Mini F56 Genuine Union Jack Tail-lights Retrofit for Halogen

Hi Everyone!
This is a video that shows you how to retrofit the genuine Union Jack tail-lights on a Halogen equipped mini F56. This tutorial includes the following steps:
Removing the halogen lights,
Swapping pin 1 to 5 in the light connector (not required if you already have LEDs)
Installing the Union Jack Light
Coding out cold and warm, voltage monitoring with Bimmercode and a Vgate adapter
Coding the BDC in expert mode to allow the lights to light up correctly with only 5 pins (you must do this if you originally have halogen lights so that the new Union jacks work to work properly)
Please note the coding and pin swapping is not required for the aftermarket lights with the control modules, only for the genuine mini lights :)

Thanks for this, great help in installing the same lights on my 2015 F56. Still managed to break the same clip as you as I completely forgot about your warning for this - may try and plastic weld back on but like you the gap looks the same compared to a working clip. Thanks again, video was a life saver especially when explaining how to unclip the lights from the inside.

Curious - did you do the wire swap? I have a 2015 F55 5 door and didn't have to do that. All my wire holes were filled. Wonder if the F55 differs from the F56 for the wiring assignments...

Thank you very much for making this video. I've just successfully installed some on mine. Although I wasn't aware that you also have to pay an additional £50 to get full access to the Bimmercode app?! FYI- The app has also been updated now so it's much easier and simpler to update the coding without having to go through all the voltage shiz. Happy motoring peeps.

Inspired by your video I purchased a new set of tail lights and the Bimmercode app. I think I must have a newer version of the app as I only had to change the lights to LED and did not have to alter the warm and cold monitoring as I think this must now be automatic. Thanks very much for your excellent video.

Did you have to purchase expert mode for the app or with the new update can you setup the lights fully in normal mode? I think I have the part LED tail lights so not sure if that means I'll just need to set them to LED in Bimmercode for them to work? Cheers

Hi again,I did have another problem with the Union Jack lights,the break light strip was staying on when normal lights were switched on,but not when the day time running lights were on,but after watching your video,and having got a Bimmer code and icar adapter,and watching the rest of your video,all sorted. Again thanks,with out your help next visit would have been the garage. Chris

hi Great video and very clear on your instructions, much appreciated. i have a slight difference to what you showed on my 2017 mini one where i have swapped out the wires as you showed but i now have left side union light with indicator off but right side on. the right also has indicator (centre horizontal light) as red and left in yellow which is correct. i have not made expert mode updates yet but wanted check if something else wrong or is there a different fix required in expert mode?

Thank you very much! I tried many times to code the new UJ lights and still got the error message. The wires swapping was what made it work. I don't get why all the other tuts on YT don't mention that. Anyway, super happy with my new rear lights. Mini Cooper 3drs 2017.

Thanks for making this video! My version of the Bimmercode app (latest version on iPhone) doesn't seem to have the voltage monitoring section so I'm not able to alter the warm and cold monitoring... are you able to please advise?

Did these also come with LED Brake lights? I think mine did, haven't put them on yet but looks like it. I assume we just set "Reverse Lights lamp" to LED and disable the adaptive brake light warm/cold monitoring and should be good. Anyone need to do that?

I believe so. I think the UJ lights are pretty much a straight swap (without the need for expert mode coding) if you already had the non UJ led versions, so that suggests it would be the same process moving from halogens. I still think there are some halogen elements in the non-UJ led lights though so it may differ slightly in the cold/warm monitoring coding

Hi Thanks for posting this video. I have a f60 countryman with led headlights & fog lights. Does this mean I will have part led tail lights so wouldn't need to change pin & code ???

I don’t know about the f60. I’d have thought the union jacks for the countryman would be a straight swap (maybe with some minor coding for the voltage monitoring if any) id have a look on some forums

I have an issue with the reversing light not working on these. Any ideas? Tried following your instructions but nothings changed. They didn't work, I then didn't touch the lights and they worked for a day or 2 and now they don't work again 😕 help

Great video just what I was looking for!got the new lights today (genuine ones)for halogen on my 65plate Cooper😃 does anyone know , if when coding do you just leave the ignition on ready to start up lights radio ect on! Or do you have to have engine running🤔

Hi Dave, so when coding using bimmercode (or similar) you'll want the to turn the ignition on. You don't need the engine running though. Bimmercode will automatically reboot the ignition and ECUs after you code and you may see a brief stability control notification pop up on the screen but this gets cleared by the coding process. @@davefogg9586 interesting! I haven't seen this. It might work, worth a try! I'm unsure if it will do the expert mode coding though as you can retrofit the lights to both the halogen and LED equipped minis and bimmercode would need to know which lights you have equipped and that you've swapped pins around in order to change the right settings. I understand there is still some coding that needs doing if you fit retrofit LCI lights to an LED equipped car, so it might just do the cold/warm voltage monitoring etc. I will have a look the next time I use bimmercode.

@@squashylemming5202 I've just coded some genuine F60 LEDs. I've got the updated Bimmer code options, and I think it still needs the expert mode changes done. In daylight it looks right, but when you put headlights on it gets a bit confused (not sure what happens if the lights come on due to darkness due to being in Automode). It would still be usable, but the brake light comes on while the tail lights, and the tail and brake lights get brighter when you brake. I'm about to go out and do the expert bit and see what happens. Update soon.

Hi Kevin, your taillights will be halogen if you also have the halogen headlights. If you have the LED headlights then you should have the "part-LED" rear lights. In which case you don't need to do the pin swapping or expert coding, just the voltage monitoring coding.

I didn’t realise the fog lights would be controlled differently by the ECU for a car with just the one fog light, I’m assuming you have the cooper with the central fog light at the rear? Unfortunately I don’t have my mini or Bimmercode anymore so I’m afraid I can’t help. Might be worth looking online for a forum post?

Hi,have you changed your front headlights.been give a pair of led headlights from 2017 mini,my car is a 2016 model,thee problem is there are 3 pins on the 2017 and only 2 on mine,any ideas. Chris

From what I understand you can’t retrofit OEM mini led headlights to a halogen car. I may be wrong but I believe the wiring looms and controllers are completely different. There are aftermarket LED headlights that you can get although I don’t know if they have auto balancing which is a requirement to be legal on the road in most countries.

Hi, yes that’s correct. In fact now bimmercode is simpler to use than when I recorded the video. So I believe there are less settings you need to change.

If you are using bimmercode I believe there has been an update which lets you select if you are changing various lights to LED and it handles all the voltage stuff for you. But I’m not sure as I haven’t used the app since before the update.

Hello. I have a 2017 Mini Cooper base 2dr. Hatchback. I will install a oem Union Jack tail light. Do I need to do a recode? Also do I need to do what you did on the wiring swaps? Hi! Is your cooper equipped with the halogen lights? Or does it have the LED headlights at the front? If it has halogen bulbs then you will need to recode and do the wiring swap (as I have done). If it has LEDs already then you only need to do the voltage monitoring coding and not the expert mode stuff or wire swap. I used the iCar Pro Bluetooth version. It is really good. You will also need to purchase the full version of bimmercode to perform coding

@@ledi1824 yeah bimmercode is the app. But you will need the full version to actually code which is not free. If you have the halogen lights, I am not sure if there will be warning lights. you need to code and do the wire swap in order for them to light up correctly. Otherwise the car won't do the correct thing when you press the brake pedal etc. If you do this then there will be no warning lights

Because the lights originally installed on the car are the halogen version, the car has only 5 pins in the connector. The LED version have 6 and so do the UJ lights. Without swapping the pins on the connector (that is set up for halogen) the wrong parts of the light would light up when you brake, turn lights on etc. If you have the LED lights on your car to start with you don't need to do the pin swap.

@@squashylemming5202 so I do have the front lights on my 2016 f56 as LEDs but the rear taillights are non union jack (but I am sure they are LED as they are not the standard round ones but the fancy round ones where the red light lights up as two sem circles instead of solid block). Am I right in thinking that I won't need to swap the pins then? I guess it will be easy to just remove one and check the cables :-)

@@TheHazzaaHD yep pretty much! Bimmercode isn’t free though, even for the simple coding. You’ll just need to switch the taillights etc to LED in the app. It’s been updated since I made the video to make it more intuitive.

Mine has a slight gap on the outside of the light trim though which is annoying me… I drove the top screw for the light in further and compressed the foam behind the light as much as possible so not sure why there’s a slight gap - not sure how to fix it haha!

The car was a Cooper S Works 210. So was a cooper s which comes with the JCW tuning kit (pro exhaust, remap, jcw body kit) from factory. With the tuning kit they stick on the JCW and 210 works badges.

Are you sure you have halogen bulbs to begin with? If you have LED lights you don’t need to do the pin swap

@@squashylemming5202 I imported my US Mini F56 12/2018 to Germany and my connectors have 6 pins even though I have Halogen lights. I have the OEM UJ tail lights (ECE Version) on the way and may try them without changing a pin. Makes sense?
