Bought this video/tape on eBay quite a few years ago and thought it was time to share (we're not getting any younger, NFL Films). So, for the "old" fans that are still around, and for the current fans that are just curious, here's what your Minnesota Vikings were doing thirty-nine years ago...that's assuming KZfaq allows me to keep it posted.

He would be. If the offenses he played for would have scored more than 0 points in the first half of all 4 superbowls combined. Unfortunately thats the way the HOF picks players.

Maybe the Vikes' 42-10 win over the Bengals, with Tark having his best game, would have been the spark needed to make them truly competitive in the playoffs, but when Fran got hurt late in the game, their chances of winning it all diminished very quickly..

+MassVt ...true...but i would argue that the L.A Rams had perhaps one of the greatest runs in NFL history for an organization that didn't win a SB..think about this, from 1967 to 1989, a little over 2 decades, the L.A. Rams had the 2nd most wins in pro football, with only Raiders having more..in that 23 year run, the Rams had 19 winning seasons, making the playoffs 16 times, collecting 8 division titles, and going to 8 NFC title games...all that greatness and only one SB appearance in 79..find me an organization that had that kind of run to make the SB only once.. good luck

They were consistently the best team in the NFC other than Dallas...depending on what particular season youre referring to. I always rooted for the Vikes to win the NFC because I hate Dallas and the LA Rams...the Vikings two biggest NFC playoff rivals in the 70's. The AFC dominated the 70's for the most part...particularly Miami, Oakland, and Pittsburgh. The only NFC team to win a Super Bowl during the 70's was Dallas(1971 and 1977). I'm a Bills fan so I was glad when they beat Miami in 71 but I was pulling for Denver in Super Bowl 12 against Dallas

Minnesota was my favorite NFL team growing up in the 70s and and 80s. Nothing better than watching the purple people eaters and Fran scrambling around in the backfield driving defenses crazy. I only wish Minnesota had won at least one superbowl while Fran was there. They had some really great teams, but so did Pittsburgh and Oakland.

+MassVt By 1977 the Vikings were just too old to be a Super Bowl threat, but yeah, Tarkenton to Bob Lee was a massive drop-off. The irony of that Bengals game was that it was one of the best performances of Tarkenton's career. When he went down in the third quarter, he was 17-for-18 for three TDs -- and the incompletion was an intentional grounding penalty.
@bitterangrydrunk
@bitterangrydrunk 8 жыл бұрын
+MassVt I should add that the three games where they were blown out -- at Los Angeles, at Oakland and at home against the Cardinals, where shocked Vikings fans booed them out of the stadium -- were kind of a tell that we'd reached the end of the championship era. It was Marshall's 18th season, Eller's 14th and Page's 11th.
@massvt3821
@massvt3821 8 жыл бұрын
Bitterangry--Very true. The Vikes had several blow-out losses in 77, and just couldn't stop anyone's ground game. Marshall just shouldn't have been playing in 77, and Page/Eller had become too light to have any great impact. Sometimes Grant's allegiances to certain players ( i.e. Fred Cox) had detrimental effects. The weatherf, and the Rams, both contrived to put the Vikings in the NFC championship game, but I knew they couldn't win it..

Just why did the Vikings lose those 4 superbowls, well against KC they were overconfident and made one mistake after another and really they had no running game and Kapp wasn't no pure passer and KC defense was hugely underrated. Ok next up Miami in 73? Seriously who could beat that team? NO one in the NFC that team was even better than the 72 team was. The next one Pitts, I thought the vikes would win this one or their best shot, but pitts defense again was just better and they couldn't stop Franco at all. Next one against the Raiders, no way vikes defense was too old, and Raiders chewed them up. I hate to say it but Rams choked the NFC championship away more than the vikes won that one. I thought the 75 Vikes were the best but Cowboys and that I cant even say it. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The Vikings should've never moved indoors to the Metrodome. Same with the Detroit Lions. The weather used to be such a huge advantage for the Vikes when they were playing at home in the playoffs...especially against warm weather teams like Dallas and the Rams. Since they moved indoors they haven't won anything. They've been to the NFC Championship numerous times but lost every single time. The worst was against Atlanta in 98. They should've destroyed that Falcons team. The Vikings vs the Broncos would've made for a great Super Bowl match-up. The Broncos-Falcons was a horrible Super Bowl. Atlanta had no chance in that game

@@stanleyhornbeck1625 Okay, the Vikings were the Bills over 8 seasons. However, the Bills should have won the SB against the Giants. Scoring only 19 points and blaming the loss on a 47-yard FG that went right. The head coach should have been horse-whipped for screwing this chance up. That's my rumble opinion.
