need a log Dolly to help transport your longer logs, on your doors if you made your pipes a drop style pin rather than the loose pipes, less chance of losing them , less bending over

I would have slabbed the whole log, not turned it at all. Once you decide what you are going to do with it, then trim it how you want, you get less waste that way.

Not a fan of black walnut; too funeral, victorian, dark. You say it dries purple? No accounting for taste i guess though as a freebie it's got to be considered. Nice use of the drone during retrieval. Got to help the small birds somehow. They seem to be on the decline here in the UK for birdflu reasons, cat decimation, lack of habitat - is it the same where you are too!?
