In this video you will see how to repair a M18 Milwaukee battery at 18 Volt 5 Amps , these lithium batteries have several problems, most common problem are usually unbalanced batteries.
On the video problem is solved in two ways, one way is the slow which is to charge the 5 batteries separately, and the other way and the most difficult is with two types of balancers, one is active balance board and the other load balance board, with this way we can stabilize all the battery voltages at the same level, so that the M18 pcb board can accept the batteries and give access for safe charging.
This problem usually occurs when the batteries do not work often, so some batteries get self-discharge and then have different voltages between them.

@@alainflores4075 No this is not the same issue I had. My 9.0 would not charge 2 out of the 4 cells (so even after the Milwaukee charger would be done charing and show green lights, I only had 1/2 a full battery charge). Yes, I was able to charge the 2 cells that won't charge on the Milwaukee charger with the individual charger. I spoke too soon as this did not fully solve my issue though. The problem is that now my Milwaukee charger will only charge 3 of the 4 cells (so 1 cell is sitll not charging on the Milwaukee charger). Not sure if its the battery pack itself or if it is the specific cell that is bad or what. Hope this helps. If I get that one non-charging cell issue figured out I will update.

So many companies do not want to replace or repair electronics or batteries, they just want you to buy more instead. I wonder if the manufacturer/seller even opened the battery for inspection. No one cares to protect their reputation anymore for the quality of their products. If you check, you will find that they employ a quality department but fail to catch the things that plague their batteries the most. Are they really checking their products?

With this type of cell if it drops below that voltage the cell is probably damaged and unsafe to use. I revived the battery slowly to 19V (3.8V per cell now, just checked but flashing red led) from the two outer pins 21V max i think. But it's flashing the 1st LED red. Is there. a reset for the bms? You should try to leave the small balancer inside the battery otherwise the weak cells will continue to die first and power off earlier then necessary, either that or ditch the weak cells unless you want a tool with short battery life. I would have liked to see your individual battery cell voltages during the discharge around 15.5V. Oh, you did do that, well not too bad on this pack but 2nd from the end was getting a bit lazy.

Thanks. Same issue and two of the parallel cells were near half volts. I externally charged those two and had same flashing light issue. Was about to scrap battery as a conversion with new BMS but found your methods in this video. I think I can find the balancers in your repair process. Do you have links on them with a nice description of the basic functionality? Also… do you have a theory on why the cells got out of balance? My guess fine dust caused partial failure of the BMS and the cells drifted on charge level. Thorough cleaning of the BMS restored functionality. Do you thinks the on board BMS would have corrected the balancing over a few charge / discharge cycles or is your external method simply faster and better?

Hi.. after balance put your battery on charger to initialise the protection board (reset) -Milwaukee Battery boards didn't have balance mode. -Unbalanced bayteries causes from 1)high discharge rate output by power tools 2) high temperatures use and 3) absence of low voltage protection from the board.

Are you able to let me know what the balencer lights indicate? I have noticed that at times I have no lights on completely, just a series of strong sequential flashes over the board. (I don't think its a fault code) This happens for hours at a time and no more balancing occurs. However the same lights flash (as seen in your video when you solder the board on) when there are solid lights which turn on and off periodically and balancing occurs. Thanks

Capacity was calculated by: Wh (found after putting battery under load until its depleted) DIVIDED by Wh (watt hour of battery per spec) How do we know battery spec? Voltage x amps. So M18 with 5 Amps is 18 volts TIMES 5 amps. 90 Watt So his 74,78 Wh DIVIDED by 90 W is 0,83 which is 83 procent. Neat. Please correct me about watt/hour thingy.

They're different types. The first one (Active Balancer) is capable of dealing with larger balancing currents, so when the cell voltages a far apart, this gets them into the ballpark of being near each other fairly fast but not with great accuracy; which is where the second one comes in. The second type (Load Balancer) will balance the cells with greater accuracy, but it will take much longer to do this. Hence why he uses the one then two approach. Technically you could just use the second one, but it will take much longer to achieve cell balance than using the one then two approach.

This is very impressive. However, if one does not possess the technical equipment and knowledge shown in this video, it is not a cost effective solution to the problem. Just buy a new battery. Milwaukee provides a five-year warranty on their batteries. Beyond that, you are probably better off with a new unit anyway.

This is meant to teach you the skills, why throw away a perfectly good battery, the equipment needed is less than 1/4th the cost of one new battery. look around the house at just how many rechargeable battery items the average homeowner has. it's not just Milwaukee batteries, Dewalt, Bosch etc.

With such expensive battery packs, why doesn't Milwaukee incorporate load-balancing circuitry into their battery circuit board in the first place??? I have had 2 batteries do this. I didn't know how to fix it, so I was basically out $150 worth of batteries. :-(

This is just my opinion, but the M18 BMS does balancing and it does work most of the time. I recently checked a bunch of my M18 batteries (1.5, 2.0, 5.0, 6.0 HO, total of 8) and their cells were within 0.01 V, which is really good considering the packs are several years old (2-3 years old) and were heavily used for a long time (I was a carpenter in Alberta, Canada, using the tools in temperatures ranging from -30 to +30). However if they do happen to get out of balance too much (whatever the underlying reason), the BMS somehow does not count with this scenario and it only gets worse from thereon. I did have a 9.0 HD battery that was acting funky and it turned out it was a similar scenario - cell #1 charged to about 60 %, cell #2 about 75 %, and the rest 100%. I would not even notice it from using the battery itself, until one day I did realize it took only an hour to fully charge the 9 Ah battery, which realistically on the OEM charger (3 A) should take roughly 3 hours. Only then I did took it apart, manually charged the first two cells and it seems to work normally now. Also worth noting is that the 9 Ah batteries are notoriously known for their unreliability (their rating on Home Depot is terrible), I wonder if it's always the case of them simply going out of balance.

I also once bought the M18 High Impact wrench (the first generation) with 4.0 batteries which are not even made anymore, and they must have been at least 6+ years old and HEAVILY used (the tool came from the Calgary's Fire Department). Even them being old, they still charged and worked well for a 4 Ah battery. Unfortunately I have not took them apart and measured them, just tried they can go through a full cycle in a M18 FUEL Skilsaw and then sold them.
