It's funny that shoes that are supposed to give you the feel of being barefoot are so expensive, because being barefoot is free.
@tc59932
@tc59932 3 жыл бұрын
One reason for the high price comparded to traditional shoes is economies of scale. As you sell (and thus produce) more products, you spread the cost of production over a larger amount of units, thus have lower cost per unit, and can charge a much lower price as a result. It's a huge competitive advantage for massive companies like Amazon, and thus Nike and similar.

You can wash the fivefingers, no need for socks (unless it's below 10 degrees or so). I can also recommend trying out Joe Nimble, which has an ever wider toe box than the Vivos.

The vibram are good for a lot of things except for hiit workouts depending on the form of your feet. They're designed to be generic so... Also they don't stink, you're supposed to wash them every week... obviously if you don't they will stink very much :D

I love how fivefingers look, the shape of the foot is a bioengineering marvel and you appreciate it more and more as time goes on. Usually wear toe socks everyday anyway regardless of which shoes I’m wearing, and putting on a pair of vibrams is still faster than a normal laced shoe anyway. Currently using the V-Runs for most things (including running obviously) and considering some V-Trains for teaching BodyAttack classes to stop wearing out the runs with the lateral movement.

For anyone interested the vivo primus that are £110 look incredibly similar to the new balance minimus shoes which I have and bought new for £26. They're quite thin, lightweight yet supportive, have a zero drop sole design and are great in my experience for running and weight training. They also appear to be lasting longer than feiyues I've had in the past.

Yes, and the top shoe companies knew this when adding all the bullshit features to their shoes such as arch support, extra heel padding, etc. Nike were one of the first to add this useless garbage to their shoes just so they could charge more. Nothing more than exactly why Gillette keeps adding more crap to their razors, so they can put a patent in place and charge more for their product whilst stopping their competition from being able to copy what they have.

For light barefoot running I love the Shamma Warrior maximus sandals, since the are closer to barefoot than even the fivefingers in terms of toe movement and gripping the ground. While I am also one of those weirdos enjoying to wear the conversation-starting toe schoss (the description of putting them on was accurate, btw), a nice middle ground between running sandals and barefoot shoes are Xero shoes. The walking and running feel is very close to the vivobf experience without the clapping sound the latter will produce every now and then.

The Number after the Nike Free (such as 4.0) doesn't specify the Millimeters between the ground and your feet, it's just that 1.0 is nearest to the ground. There is nothing above 5.0. Also, the stability of a shoe doesn't depend on it's sole, it's about the upper.

Quick tip for smelly shoes: Throw a used herbal teabag in them and leave overnight. It will absorb the odours and leave your shoes smelling great. Using Vivo barefoot boroughs right now. They are the best shoes I've ever owned, movement is more natural and my feet have no pain after a day in them. Only issue with the boroughs is (and you'll see this in the review section of these shoes on vivos site) is the padding on the inside back of the shoes. It digs into the back of your ankles and it made my left one bleed after first day of use. I've had them months now so they're fully broken in and they're just the best. Very stylish too, got a lot of compliments.

If you have very wide feet like I do then you will struggle to find minimal shoes that fit. Vivo barefoot are good, though they cost a lot and the thin mesh parts don't hold up over time. They always fail right where the toes bend as it causes a pinch point that weakens the mesh. Vibram 5 fingers are good, though the quality of the glue they use seems to have dropped off as I've had some separation in certain areas, but the shoes last a long time. You tend to need a couple of pairs to allow them to dry out fully after wearing them or they can get a bit smelly, but you can also throw them in the wash.

The baggy part of the feiyues sound like a dream. I always have trouble putting on and taking off shoes cause they're so tight in that area on me.

really interesting. Have been considering buying minimal shoes for running for a long time, however I suffer from foot pronation (slight fallen arches) and I worry that a minimal vivo barefoot running show could worsen my problem because of the lack of arch support. anyone have any advice ?

Recently bought a pair of vivo shoes. My issue though with Vivo is that they have advertising pictures on the site of their shoes that you can’t purchase anymore. Also was really excited for a pair of shoes that showed in a search for my size only to find they were out of stock at the size or available only in different colors.

Great video, you've piqued my interest in the Primus, which weren't on my radar at all before. I disagree on a couple of points: Feiyues seem to be creeping up in price as more people become aware of them, my first pair was under a tenner, last 2 were under £15. I haven't bought anymore since I can't find them anywhere for under £20 and in stock... The toe box is a little too rigid, and because the manufacturing is a bit of a lottery, it's easy to get an uncomfortable pair that might not start wear in till they're almost worn out... I have those same fivefingers and I really don't find getting my toes in an issue. The heel is kind of annoying but that's the price for a close fit. I find the quickest way is to crawl your toes in first, then worry about the rest. I do wear toe socks exclusively these days (cure for sweaty toe induced blisters) so maybe all that practice scews my opnion there. Some Vivo Barefoot shoes feel more like being barefoot to me simply because your toes can move freely in there vs the slightly rerstrictive feel of the Vibrams if your toes aren't perfectly straight. Like you touched on in the video, the feel varies a lot between the different styles.

Got my Feiyues from Yellow Mountain Martial Arts a few months ago. Order a pair (£14), then go to checkout, and then there should be an offer of an additional pair for £10. (edit: though I suppose there's a shipping fee, can't remember...)

for a while i thought the nike 4.0 were very uncomfortable, until I started changing my gait. They are now super comfy but i don't get the lack of support from what others feel. Could it be the way someone laces up their shoes?

Hey Tom, Great review and video! I used to train outside only with socks and then decided I need shoes for outdoor workouts (before you did this review :)), so I ordered a five fingers el-x (The most minimal model they have), they are awesome so far except for the way they look :). What I find a bit "annoying" is when practicing handstands I still think the best way is to be as close as possible to real barefoot, which means with socks or with nothing on, just because of the small fact that you can't really POINT your fingers with any of those barefoot shoes, Do you agree? Thanks!!

Oh and I also ordered a pair of Feiyue now, super cheap :) but still not a solution for handstands..

Most recent tried the Rip Tab Aquashoe from decathlon. Remove the insole. Did running, hiking, casual wear etc and I’m loving it! Very breathable and fast drying too. 👍🏼 recommend

I've only used the 5 fingers personally. I don't use them super often. I have run in them, but I'd wear them in good weather, maybe around the office too sometimes. I don't mind the aesthetic, but every once in a while I can catch a toe on an uneven section of pavement just because the toes are all separated. Funnily enough, I have used them for open water swimming in the past where I'll keep them in my swim buoy, swim a few KM then when I get out, put them on and run back to my insert point. now- Try putting these things on with both wet a numb feet. It's impossible! it almost took me 5 minutes the last time haha. a very unique circumstance I'll grant you but true none the less!

You can put the vibrams in your washing machine and simply wash them... no more smell after that! And you can take baking soda for getting rid of the smell. I just love those vibrams for gym, work and free time. I dont care what other people say. The do much more ashaming things in their daily life....

Tom, have you tried Kwon (german martial arts brand) training shoes. I got them because I've seen Ido, Roye and Odelia wear them. They resemble Feiyues in appearance but are a bit more durable. They go for 18 euros.

Anyone have an opinion on Saucony Bullet shoes? They have a bit of sole at the heel, but in the toebox the sole is minimal and decently wide for toe room. Seems like it could fit on this list!

I really always liked the idea of the Five Fingers. I tried one pair on in a shop years ago and they didn't quite fit right. Now I can't find them in any shop because they're afraid of getting sued by anyone who buys them. Tha'ts because people were just putting them on and hitting the trails, etc. like they would in a runner. Not a good idea. I've been seen a lot of Vivo shoes around the gym and on social media. I like them too but always worried about the costs and benefits. Apparently someone who has bought them can pass on a discount to a new buyer, I need to ask again about that. I'm wearing the Nike Free RN from 2018. Great shoe, with some cushioning, but I do feel my ankles roll a little in them. I'm happy enough though.
