A very honest and beautiful rendition. Unusually we can understand every single word! Well, they just don't do sopranos like Mirella Freni anymore.

I love that she sang the final “maledizione” as written in the score. Verdi wrote it that way purposefully. There’s more emotion behind that last Bb when sang as written, compared to the common unwritten renditions of singing “maledizione” on straight quarters leading up to the final Bb. It still works…. But I feel that it portrays a bit of uncertainty and/or weakness as compared to the written intentions of the composer.

Very good, if not in the Caballe, Tebaldi, Price League. I like Muti’s tempo - Pace Pace should not be a lullaby; it is a cry of desperation.
