Which is why my mother disliked the show; she explained it pointed again and again to people who were self-serving to the point of cruelty, though not in every episode. But Mom also disliked Laurel and Hardy films because she could only think of who would have to clean up the messes. Perhaps that was natural for a mother of three sons born within 5 years of each other.

The "scriptwriters," weren't Shakespearean, were they?😆 This was a fluff show. But it lasted three seasons and people loved it! Sherwood was a television pioneer of family rated, good pure fun. And if he said it jokingly or not, it fits and makes good sense. You can't really say that about most screenwriters and produces of the stuff on television these days.

I vaguely remember seeing this episode on rerun in the 1980s. McMurry's explanation that the sailor died is what is known as a "retcon." Something he just made up on the fly after the fact to cover up for the blooper.

Sherwood Schwartz's book is correct that the guy who played Johnny (actor Michael Whitney) died of a heart attack but the creator of this video seems to be assuming that this is some secret plot line of the Gilligan's Island episode referring to the *character* Johnny who died. The difference of course is that the actor died in 1983 while the Gilligan's Island episode was made in 1965. I suppose it's also possible that Schwartz jokingly attributed Whitney's fate to Johnny when talking about these matters many years after the fact. (I haven't seen Schwartz's book and don't know when he wrote it or published it.)

I’ve always found it hard to believe that every single guest star that came to the island never reported the castaways. Even if they were criminals, they could’ve left a note with the coordinates from the skipper, and then could’ve disappeared. I guess when the professor was once asked if he could build a nuclear reactor with a bunch of coconuts. Why couldn’t he build a raft? His response was because we’d all be out of a job.

They should have cast a navigator who was in his 50s or 60s. Then the explanation would have been more plausible. It makes you wonder how they found the island in the first place. Also, it doesn't make sense for only one sailor and such a small boat and not telling anyone their planned course in case something happens. Given the wackiness of Gilligan's Island, I don't know why they just wouldn't have had the sailor get hit in the head and suffer amnesia. Didn't have to kill the guy. After all, Mary Ann got hit in the head and thought she was Ginger. Why not just hit the guy in the head and he can't remember? Even killing the guy has its problems. Sailors use nautical charts. There would have been evidence of the course they took. Who cares? It was a silly TV show. They could have had them rescued at the end of every episode and then put them back on the island for the next with no explanation. South Park killed Kenny and he would just come back.

I’d guess because a media was used several times. This changes it up and adds to the reality of it. They couldn’t have used “getting lost at sea” since he brought Erika back. And he couldn’t have drowned because he was a sailor. Haha a coronary works!

Doing this type of KZfaq work, I have found that most people watch the shows in syndication. Syndication does not show every single episode. It shows about half of them. So, while many people think they have seen most of the episodes, this is not true. I was surprised after studying these shows how many episodes of different shows I actually didn’t see. Thank you so much for the support and watching my videos!

I didn't know that they ever explained this, although I had read about this "plot hole" online! But if you ask me, it does make perfect sense. It's still a plot hole as the boat was too small to travel to the island unsupported and they didn't tell anybody where the island was. That being said, I don't think it's that big of a deal, this is just kind of a cool detail.

When I recently watched that rerun (BTW, nothing says Hungarian like the name Erica Tiffany Smith), I also thought "Of course SHE knows squat about navigation but what about the sailor who brought her there"? I'm also of the opinion that Sherwood Schwartz was joking about the sailor dying. Plot holes happen. But I think an explanation more in keeping with the lighthearted series would have been that the sailor washed overboard in the storm and wound up on another uncharted island.

There were a whole slew of crime and action series back in the 60’s. People were dying all the time. _The Wild, Wild West, The Avengers, Burke’s Law, The Man From Uncle, Dragnet, The Outer Limits_ Even the comedy _Get Smart_ had people dying in it.
