Coach buses Arnt built good. Just a skeleton with fiberglass. Not good in crashes

@Jack Hoffman buses are well built. They are 45 feet long an weigh 40,000lbs empty. Yes they are a monocoque construction. The Humboldt crash is an extreme case, you have to understand the amount of energy involved in a 40k bus carrying 56 passengers and luggage(56,000lbs all in). As a motorcoach operator, I see all the people that fail to drive remotely defensively, everyday it's kinda sad ho many people risk their life and property to "try" to save 12 seconds before they hit the next red light.

LOL Oh they are surprisingly something....... Plywood, thin stamped tin, foamfill, zip ties and fibreglass. When new they are fine and fit for purpose but 10 years later they squeak and flex, crunch and groan.... The Chassis are great but the actual body's? Nope. Part of why School buses here have a life limit plus 2 years as a spare.

I did the same thing. I was gifted TWO school busses with 7.3s & Allison Transmissions. I took a weekend with a buddy and literally stripped everything usable - Engines, Trans, Electrical Harnesses, fly-by-wire accelerator pedals, radiators, intercooler & piping, computers, relays & relay boards, switches, and miles of 2/0 and 4/0 copper cable. All stored for future use or sales. At least 20k worth of free stuff. So I completely get where you’re coming from!!

Cheapest place I used to get my 1/0 or larger cable is the welding supply store. This is definitely a good alternative if you have the time/ local yard that doesn't mind you walking around in. Most of the yards near me aren't a 'you pull it' scenario anymore unfortunately. I'm guessing theft and insurance reasons killed most of the pick and pulls which really sucks cuz exploring the yard for good parts/ looking at wrecks is honestly fun in my opinion.

Rich. Try out one of your electrical buddies and get a Burndy crimper for those cable connections. Tinned lugs. 12 tons of compression on the connections. Shrink wrap. Cool, snug low loss connections. ⚡️loose wires, cause fires....

busses are extremely well put together, especially when it comes to electrical harnesses, cable ties are cheap insurance for a MFR when the transit authorities inspect them and these harnesses are better built than any automotive harness anywhere in the world, you could probably cut 100 ties in 20 feet of harness, i just to install them for New Flyer in Winnipeg and yes a ton of 1/4" hardware 👍

If you need shorter lengths look for junkyards with BMWs. I used to grab them from e30s (3series 1980s early 90s ish.) for battery relocation cables. Anything with a trunk mounted battery will have a nice piece of wire in it.

It's amazing how much equipment is held together by zip ties. Airliners and telco equipment rooms use cable lacing (wax string). Cutting out a mile of stitching to mine a 30 foot cable is always a treat.

When you see one of them crazy things I've done in a YT video! 2 years ago I was having trouble with my paver engine starting. After inspection I found cheap cables terribly wired in place of the bad original. Im talking help rack cheap junk! After pricing new I did exactly what you are doing!

Rich, if you ever need cable/ wire, Nassau National Cable is the place to buy it. If they deliver to you. In the U.S at least they're the cheapest I've been able to find wire anywhere and they have free shipping

Yeah I could tell this was going to be fun, Driven and repaired a few of these back in the day and the builders loved the glue and cable tie when they should just have run conduit instead. Im surprised you didn't ohm check those batteries to see if they were any good while you were in the Bay, lotta dollars left behind there.

Always good having friends at the scrap yard cause were i live you want to buy any scrap it will cost you x3-x4 or more what they paid for it unless its something they don't want or your doing something for them. Its why we now live in a throw away society, keep having fun people and remember some people have access to materials etc a lot cheaper than others so help each other out don't be the person that gloats and never helps a random

I have not seen school busses anyware in the world. This is the US thing. In europe kids are using ordinary public transport or ordinary busses not some special kind bus with special school bus driver.

@@coltonmcrae5873 a school bus today is $140k canadian. A new line run/commuter coach(not fancy) is about $650k. School buses are designed for a different purpose(short trips lightly loaded). A motorcoach is a heavy duty vehicle. They weigh 40,000lbs empty, 56,000lbs loaded. 13L motors 450hp. It's a working g machine. We have buses in our fleet that are 2012s and they are set to retire this fall with 1,400,000km. Re-powered at 1 million(brand new engine) the last retired units went for around $30k at auction.

Its better to pull it out of a bus in a junkyard, than it is from a working rock crushing plant at nights. One is legal, one is not, lmao. I mainly know of it, as its happened to the company my dad works for, where people saw the surge in price for copper, and started stealing it from the plants. At the time, my dad was also top of the list for seniority, so whenever the cops had to be called for the report, it was my dad going in to open the gates at 1 am.

I remember ripping fuel line out of a brand new motor coach bus because tunnel assemblers (the tunnel is what rich was ripping open) installed the wrong fuel hose. Those busses were mostly built in Winnipeg and then finished in the states as per some dumb nafta agreement.

I find the easiest copper cable source is old box trucks with tail lifts, the run them along the side of the chassis and are piss easy to remove.

All those hounds were condemned. Every bus in the fleet except 16 in the Canadian fleet were grounded. Thats why greyhound folded up.

I know its not ideal, but I have noticed you can buy jumper cables much cheaper than individual cable. I think it was in January I got a 1/0 25' set of jumpers intended for equipment and on-highway tractors for like $50 from an online truck and trailer store out in the Midwest. They were very flexible, and they didn't cheap out on strand count either. What's nice is that they are already mated together so you only have to tie up one cable. Just cut the clamps and crimp your own ends. Main thing I didn't like was it seemed like the insulation might not have been as thick, but I secured my run well and my circuit is properly fused. Just to cut off the rest of the CCA comments. I specifically purchased leads that were advertised to be OFC NOT CCA, and verified as such when I cut the clamps off. The only other time I did this. It was for a low current battery maintainer to tie a secondary battery for a small compressor engine in with the charging system of a work truck. Cut the ends off and realized they were CCA. Scraped that set and went back to get an OFC set. Never had an ounce of trouble for the 5 years I drove the truck.

With so much car stereo stuff being popular you can sometimes get good cable by going for stuff aimed that way. Although sometimes stereo stuff ends up like jumper cables where it’ll be CCA and have a ton of insulation covering a smaller amount of wire. Welding cable is almost always a sure thing, but is also almost always pricey.

As an electrician I love mining old cables from buildings I am working in. It buys tools, stuff for projects and keeps the lights on in my home shop. No shame in it, and if you can reuse the cable it worth much more than it’s scrap value. Just check over the insulation for damage. Cable doesn’t wear out like other components, especially when installed inside away from the elements, it will be a serviceable as the day it was made. Well done.

I see lots of these Isuzu NPR cab over dully with a 4 cyl turbo and auto. Would these eng/tran work as a repower is a F250 / F350 in place of the V-10. I'm looking for efficiency and mileage - not massive power.

down here in Merika' , 3-4 scrap-methers could strip one of those buses in 30 mins or less. It looked like you guys were having a good time, at least it wasnt snowing lol

Every bus except 16, in greyhounds canadian fleet was CONDEMNED by the MTO. Thats the reason why they folded up quietly.

@@jnk26 to many miles not enough people, only existed do to subsidies in the first place and when it lost political favor there was only 1 logical outcome. Planes are faster and frequently are only a marginal difference in price.

@@jaydunbar7538 I'm sorry to tell you, as a motorcoach operator(Ontario Northland) were running in the corridors greyhoud left. The demand is there. Planes aren't more efficient, or less expensive(Thunder Bay to Ottawa is $265 bus vs $319 flight) they most certainly don't service all the small towns that the bus does. Yes in a long range trip time efficiency is unbeatable. But every other aspect of aerospace is way more costly. Grey didn't fold because of the lack of subsidy. I work with 11 drivers from greyhound(from London, ON to Calgary,Ab) people I have know for years, and they all agree the fleet was exhausted(should have been retired) years ago. The fact that they condemned 90% of the fleet is pretty clear why they folded. There isn't enough buses available to fill that gap(new and used. Hell seeing some of the smaller companies(Badder/Cherry) get their 60 unit fleet up and running is hard to watch. There part supplies(batteries/ tires/alternators/radiator) are hard to get. Not to mention drivers are in short supply. Most drivers are retired/semi-retired and don't want to risk covid.
