Really appreciate the tutorial. I just changed mine 5 minutes ago. Fair warning to everyone, it can get messy! Let the coolant drain as you pull it out. And put the filter back in slowly, the coolant level will come up and spill out!

Check the FC coolant level. If its at full or above, start the vehicle to initialize the Fuel Cell and check around the housing for leaks. Do not forget to reset the Ion Filter Maintenance reminder. To do so navigate to settings --> Maintenance --> Reset Ion Filter. Please see below for after care.

When you got the new filter element, was it wet. I got mine from the Toyota dealership, it was completely sealed but when I open it, it was wet. Not sure if it was supposed to come with it wet. Thank you.

Yes ofcourse, it must be wet. Because inside the filter there are granules of ion exchange resin. If they dry out, they will deteriorate.

What is the fluid in the FCV Cooling system and noticing some loss of fluid on filter replacement, should it be topped off? Will Toyota sell in Parts to owner?

No they dont that's why i pay $240 for the reset and topoff of ion fluid. I buy the filter myself and replace it...

What happens if you never replace the ION filter? Might sound like a dumb question but I’m curious?

It's hard to tell. The filter contains ion exchange resin, which looks like little fish eggs. I am not totally sure, but usually the main function of the ion exchange resin is to soften and desalinate water. If the filter is not changed, it can increase the conductivity of the coolant and possibly clog the thin holes of the hydrogen fuel cell cooling system with calcium.

Нет никаких изменений. Там внутри этого фильтра насыпаны гранулы, очень похоже на ионообменную смолу, точно такая как в фильтрах для питьевой воды.

I've done this replacement 2 days ago and i buy the Ion filter directly at Toyota Service Center but after i replace the old one with this brand new ion filter the message still pop up "Ion Filter Maintenance" whenever i start the engine/car? What's still needs to be done?

Go to the info on your infotainment system and message and you can delete it

Is that ion filter the one that needs to clean the air before it goes into the fuel cell? If so, how often does one needs to do this on average.

Actually no. It's a fuel cell coolant filter. 2017-2019 - Every 35K miles.

@@dmitri1490 Нет, фильтр не имеет к этому никакого отношения, это просто система охлаждения. У меня получается 250 миль примерно, а когда на машине ездит жена, то 270.

I can’t believe some people are saying that Toyota charges up to $1000 to do this. The filter is less than $300. How can they justify a $700 labor charge for a 15 minute job?

Нет, он фильтрует охлаждающую жидкость, которая циркулирует по водородным топливным элементам. Судя посодержимому фильтра, это обычная ионообменная смола, такая же как для умягчения воды.

@@carrbeat Раз в 30 000 миль, цена фильтра $200 - $300. Но там просто пластиковый корпус с гранулами, по какой причине такая стоимость непонятно.
