My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
Hey Drone Gang! Well…..this was fun as all hell.
In this episode I give a pretty brutally honest review of the top 3 features of the DJI Mini 3 Pro: obstacle avoidance, D-CineLike color profile & the active track modes, but in the end….this little flying camera is a creation machine I don’t think I’ll ever part with.
I’m leaving soon for a 1 year adventure across India so having a highly capable SUPER COMPACT flying camera is my most prized possession, along with my drum sticks & flask.
[wicked grin.]
The Mini 3 is my tool of choice for this challenge.

“Creativity is not the motivation of action, creativity is the result of action.” - WADE DAVIS. ….this quote is truly one of the most meaningful statements to me. Trying to generate a full time income on KZfaq is an interesting endeavor. Having to ALWAYS be creative AND productive. Many times I’m not feeling creative, so I won’t take action. But that statement by my mentor Wade Davis says: action is the turnkey ingredient, NOT creativity. That was the opposite of my thinking, conventional thinking. Feeling creative or not, …..always be working on your craft: experiment, be playful, ignore results, collaborate, reinterpret, ….anything…but JUST KEEP MOVING. Thank you Wade.

You're the Bob Ross of video editing :) Love your happy go lucky nature of both commentary and video editing. 100% correct regarding the use of Normal vs D-CineLike, the later is ONLY useful in very low light situations and even then it's marginal. Tracking for moving sucks but if you lock onto the ground or a larger still object you can get decent freestyle tracking. Quick shots is fairly useful for most things though. Obstacle avoidance in active track does work for down, forward, & backwards. It's usually a hinderence though if you are aware of your environment and it will block a lot of great shots when in close proximity to a subject.

Ive had the mini 3 pro for about 4 months now, having upgraded from the mini1, then 2. I love it and don't feel the need for any further upgrading. It has slightly longer arms and maybe that's why it feels like a more solid, stable pro style drone when in flight, and yes, the controller is wonderful.

Not a software expert but it seems there are 2 improvements that probably would not be very hard for DJI to do: (1) give us waypoints in normal filming mode. (How hard could it be if they already come with hyperlapse?) and (2) give us cruise control . . . I suspect DJI may be holding back to avoid cutting into Mavic 3 sales . . .

@TedNemeth
@TedNemeth 9 ай бұрын
hey David! “Honest Ted” here……if I had the money i would buy a Mini 4 just to create some test episodes that gets lots of clicks and hopefully attract some new people to our community here. But it’s physically/spiritually/neurologically impossible for me to care less about settings and specs. I’m so happy with my Mini 2, I never need another drone. But I bought a Mini 3 Pro just to create episodes that get attention. But that Mini 3 Pro really is a fantastic drone: i love how quiet it is. And the night footage is super clean. Stable. And that RC controller is AMAZING. I definitely don’t regret buying the M3P. At some point my channel will be big enough for DJI to start sending me free products to test. Then I can take super crazy risky shots and when I crash it I can say “sorry”. “Please send another”. I’m actually thinking of buying an old DJI Trello and starting a new KZfaq channel with videos only from that drone. Really challenge my cinematography skills. I bet I could craft some SICK shots and really have fun with a little $100 flying camera. Anycrap. Thanks for being part of the community David! Any specific topics you’d like me to cover in an upcoming episode?

Greetings Ted, thank you very much for your note and powerful point of view. So right on! I totally understand and celebrate the beauty of the creative process and its importance in creating breathtaking cinematography as our dominant aspiration, positioning specs, features and speeds as toolbox tech. Consider me as an appreciative apprentice. :-) As for upcoming topics, I really appreciate following your journey of discovery and lessons you are learning. Many thanks!!

Actually you can get quite a lot of additional dynamic range out of the mini3pro, the workflow is pretty specific though. It requires you to shoot at the exact settings suggested by Paul Leeming and his LUTs. But the results are noticeably better. Not to the point that they make a Mavic 3 obsolete, but a fair step up from the normal mode. However, D-Cinelike was historically an afterthought, the mini3pro initially shipped without it and it was later introduced via firmware upgrade. Reason was that engineering at the time did not think they could make the limited chip process 10bit footage properly, but they eventually made it work. Just record in H.264 with that, H.265 is a bit too much at the same time and can lead to stuttering, at least it used to when I tried it a while ago. But in the end, it will always be cinematography first and foremost what makes footage great.
@TedNemeth
@TedNemeth Жыл бұрын
Hey buddy. Many thanks for commenting. I hear great things about Mr Leeming’s LUTs. I had no idea he has a workflow for the Mini 3 Pro. I’m super curious what it is and why it works. I truly don’t care about more dynamic range, especially if it’s more work (I believe in minimalism / kinda like Occams Razor but for creativity) But I always want to know why something works. Will look into it. Thank you!

Question, wouldn’t the advantage of D cini like come into to play if you were trying to match color with a different camera?
@TedNemeth
@TedNemeth 10 ай бұрын
hey brother thank you for watching. so this is my opinion: theoretically….i agree with you. But in reality the d-CineLike color profile is NOT a true log profile. It’s barely flat at all. Therefore I see no advantage to using it and burning all that time to try to restore the exposure & colors back to they way they were when being filmed. WHICH….you’re just guessing at. You’re just moving around sliders in ur editing program until the footage looks good. But it’s not accurate. Unless you have THE actual DJI conversion LUT for D-CineLike. I ran a pole on my channel asking how many people had that LUT. Zero.

Careful, it's illegal to do any night flying in India. They also have a really low max altitude, like 25 meters or something, but I think DJI will automatically set that for you. They are very strict about the drone laws there and people have gone to jail over them, so be careful! And if the military coup and civil war in Myanmar is over by then, consider adding it onto your trip. Myanmar is sandwiched between India and Thailand, and is the most amazing country I've ever been to. Or at least it was, before the coup 😞

@@TedNemeth hey Ted, well, while it's become safer for me to venture outside these days, monsoon season also just started creeping in this last month and half or so, so we've had some amount of rain every day for weeks now. I did see 7 rainbows in one section of the sky the other day at sunrise though, it was like a psychedelic experience and sadly it only lasted a few seconds. I've never seen anything like that in my life, and would have killed for some drone footage of it.

Oh shit.. Ted, how did you loose the footage?! Very sorry to hear that! Thanks for another hugely entertaining video! 🙏 I have a question and possibly a tip for something you shouldn't do with the Mini 3..I was trying to get rid of the sensors underneath so I can fly very closely things without it jumping altitude so I put tape over them which I've done before on my Mavic 2. Big mistake, it immediately just started gaining altitude without any input (which makes sense), luckily I could grab it before it ended up in orbit! Any tricks on how to turn off the downward facing sensors?

@TedNemeth
@TedNemeth 4 ай бұрын
hey Jeff! it all comes down to money. If you are one of those rich people i hear about and a few hundred dollars more is like nothing….then get the Mini 4. Why not. [WARNING PERSONAL OPINION HERE:] ….but do NOT think anyone needs the added specs of the Mini 4 Pro. All these little spec bumps are just marketing. You can put a Mini 2 in the hands of a very experienced cinematographer and they will get MUCH better footage than a $16,000 Inspire 3 drone in the hands of a beginner or even an intermediate. Specs do not matter. The only thing that matters is cinematography skills. I do not need a Ferrari to go to town to buy some milk. But I still want one.

But I do want the one that's going to give me the best signal for long distance flights, I've heard good and bad about the pro and not enough vids on KZfaq about the mini 3 connection to really have a good determination of wich one has the best connection in longer range flights so I don't know😅🤙. *update I ended up getting the mini 3 basic model flymore combo and it's what I was hoping for so I'm good with my choice. I just knew I wouldn't use the majority of features that the pro has anyway. Just vids and pics is all I'm interested in and I want to fly the drone myself to get the shots. Flying itself stuff sounds boring to me, also if anyone is interested the mini 3 base can travel a long long ways like 10km long ways out with battery plus and make it back.
