Miracle Mile - Story Location Tour Episode Two
Join me on PART TWO of this adventurous tour of one of my favorite neighborhoods in Los Angeles, the Miracle Mile. We will explore this historically rich area through the eyes of a 1988 film starring Anthony Edwards and Mare Winningham aptly titled “Miracle Mile” directed by Steve de Jarnatt.
Episode TWO will feature Johnie’s Diner (or) Coffee Shop Restaurant which was also used as a shooting location of The Big Lebowski, American History X, City of Angels, Suburbia, and Midnight Madness. Also included will be Googie architecture, O-Lan Jones, Denise Crosby, Bing Crosby, Claude Earl Jones, Earl Boen, Raphael Sbarge, Danny De La Paz, Robert DoQui, Diane Delano, Alan Rosenberg, Theo van de Sande, the May Company, the Academy Museum, Saban theater, David Geffen Theater, and Orange Street.

Loved your Carpenter’s series so much. I grew up with their music. Awesome! Never watched Miracle Mile, but you brought it, and Los Angeles of that era to life. Thank you.

Oh no, I hope your day got better. I think what I love about this movie Miracle Mile is that no matter how bad a day I'm having nothing is as bad as the day in this movie.

I remember eating at Johnnie’s after seeing Oingo Boingo at Madam Wong’s West. I got to the box office after work and met a couple of guys who drove all the way from the IE. We needed to kill time before the show started so we walked all over the place…for hours. Was a fun night with a couple of strangers.

I was visiting LA and went through the Academy Museum. I thought the Johnny's Restaurant building was special and took some photos of it. Now I know the backstory. I really appreciate your attention to detail and history. The pace is perfect as well. Thank you!

Back when this movie was made, rats were in the news, often seen running along power lines between palm trees, and in Beverly Hills of all places. They lived in the crown of the palms. I remember seeing them late at night running across the lobby carpet at the Beverly Hilton.

From what I've heard, the Johnny's Coffee Shop building will be preserved and incorporated into the future D-Line subway station being built on that corner. Not entirely sure how accurate those reports are as of yet, but I hope that's the case.

I used to see Robert DoQui at the Bally’s in Hollywood. I remember seeing him in the hot tub and telling him hey you’re in miracle Mile and Foxy Brown. I’m sure he loved being recognized. And Raphael Sbarge used to go to the tanning booth where I worked Melrose tanning. I knew he was an actor, but didn’t know him from anything. I remember listening to the audio commentary on the miracle mile Blu-ray. And they mentioned he’s the one on the phone. That was crazy. Wish I had known that when I would see him in the 90s.
