This one is impressive! With oiling system and multi ring pistons etc. And it actually sounds great. Still quite expensive at $800 + having to buy spark plugs etc. I would seriously consider buying one if I could get the full set with < $600. With all the development in engine models in these years hopefully I won't need to wait much longer
@Teth47
@Teth47 Жыл бұрын
Definitely. It wasn't very long ago that an engine like this would be a custom commission from a grey-beard machinist that'd cost you new-car money. Granted the engine you'd get from that would be absolutely beautiful and run like a dream, but it's still two orders of magnitude more expensive and took a person like 3 months to make as opposed to this working micro engine that is made on an assembly line in probably about 3-6 hours. Wild that that's possible now.
@perwestermark8920
@perwestermark8920 Жыл бұрын
@@Teth47 Our current factory production abilities allows way better than this. The limiting factor is to have customers. So it's the slow ramp-up of customers expecting more that is the limiting factor for progress. If you get only 100 customers, then the tooling/setup cost is huge per produced engine. No one wants to make "the best" engine and set the sales price the same as a high-volume competitor and just hope that maybe, maybe you will get enough customers to find the product and leave the multiple competitors same-price, less-quality high-volume products. Because more parts still means more production cost. So you need not just same but actually much higher sales volumes to shrink the tooling cost and manage to still get the same profit level.

The build quality on this one is exceptional, compared to model engines I've seen in the past! Just the fact that it has the normal 3 main bearings that most 4 cylinders should have, a cam-in-block design, metal piston rings, a real oil pump, and actually carries oil in the crankcase, is a game changer. Reliability is going to be MUCH better than the usual nitro motors that depend on the fuel for lube. If the oil pump is working like it should, you shouldn't actually need that much oil in the crankcase? Anyway, sounds pretty good. Well done Johnny!😁👍
@capnplaidbeard
@capnplaidbeard Жыл бұрын
Honestly, if it weren't for the high cost, I'd buy one right now. The fact that it seems to fully oil itself is, like you said, a game changer for reliability. And the fact that all the wear components seem to be replaceable is even better. As long as you can still get the parts, or can make them yourself that is. All it needs is a good transmission to go with it, and you could have yourself a hell of an RC car or truck. To be clear, I understand the high price for this compared to other engines, the build quality certainly looks to be worth it. I'm just broke as shit.

What’s the oiling system like? What exactly does the pump send oil to with the crank and bearings themselves not having provisions for it? I can see splash oiling for the crank being enough, but it didn’t look like the head had oil ports. I hope I’m wrong, because I want one - but long term run time scares me with the oiling system not seemingly doing much.

I used to build little plastic models when I was a kid but now that I'm an adult I would love to put together one of these kind of models. Coming home from work and spending a couple hours putting a little model engine together and then being rewarded when you hear it run the first time would be so awesome. I wish they weren't so expensive though. Little out of my budget range for now. $1000 for the unassembled kit.. Ouch :(

@@Willppyro that would be one thing if it was my '67 V8 that I used to have. Before I had the truck that I have right now, I had a 98 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 V6. It was getting air into the coolant from somewhere. There was no oil in the water or water in the oil, but somehow compression gases were getting into the coolant system. A mechanic friend of mine came over and said he would help me take the heads off and put new head gaskets on. Holy crap! What a freaking chore that was. We ended up scrapping it because once we got in there we could see the Rings were bad and decided it was probably just needing a complete rebuild. Rebuilding a modern engine like that would definitely Not be fun for me. Way too much extra junk and no room to work. All these wires, plugs, and hoses just leave me scratching my head anymore. Give me an engine where the only wires going to it are to the ignition coil and the starter, and the only vacuum lines are going to the vacuum advance on the distributor and your vacuum brake booster. I would rebuild one of those anytime but these newer ones.. No Thank You. That's why these models are so appealing. It's just your basic engine with no frills. Plus.. I can't sit a regular engine on my desk.

@@ThreeDPrintDesigns I am. This thing is straight-piped with even firing order, which means at 6k rpm it produces the exact same exhaust note as a 2 stroke single at 12k. So basically a 10ccm from a helicopter or plane at roughly half it's max rpm. Nobody, and certainly not me, made a comparison to a tiny 2.5 or 3.5cc comp. rc race car engine with a resonator pipe, screaming down the track at 45.000 rpm.
