I think the machine is real. I think what Nolan was trying to do was to recreate the feel of the early 1900s, when it really did seem like science could do *anything*. To do this, rather than have people astounded by a real-world technology (which would seem quaint and archaic to us now), he had something that follows Clarke's Law (Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic). Thus, this isn't what it appears to be at first (a period drama/thriller) and is, in fact, a science fiction movie.

A movie that is even better on rewatch. Every scene means something and possibly several different things. For how confusing the plot structure is, it still feels like everything is making sense, and you're learning everything you need to when you need to. So expertly crafted plus David Bowie as Nikola Tesla!

It's my favorite Nolan movie and might objectively be his best because of what you mentioned. The plot structure is nonlinear but it flows perfectly. Whenever it jumps around it does so in the most perfect way. First time I saw it I rewatched it two more times the same weekend. It's amazing how obvious the two brothers seem on a rewatch and how easy it is to tell them apart when it was far from obvious during an initial watch. One is more calculating, more reserved, the other is more impulsive, a bit of a hothead. And it's the hothead who couldn't take even his own brother's advice to leave Angier alone, to not go back to his show, who walks right into Angier's trap and ends up framed for murder. It's one of my top 3 favorite movies.

Another movie about the power of magic is The Illusionist, which is a kind of period romance. On the subject of Christian Bale, he's been everything, including a quirky financial genius in The Big Short and a plucky (and singing) young newspaper delivery boy in Newsies. (You realize that was the great music superstar David Bowie in the role of Tesla, right?) Thanks for that ending!

Of all the Nolan movies I somehow like this one the most. Its so intriguing and engaging the whole time, and the layers are done beautifully (Nolan loves layers). To me he perfected the layer thing with this one; the other thing, time (which he also loves), he perfected with Inception. And you're right about Christian Bale. He does diverse roles plus he selects them so well. About your question: the correct answer is Harry Houdini. He's the goat of magic, and to which everyone compares. But David Blaine comes to mind in recent years.

I think I’ve told you this before, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time. You can watch it ten more times and still be amazed. Nolan knocked it out of the park on this one and for it to be one of his earlier films… that in itself was magic. Nice teaser at the end. 😉

Even though this isn't my favorite movie or favorite Nolan film, I think it is Nolan's best film and honestly one of the best films ever made, not to mention one of the best acted films ever. The writing was incredible. The performances were astounding. Hugh's face after he cracks his leg, when he see Borden under the stage about to go up; perfection. The ending monologue and both Hugh's and Bale's performance during them; perfection. And most of all my favorite line in the whole film. "You always were the better magician, we both know that. But whatever your secret was, I mean you have to agree; mine is better.." Absolute perfection in writing and performance.

The fact that Nolan gives away the ending early in the film really drives home the point of Michael Caine's narration at the end. We see the bird getting flattened and there's no way to do that trick without killing a bird and bringing in "its brother". When Borden is outside of her apartment and then is suddenly inside of it. It's impossible. He's got a twin. But it isn't really until the very end that we are willing to accept what's been happening all along, and it's been right in our faces the entire time. We want to be fooled. Hands down my favorite Nolan movie, if not my favorite movie period.

@@megafan2000 If you’ll permit me I will tell you how I wound up in that seat. I was asked to give David’s production crew a tour of our lab. The request came out of the blue from a friend who knew the crew. They gave me a ticket to the show later that night after the tour. When I was giving the tour they seemed a bit uninterested until I told a story about how picky our boss was. Well that was something with which they could relate. A trick either works or it doesn’t and so David was concerned about every detail of a trick. He constantly works in one big trick and one small trick into his show. So if you see his show 6 months later the show you saw would be almost completely new tricks. David does 500 shows a year so you can imagine the demands he has on his staff. One has to love the work and love to work to do that many shows. I hope to catch his Las Vegas show one day. I understand it is spectacular.

I wish he could release those but I assume there's tons of copyright involved with the music he used. I did manage to find someone on eBay with a compilation of all of them so I binged those on my flight and finally got to see the few specials that I missed as a kid .

The greatest magician of all time is Harry Houdini. Not necessarily because he has performed the best tricks, or the most complex, but because his name has become synonymous with the practice of magic itself. In one way or another you hear his name all around, even nearly 100 years after his death, people still speak his name with awe and reverence. I feel his legacy will continue to outlive modern magicians, and that's what makes him the greatest.

Nolan even consulted Copperfield for this film.

I love so many of Nolan's movies, from Memento to Insomnia to his Batman movies to Inception, but this one is my favorite. It fools so many people, and yet it tells you exactly what is happening every step of the way. It's very much like the trick in the movie. You don't want to believe that's all there is to it. So I've been an amateur sleight of hand artist since I was in high school. I know more about magic and magician's than most people, but less than most practicing professional magicians. Prior to this movie, the terms "pledge," "turn," and "prestige" weren't in common usage and generally still aren't. Occasionally people will refer to "the prestige" as the payoff of an effect, but it's not seeped into the vocabulary. Mostly it's just called an effect or trick, the beginning is called set up or prepping, the words you say are called patter, and so on. Learning how to do them used to be as easy as finding a good sleight of hand book, but now it's as easy as a google search... but as the movie says, "You don't really want to know." Most magic tricks are done with methods that are either so simple or so mind numbingly uninteresting that knowing how its done doesn't add to the trick. It mostly makes people go, "Oh... is that it?" Keep your wonder, but also keep in mind it's just a trick. That having been said, with the exception of Tesla's machine, virtually everything in this movie can be done for real. Magicians were consulted in the making of it, and a particularly famous one is actually in it. Ricky Jay was one of the preeminent experts in throwing cards, as well as a very skilled close up and stage magician. He plays the magician Batman and Wolverine are assisting when Wolverine's wife dies... before they meet Black Widow. I'm a very broken person because I can't not see them as those people sometimes... The bullet catch is a very real, and very dangerous, magic trick that has been done at various points in history. At least a dozen magicians have died doing it when something went wrong, though none of them was ever shown to be the result of a magical feud. The most famous one was a magician named Chung Ling Soo, a stage name for Scottish descended William Robinson. At the time, performing as an "Asian" was in vogue and he performed in silk robes with Chinese scrolls on stage... it was the early 20th century. He died in 1918 when a spectator was asked to jam down the powder of a flintlock pistol with a magic wand and some of the wand snapped off in the barrel. The spectator either didn't notice or thought it was part of the trick and... it didn't end well. Also, twins (and sometimes triplets) are used frequently to achieve effects in stage magic. Teleportation is (currently) impossible, but having someone who looks the same and is dressed the same is a pretty inexpensive way to sell it.

When Hugh Jackman’s character asks Christian Bale’s character what knot he tied he truly didn’t know the answer to that question because it was his twin brother who was the one who did it. And yet the twin brother never gave up the secret. Another example of their tremendous sacrifice like Bale’s character said at the end to Hugh after he shot him. A lot of sacrifices and that it was never easy. The Prestige is in my top 3 Nolan films

Angier was cloned/duplicated (or is what 95% of people have concluded), I saw someone trying to say differently on Patreon. But after Angier (or his clone) drowned in the tank, he was brought to the morgue where cutter identified his real body. Yet there was still a body in a tank at the very end of the movie where Angier was shot by Borden, so there's at least 3 bodies. Angier who got shot by Borden, the body at the morgue and the body in the tank. All the other tanks implied they were all filled with bodies. Angier thought Borden was dead, he didn't make a bunch of tanks to trick Borden, cause he thought he was dead, so there would be no point. Those were real tanks with real bodies.

I hope you have a Happy New Year, Jen! This was a fun reaction! I think I was about 10 or 11 when I saw this movie. I remember it was on a day I was home sick with a fever, but I can't remember exactly when. At the time, I found the movie confusing and slow, and didn't like it at all. Your reaction isn't the first I've seen for this movie but having seen a couple of reactions to it now, I think maybe being sick had something to do with my difficulty following the story. It seems now to have great twists, but it basically takes you through everything step by step and gives you one reveal at a time so it's fun and surprising, but still very digestible. I enjoyed your reaction (and the other I saw) and also enjoyed what I saw of the movie in the reactions. This movie might be worth watching again myself with a clear head. This movie demonstrates the problem with a classic science-fiction transporter: to the best of our understanding, once the process was finished, you wouldn't have moved the original object, but rather would have copied it like a fax machine does. One interesting note here is that, the way the trick was set up, the original always dies and the copy lives, so by the end of a movie, the character is a fax of a fax of a fax of a fax... It makes you wonder how accurate that copying process really was and if things had gotten scrambled by the end of the film!

Also, Tesla was at best a moderate player in a developing field, who was also batshit insane and made laughable claims. He is beloved by people who are unable to differentiate between their own fantasies and reality. This film, whilst certainly good and entertaining, is perhaps the Ur example of the fetishisation of a crazy man. What happens when a legit innovator is also a delusional paranoid nutter? Commander Bond...the ending after the credits roll....absolutely sublime. Had to watch it twice. Reaction perfection. Might I suggest....if you have not seen it.... A Shock to the System 1990. Michael Caine is simply beyond in it. You'll understand. Cheers!

🎩 As has been mentioned, if you liked this, you might even like "The Illusionist" (2006) more. A similar twist-ending, and it doesn't involve any dead birds. 😎👍

My pick for best magician ever: Max Malini. His hands were smaller than most people’s, so he couldn’t do sleight of hand, which made his tricks even more surprising. One time, Max was picking up his dry cleaning and noticed a politician’s suit was also there. He paid to have a playing card sewed into the lining of the suit and then waited months to get in the same room as that guy, who happened to be wearing the same suit. Max did a card trick, and the Prestige at the end was the card sewed into the guy’s suit.

This movie really makes you think and it wasn't until the third time I watched it when I saw things very differently. The movie sets up the rules of magic to the audience by giving us the behind the scenes tricks of the trade. We quickly establish that all magic is an illusion and trickery. Then halfway through the movie Nolan turns everything on it's head by introducing us to "real" magic and this is where I and many others fall into the trap. The only "real" magic is tesla's machine. The scenes of Tesla's machine is only in Angiers diary and Angiers diary is an UNRELIABLE narration. If you believe the machine works then as the monologue at the end says.... "Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled" Magic is rad 😉👍
