This is a vote for the online companion-video - I find even post-pandemic that I struggle to get to real secondhand shops as they so often close at 5pm, when I'm still at work. Raking through charity shops (thrift stores in the US) used to be one of my favourite things to do before I worked full time, and I miss it. I'm trying to find a balance between avoiding new online fast fashion, and buying disappointing/unflattering second hand items I can't return, which sit in my wardrobe for months. Any tips to avoid disappointment welcome!

I buy almost all of my clothes at thrift stores and one of the main reasons is because the items are already worn and washed and I can see how they will hold up over time. Great video as always!

Basic secondhand cashmere sweaters are SUCH an amazing addition to a wardrobe. I also love wool and cashmere and they are just the absolute best for temperature regulation since they are super warm but also don’t make you as sweaty as manmade fibers in my experience.

This is a bit of a random question, but you’re so knowledgeable on fabrics that a video on how to care for different fabrics (especially washing!) would be sooo helpful. I’m on a journey of buying sturdier, more organic fabrics, but when it comes to care I often scratch my head. Not sure if it would be of interest to you , but I know for sure I would definitely find that useful :) LUH YA keep killin the game 🖤🖤

Thank you for this video! Thrift stores are the best. Your tip about checking every size and trying on sizes you wouldn’t think would fit you are top tier. When I started thrifting, I had to retrain my brain to start shopping that way lol. Loving your style and the items you selected 😊

That tip about looking at all the sizes is really good. My frame, like my actual bone structure (not my weight because that fluctuates), is better suited to things that drape, are longer in proportions so I often end up in the men’s department. I learned at a relatively young age to completely ignore the size labels. I scan a stores entire collection (or at least the totality of the categories I am interested in) and get an idea of how that brand constructs it’s clothing, what materials they use, how they cut them, etc. I can tell pretty quickly by now if anything on offer is going to work for me or not. They can label it any size they want, if the cut is for a narrow frame regardless of the size they slap on the label, it just won’t work for me. If it’s cut for an hourglass figure, it won’t work for me. This applies to fabrics as well. If it is a jersey knit, forget it. It’s never going to drape, it’s always going to cling or bunch up or just look way too delicate for my broad bone structure. So, ya, when I go thrifting, I scan every darn item. I don’t even have to try things on anymore. There are tricks that come in handy (like, take the waist band with the pants done up and wrap it around your neck. If it fits around your neck, the waist of the pants will fit. If you want them loser, they should fit loser around your neck and so on. For shirts, grasp the shoulders by the seams and flip it over your head and hold it up against your shoulders at their broadest point - holding it across the front won’t work as well because your back across your shoulders is your broadest point. Also, hold the shirt from the outset of the shoulder seam against the back of your shoulder and grasp the cuff and extend your arm out in front of you, this will show you how long the sleeves will be on you. Hold pants at the waist from the backside so they drape over your bum, this will give you a better idea of how long they will be on you. All a little bit awkward, but you get the hang of it lol. Shoes can be roughly sized from the inside of your elbow to your wrist and the width can be roughly ascertained from the widest part of your palm spread as far as you can …. Socks are sized by making a fist and wrapping the foot of the sock from toe to heel around it ….. ) The more you hone in on the details of why the garments you love work so well for you - the material, the cut, the finishing details (pleats, no pleats, button sizes and placement, deep generous hems or no visible hems at all, etc.), you’ll be able to hone in on items that will work for you and you will happily walk away from bad purchases and save yourself a lot of time in the doing 😃 oh, and also, try rinsing that wool with some distilled vinegar after you’ve soaked it in your shampoo or wool detergent. Vinegar will help soften the fibres without at all damaging them. The smell will quickly dissipate, but you can also find scented vinegar for this purpose. The vinegar rinse is also really helpful for getting all the shampoo or detergent out of the fibres which is part of what helps to soften the fibre.

The things you need to worry about actually being "dry clean only" are tailored pieces like jackets that have lining and structural elements which could be destroyed/dislodged in washing...I'm definitely a Frankie Bergstein coastal grandmother, if the coast is Lake Superior...

I love using apps like Vinted to get second-hand stuff. After these two years of basically living in loungewear, I've been looking at more dressy stuff and it's been quite the lifesaver.

Have you ever you used a wool wash like Euclan? As a wool fanatic with a lot of wool basics I really recommend using a dedicated wool wash for machine washing delicates or hand-washed garments! You can certainly use other stuff, but products like Euclan have ingredients like lanolin built in to keep wool clothes feeling their best!

I am so glad that the experience of hunting and "big catch" was brought in. That's why I love these stores. Time-consuming, but really unique, special, high-quality things can be found cheaply. Oh, and since it's cheap, it's more cost-effective to try, find and identify your own unique style than with an investment piece, or with a fastfachion (they've already been manufactured, so there's less damage if it doesn't work).

Absolutely YES to ignore the size and have a close look on the garment. Size descriptions seem to differ from brand to brand, the year of construction matters and mostly the country. I live in Europe and in contemporary American brands I am between size small and medium. Italian and French brands construct "smaller", I need a size large usually. Vintage items (80% of my wardrobe are thrifted) are size wise a complete mess ... I own and wear extra small as well as extra large.

That Peach or Coral bag of yours in that particular colour and style is so gorgeous, suits your season colour pallette. Even expensive bags from prestigious designer brands can't compete the way it compliments you. There wasn't even one moment when my attention wasn't caught by the bag even with the blurry background in every video. Lot's of love to you and your bag! ❤✨👜

Great finds. That dark blue textured sweater is really fun. The manufacturers often recommend dry cleaning for things that don't need it. Sometimes it's for the shaping of the garment.

Hannah, evey time I hand wash something I lay it flat on a towel and roll it to gently squeeze out the excess water. It makes a huge difference! Hope it helps 🥰

As a nomadic dweller, I love your video! You have great taste and an amazing personality. I have a minimal wardrobe due to space. Textures are huge for me and wool or merino wool is a huge staple for me as well. Due to working and living in a variety of environments, I have to be able to cover every environment that we work in. Thrift stores have provided most of my wardrobe over the past several years. I have expense taste as well and love love love finding great pieces. My only rule living this way, (and huge base on if im going to be buying something) is that if I purchase something new, I generally have to give away something else. All due to the limited space, I really have to be in love with the garment for purchase. Anyway, thank you for great video!

Another takeaway that helped me in this vid was googling consignment Stores in my area. I live in a place where it really felt that there was nothing like that. Only thrifts but I just googled it and found 2 stores that are only like 7 minutes away from my house. Thank you Hannah!

a definite yes for the online version! I'm curious about your tips on it to see if my past 2 years of online thrifting have left me with enough lessons or if I need to learn more. I'd also be curious to learn about fabrics and what their best use cases are, like in the example with the nylon pants. I probably would have passed on them because the fabric is synthetic, without considering that sometimes you might want that

Two things: 1. Wool is so beautiful, I love the drape and look of it. I would wear it every day because it is so gorgeous. Also, I am allergic to wool--not just the itchy, scratchy but the anaphylaxis. I am constantly on the hunt for something that has the look of wool without inadvertantly killing me. Suggestions? 2. I have ADHD, thrift stores can send me into a panic. I have to put myself in a hyper-focus mode to get through it, your Gen Z cousin's approach is the only way I can get through it. Even so, I have had the experience of being in the zone, someone inadvertantly knocks me out of it, and I have to leave everything I've found, and run out of the store to be able to breathe. So, I definitely vote for the online version of this video. 😃

Hahaha, I am an actual Coastal Grandma who is a hippy-ish artist. I don't have actual grandchildren-never had kids-but I'm old enough to be a grandmother. I hang my pants & skirts up on clip hangers & find that turning the items inside out will prevent the clips from damaging/crushing the fabric & leaving marks. It also helps keep dust & lint off of black clothing that may not get worn all year long (sweaters, formal wear, blouses) I use plastic shoulder covers for my black wool coats & dark blazers/jackets. Thrift shopping isn't convenient for me since I don't drive & my husband would have to take me. I am also in a size that is not the easiest to find in stores so I prefer shopping online & not wasting my time. But I have used Consignment Stores in the past to sell my basically unworn clothing that is unique in some way or was expensive. (Hashimotos sucks for weight fluctuations & now I just keep things until my weight inevitably changes again) I haven't found a good consignment shop where I currently live so I've sold some of my shoes online via local buy/sell/trade apps & FB. I've considered getting a Poshmark acct but Idk if people look for non designer items there. I purchase good quality but it's hardly Designer.

I really appreciate your tip to know specifically what you like in clothes before starting. I have often bought things in thrift shops that sorta work just because i was so exhausted trying to find anything at all. My sizing falls right on the XL/plus line so ive always tended to look through everything. finding something that fits nicely, not just literally can go on my body, can be extremely time consuming. Like, a day or two with no finds in multiple stores.

Invest in Dryell. It's a system of a bag that you put your dry cleaner items in along with the sheet that comes with it. Toss in the dryer and your dry clean clothing come out fresh and clean. You will have hand wash "spots" or stains or dryell has helped me so much with my dry cleanables. Great video.

Omg. I knew that was St John before you showed us the tag. Thrift store St John is literally the best! EDITED TO ADD: St John has to be dry-cleaned. It does not take water well. The internet is full of examples of people who tried. I don’t dry-clean many clothes, but I always dry-clean St John. If you’re not up for dry-cleaning, you might do better to febreeze it and sell it to someone who doesn’t mind dry-cleaning. You can make some nice money from that set.

Great advice! Another reason to go through all sizes is that fabrics like cashmere or merino often times run small or get smaller if washed. Conversely linen usually runs large. I also have found women's clothes like sweaters and even jeans in the men's section. Another great place to check is the rack where clothes that were tried on in the fitting rooms get hung to be put back on the racks by the employees. I enjoy finding great vintage leather handbags in thrift stores...often a good leather cleaner is all one needs to make a bag look brand new! It's just so fun to find a great brand at the thrift store you couldn't or wouldn't otherwise afford.

Lol I was just thinking about matching sets & the cruise wear lines of clothing. Resort wear, etc... Matchy matchy is not my vibe (it was the only option for thrifted maternity clothes in 99, I am still sick of it hahaha), but I could see picking up some fantastic saturated color pieces like deep green "office tees," and hot pink trousers. The thrift store calls to me, but I must shop my own closet for now lol. Just spent too much on much needed camping, foraging, & winter gear-clothing, but it will likely live thru 2-3 generations.

What a smart video. I rarely ever hit the thrift or consignment shops because I feel like I've trained my brain to say "I can't never find anything." However, I want to take your advice of making a mental checklist of qualities or styles I'm seeking, and try again!

As a man who knows little of brands in the fashion industry, this video is priceless. Now when i walk into the store you have helped me slow down and take into account the longevity and purposefulness of what i might purchase. And yes i still succumbed into a shirt that was clearly fast fashion (among other better quality items i purchased), but i put emphasis it would only be purchased if it was on clearance! Lol
