the center color being black is correct. you're working with pigment which doesn't work the same way as light. when you combine the 3 primary colors of LIGHT (red blue and green) together you get white yes, but pigment isn't light. Pigments reflect specific wavelengths of white light back outward while absorbing all the other colors of light, which is why they appear colorful. if you mix the 3 primaries of pigments (cyan magenta and yellow) together, what you get is a mixture that reflects back no light, thus making it black. This is actually the reason why printers have a black ink cartridge that is seperate from the color cartridge. Black is the most common color printed on paper, so if you didn't have a seperate black ink cartridge you would run out of ink really fast, or even end up printing in colors that aren't black as one color runs out before the others

This means that they subtract and add light to the environment, respectively. Printer ink does not emit light, unlike a computer, so to show a certain color it has to remove light. Removing cyan, magenta, and yellow from (ambient) white light makes black.

shout out to the comment spooklez reads at 7:43 for being wrong, RGB (computer moniters) are additive and make white, CMY and K for key (printers) are subtractive and make black, Red, Blue and Yellow are subtractive and make a shorty brown or purple, and will give death glares to art teachers who teach those to anyone in grade 4 and up. I took a graphic design class for two years and am NOCTI certified this is the hill I will die on.

Hey, Jordan. You probably won't see this comment, but I just want to apologize for the misunderstanding the other day. I realized I misworded the map recommendations, which made them seem very disingenuous, and it probably didn't help that I did it more than once. I just really enjoy watching people play and react to our maps; it really makes both my and my co-creator's day. I'm also glad you're playing maps again because it really benefits the map community. The streams are also super fun to watch, so keep up the good work. Hopefully this clears some things up. 👍

whoever said the middle is supposed to be white is wrong they're thinking of additive colour like with computer monitors and photoshop but this games system is based off of subtractive colour which is how painting and printers work

I find myself wishing that last level required one to syringe an area after painting it, because that would be an interesting mechanic; all it needed was one less cyan paint

The way that I think of colors is in terms of additive and subtractive combinations. With additive, you are adding light together, which is the case for monitors, TVs, and all other light sources. These use the RGB color wheel, and when all are combined, you end up with white. With subtractive, you are removing light, usually by combining material properties. This is the case for pigments, including paint, colored pencils, and printers. The primary colors for subtractive coloration is CYMK, with the K mostly being used to help get deeper blacks. The reason this can often be confusing is because many people are taught that the primary colors are Red, Yellow, and Blue, which is just completely wrong. It combines RGB and CYMK into a model that doesn't work for either additive *or* subtractive coloration, and just serves to make things more confusing

You made the last level so hard on yourself. The little area behind spawn could have been made cyan, and the little patch in the center room could have been the syringed so you wouldn’t have to keep going back and forth

This map makes me think of a DS game I used to play all the time called De Blob. You're a blob of paint and you pick up and mix colors to paint the environment

You know I think I might actually go try to play the map myself before finishing the video. This is a first for me. I shall be back to report my experience! I have finished! Very very cool. Challenging but not horrifically so, which is great because I typically have a pretty early peak when it comes to challenges lol. The end was very abrupt which was a lil unsatisfying but either way. Very cool. :)

Fun fact: red is not a primary color. You can make it by mixing yellow and magenta, which are primary colors themselves. For light (additive) the primary colors are red blue and green, while for pigments (subtractive) it's magenta, cyan, black, white, and yellow, for sciency art theory reasons I've long since forgotten about.

The reason pigment and light doesn't work the same, is that they do. As confusing as that sounds, understand that an object you look at is every colour EXCEPT what you see. So a "white" object is reflecting white (or all colours) and is itself black. A "red" object is reflecting red light, and is itself all colours except red, or more accurately, all colours except those your eyes can read together as "red".
