Always appreciate the content you're sharing! I have a bunch of little plants that I've wanted in a small-scale hydroponics system (cuttings and such that I don't want to ever dry out), so I'm excited to try this over the winter. Your excitement in this space inspires me to keep at it, too. Thank you!

a smaller hole along with the smaller bottle will both help, and a u shaped holder to make the whole thing flat and level would a boon... but over all verry cool... also the middle piece from a second bottle sliced and put on the first bottle would increase the rigidity of the system.. thanks for another great vid

This is cool as bud!! Just wondering if in the one you built if the nutrient level further away from the reservoir is higher than close due to the angle of the pipe? You could make a modified end cap that lets the pipe go straight through that would then keep that end at the same heigh. They would also be useful if you had a longer straight one to support the pipe along the length.

@@Hoocho It's a bit late but in Cura 4.13 that I'm using in the left hand action bar (where one selects to move, resize, or rotate an object) one of the options, shown as four different rectangles set in a square, is called "Per Model Settings." If one selects one of the models, clicks on Per Model Settings, and then one may change any of the settings for that model. The settings don't show automatically. One needs to click the Select Settings button and click on the visibility of the setting to have it appear for each model one wants to change the value for. The behaviour is exactly like selecting setting visibility in the Print Settings via the preferences. This is a default plug-in, at least in version 4.13 on the Mac when I just looked.

Great idea, but I can't find pots with the flat base similar to the ones you show. Can you give the brand or store (or on-line store) where you bought them? Those that I have found in the big B store don't have that flat base area but have bases with a series of ridges and hollows that make gluing down (with a seal for the wicking area) near impossible.

Had you thought about simply having a wick hanging out of the pots and printing only a stand for the pots to sit on? Perhaps even something similar for the bottle holder- water goes directly to the pipe and a stand stabilizes the bottle. No silicone or leaking issue.. lol or the dreaded microbes proliferating in the layers and pores of 3D printed plastic! Ahhh!!! I'm always thinking of minimizing print time and materials, while making better use of the cheap useful materials that are off the shelf (like pvc).

Looks like a neat little system, except I dont have a 3D printer, and I think cost of filament is still too expensive. Would getting a small net cup or pot glued to the bottom of a larger pot (through a hole in the larger pot) effectively do the same thing? Kinda like your rain gutter system.

I think you could 3D print/cut some rings out of a rigid material, the diameter of the bottle, and hot glue them in a few placers up the side to reinforce the structure so it doesn't collapse. Sure, its an extra step/thing to make but fairly easy IMO

@@Optamizm woodworkers often use this technique in their dust collection setups when a cyclone separator is used on a sealed bucket. The rings are placed on the inside so the bucket doesn't collapse under vacuum 👍

I feel like the roots are going to start to cause clogging problems - or at least that's what's happened to me in a "mini" NFT system. Those "net pots" are so tiny! Can you drill a hole in a glass wine bottle? Also, holding the bottle from directly behind the bit while drilling.... ooof.

Also, for a more watertight print, try upping your extrustion multiplier (in PrusaSlicer, not sure what it's called in Cura) to 1.03-1.05. Definitely helps.

Where you drill the hole in the bottle could you design the part that holds the bottle to have the hole in it instead of the bottle

This looks great, but why not make it so that the bottle holder cradles an elbow for your pipe, then you don't need to seal it. Also most piping you can find end caps for right around where you can find the elbows.

Hello Hoocho! 16:17 the integrity of the bottle is affected because as the water level in it drops down it creates a vacuum inside the bottle (at the very top of it) and it causes the bottle to collapse. This can be avoided by drilling a small pin hole at the top of the bottle (or gluing a small hose at the top, coming down of the bottle to act as a breather. Hope my explanation made sense! Edit: Another reason could be the fact that you decided to leave the cap on on that coke bottle.
@Luke-kv7nj
@Luke-kv7nj Жыл бұрын
The reason this concept works is because its sealed and only allows air to replace the water at the same rate the water flows out. If you were to put a pinhole in the top of the bottle the water levels in the bottle and pipe would try to equalize and it would just overflow instantly

wow that's cheap, you could probably shave some off by adding aeration holes for air pruning. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, you helped me get started in setting up a Organic NFT system, where I have vinyl gutters filled with soil, and a perforated dry wall vinyl L bead under the soil for the water to travel down, so it's under watered. This way I can use my Jang seeder to do hedges of salad. But I am switching to net cups, instead of using poly netcups that I wuold have to buy and clean, I am using 33% oyster mushroom substrate in my soil mix, this paired with the plants roots hold together the dirt in a seeding tray. I'll have the soil sitting ontop of a vinyl perforated platform that will be 1/2 of the drywall L bead. Someone I know has a freeze drier and freeze dried some sheeps blood, which is what I've been using as my nitrogen source, works really well when seaweed and worm tea is added, along with epsom.

Most of this build is PETG: My thoughts: If people use recycled plastic growers pots to grow plants, I think we’ll be okay using virgin plastic designed for household use. Please reevaluate the value of your comments when you start comparing small scale R&D hydroponic systems with big scale cost effective farming systems. To convert the systems he's testing to full scale commercial systems, he could do a whole new channel just on that topic. I'm pretty sure there are some people that is related to the industry or wants to be that are taking some notes of some of his projects, and figuring out how to scale that to their needs, or start testing similar systems to upscale later in time. And they will do the maths and tests by themselves as it should be. Finally, not everyone does everything for money, some like to research and learn, some just love trying new things, some just want to be more responsible in the impact they generate in nature, some want to start up a company and look for ideas, etc.
